Shredding away today when one of the flail shafts broke!
Lots of awful noises and a huge shower of sparks.
My first instinct was to "run away, run away". Then I ran back and flipped the clutch to off and choked the motor to stop that.
Closer inspection showed the broken shaft, a melted down flail and a chewed up screen. Also, the loose end of the shaft started banging on the end of the chipper chute. After dismantling, I discovered the split pin was missing. The holes in the spacer where the pin goes were packed solid with green stuff.
A new shaft is ordered.
