V Belt replacement on a Craftsman self propelled

I replaced the v-belt on my Craftsman self propelled walk behind (917.377651). I have had the mower about 12 years and this is about the 3rd or 4th belt. Now, though, the self propelled feature begins when I start it, and I cannot figure out the problem. Any ideas?
