Best riding mower for the money?

I have an acre of property. I have a lot of grass. Part of it is a 16 tree orchard so I do have obstacles. The land is flat. During my research it seems reviews on riding mowers are mostly negative. It leaves me wondering if they are even worth buying. I'm not going to spend $3,000 on a mower but I would love to cut down on the time I spend mowing. If I have to buy a higher end mower, I will buy one used. I am mostly interested in tractor style mowers. I don't want the zero turn type. I do want the option to bag my grass. It would be great if I could mount a snow plow but not absolutely necessary. What brand and model do you recommend?

I nedd iformation on Briggs Vanguard 18 hp engine

I have I 18 hp Vanguard engine. I need to know what the compression should be. I have checked the compression and I show 135 on the left side facing the flywheel and 120 on the right. I have to replace the dip stick tube seal every once in a while and was wanting to know if this could cause this. Could it be building up pressure in the lower end. The engine is also running rough and I am getting oil in the breather. Could this be caused by the breather assembly.

Husqvarna 455 rancher idles find but boggy high end

Hi guys I have a Husqvarna 455 rancher it starts up within two pulls and idles great when you grab the throttle its boggy and won't rev up it doesn't die but won't rev every once in awhile if I feather it a lot I can get it to rev up but it's VERY finicky and every once in awhile it will back fire here's what I've done to the saw so far I've replaced the piston rings and cylinder I've put a brand new carb on it and a brand new ignition coil I put a brand new fuel line on it along with a fuel filter I have also taken the spark arrestor out with no luck I've tried every thing seems like the saw is sucking to much air it has a brand new oem carburetor on it I out new piston cylinder and ring on it because it didn't have compression after observing the ring the saw looked like it had been running Lean for awhile I can't figure this thing out I've replaced all crushal parts what could I be missing?

Hi,

I can't seem to figure out how to correct the speed at which the self propel is operating in correlation with the speed lever setting. It doesn't seem to matter if the lever is on slow or medium, the speed remains the same(fast). I've adjusted the cable for the speed lever but nothing has changed. Any answers?

Mower has 23hp Kawasaki, just over year old. When engine is cold at startup, get large puff of smoke. It does not do it when engine is warm.

I have A 18 hp Vanguard engine on a 616 Grasshopper mower that I would know what the compression should be. I have checked the compression and have found that on the left side facing the flywheel I have 135 lbs. on the right I have 120 lbs. Won't start

Well, I turf tiger started right up today then after mowing for about 20 minutes i parked it. I got on it to start it up after about an hour and when I turned the key nothing happened. And yes, brake was, seat was down and I was sitting on it, control levers were out and deck was up. Any ideas. This happened about weeks ago. I have some ideas but would like to get some from you guys.

Briggs powered Generator

Hello,
I just purchased a Homelite 4400 power generator that is powered by an 8 hp Briggs. As you can imagine, it has not been run much and therefore the carburetor had varnish buildup in it which required a carb rebuild. I disassembled it and soaked the body in naptha solvent for several hours, cleaned out all the ports and jets and removed the steel plug and small freeze plug-type cap(welch plug?). The engine now runs perfectly and even starts with less than a full pull of the rope.
Now to my problem: When I put an electrical load on the generator the governor doesn't pick up the load. The rpms fall and that allows the voltage and hertz to drop. I can manipulate the throttle linkage to hold the load, but in a situation where I'm using this generator for backup power, I can't stand there and hold the throttle. Not that I would.
I think the a previous owner/small engine wrench has made adjustments or bent slightly the screw stop and the spring hook tab.
Can someone please help me or refer me to help for this.

OK here is a good one. My new to me 1999 F925 with yanmar disel has been draining the battery very slowly. I finally found the problem. When the mower is off, one of the indicator panel lights glows very dim. I can only see this in the dark. If I remove the light that is on it just moves to the next one. Any ideas anyone?

Just replaced both valves in a brigg 135292-1158-E1, lapped them in, adjusted intake to .006 and exhaust to .010. New head gasket properly torqued, carb and tank cleaned with new carb kit. Engine started right up but pops/backfires through exhaust. Could it be a bad valve or setting or anyone with any idea's? Thanks Bud

Briggs 126T02-0301-B1 - Need to reconnect autochoke under shroud

Newbie first post.

I recently acquired a neglected 126T02-0301-B1 (09084456) with bad varnish in the carb. I removed the carburetor and did an ultrasound clean.

On reassembly I notice that the autochoke mechanism is not connected properly "inside" the engine (under the silver shroud).
It is properly connected on the carb but the other end of the linkage is just flopping around under the shroud.
I believe this is designed to open the choke to allow more air into the carb once the engine is spinning.

Before I start randomly removing parts, can anyone please list the minimum teardown steps needed to get under that shroud to reconnect whatever it is that is disconnected/loose or broken in there.

Also, does anyone have any photos or videos showing what to expect under the shroud in a properly adjusted engine so that I can compare the pictures against whatever I find.

Kohler CV18 61514 blows oil out breather.

I have a CV18 with the following symptoms:

Sporadic puffs of blue smoke out of exhaust.
Cylinder 1 shows sings of burning oil (plug oily).
Line from crankcase to pulse fuel pump gets cloged with oil. Pump stops working. empty line, reconnect and pump works fine until the line gets clogged again.
Pulled heads and noticed that breather reeds are broken (what are these things?).
Cylinders walls look good. Still shows signs on original boring hash marks. Rings look in good shape. Ring gap orientation not position correctly. Oil rings are correct.
Slight scoring of cylinder 1 connecting rod to crankshaft bearing in line with crankshaft lube hole.
No signs of burned valves.
Valve seals look good.

This engine will burn/blow thru all its oil in about 2 hours (low oil cut out kicks in).

Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi, first time on forum, has anyone seen push rods on OHV engines hitting the guides and banging up the sides of the push rods just below the rockers.
this is on a 11.5 hp snow king.
Any clue why they would do this, was prepared to find a con rod problem based on the noise this was making, not sure that there is not still one lurking below but was hoping it was something simple.

F932 Hydraulic leak...mystery line. Help!

My F932 has been such a great machine. I got it free 3 years ago, and I have had really great luck with it. Runs like a top and it works great. I decided not to use the 72" mower deck as it is a bit too big for my yard. But as a dedicated snow blowing beast it can't be beat. Until this week. I noticed that I was losing hydraulic fluid all over my driveway. Not just a drop or two, but a trail. Looked like the Cat in the Hat.
I peeked under the tractor and noticed fluid all over the left (door side) lift cylinder. Sure looked obvious, so I got a used one from ebay and installed it last night. The repair went great. Except that wasn't where the leak was coming from. Turns out there is a hard hydraulic line right above and slightly behind the lift cylinder. It goes left-right across the tractor, just in front of the axle, up under the body, with a union in the middle. The line, as I said, crosses just above and behind the lift cylinder, makes a 90 degree turn, and then goes into the hollow of the box frame section and disappears. It looks like there is a rubber grommet up in the frame channel, but the line disappears. I spent an hour at the local JD dealer, and they can't help me. We went through all of there books and schematics and can't really find anything. It looks like the line is leaking right at the 90, and I am guessing it rubbed a hole over the years.
Anyone know what I am trying to describe? Where does the line go? How do I remove/replace it?

Whats a Kohler k181 8hp motor w/electric start worth?

I have several K181 motors that all have been gone thru and serviced and run excellent. They came off of traffic signal boards and are still hooked up to a alterantor off of the pulley to run the electrical to the traffic signal boards. What is a fair price for a used rebuilt K181 motor which will sell with the alternator setup that it originally was setup for.

Tried posting pictures and cannot seem to make that happen help please.

When is it too wet to mow?

Thought you might get a kick out of my first real mowing with my new Raptor SD. The photo below is actually in my neighbor's yard. :shocked: Learning to steer this thing when the ground in sloppy is a real challenge. So challenging I thought I would try a second pass. First pass are the tracks on the left. Second second set of tracks is too the right. My property line is just to the left side of the trees running down the right side of the photo. Yep, still too spongy. :rolleyes:

The good news is that technically I did not get stuck. My neighbor indicated we would have had to pull his Scag out with a ATV or similar. Hopefully it will start to dry soon but more rain is coming tomorrow. Rats

Which mower should I keep?

I have two push mowers and need to get rid of one (don't have a use for more that one). Both are in about the same condition as far as the deck, handle, wheels. Both have very little use and the same amount of use (2 seasons). So, it really boils down to the engine. Both have Briggs engines. I've done a lot of searching but can't determine which engine might be more durable.

Mower 1: 1996 Murray 22" with the 4.5 HP Quantum XTE engine, model number: 127802

Mower 2: 2008 MTD 21" with 158 cc 5.5 ft lbs torque, model number: 10T802

Which do you think has the better engine? Parts cost one vs the other?

John Deere Z425 Remove Electric Clutch

Hi everyone, I'm new to the group. I'm working on a friends mower and I have run into a problem. I'm replacing the bracket that goes to both, R & L transmissions. It broke causing the wheels to angle in. I also have to replace the plate the engine bolts to, it broke where the transmission is mounted to it. I'm trying to remove the electric clutch and the bolt is frozen in place. Is the bolt that holds the electric clutch on, reverse thread? Also what size is the washer you put the wrench on to keep the crank from turning? I'm gonna have to buy a wrench to get it off. Thank you in advance for any help.

Today I went out to plow out from the about two feet of snow to find my Ventrac 4500K with yet another problem. Although it started and will move forward and backwards it will not steer and the snow blade will not operate. The Ventrac has 167 hours on it. I checked the hydraulic fluid level to make sure it was OK and then called dealer. My dealer says it is my fault because I didn’t read the service manual as the machine needs hydraulic service after fifty hours and that is why it won’t work. I rechecked my manual which says to change filter after one thousand hours not 50 hours. This is just another in a long list of problems I have had with this overpriced machine. Right from the beginning the machine backfires when you turn off the key and I have been given several conflicting instructions on how to make it stop doing this. Also the speedometer has never worked. I had only a few hours on the tractor when the fuel pump quit working and was replaced with a makeshift electric fuel pump. I could go on about other problems concerning broken bolts and belts but I’m told that those are just “minor things” and I will love this machine. It is true that I do like the tractor when it is working but it is not reliable and you cannot depend on it. Buyers beware.

DEK 11 rebuild (Honda gx340 clone, I think)

Good morning all,
I've been working on bringing a DEK 11hp 270cc engine back to life and have hit a snag. I've been using replacement parts that are for a Honda gx340 clone so far. Carb, gaskets, springs, fuel line for gx340 fit perfectly.
I tried to start the thing a couple days ago and had 0 compression. I found that the piston rings had seized to the piston head so I removed and broke them in the process. I ordered new rings for a Honda gx340 and when they arrived they appear to be way too small. So now I'm confused. Does anyone know if the DEK 11hp is a Honda gx340 clone? Does the Honda gx340 series have different sizes of piston rings/bore diameters?

Yearly Maintenance Questions

I am doing yearly maintenance on my husqvarna m-zt 52. This is for home use where I am cutting about 3 acres. Currently it has about 25 hours on it and the only thing I've done is replace the blades and change the oil. I am pretty much following the book but had some questions as information on the chart isn't matching what they list in service journal.

Here's what I've put together for yearly. Is this correct or am I missing anything?

Replace oil
Replace oil filter
Replace air filter
sharpen / replace blades
Tire Pressure

Now the items below I am not sure about. These were also listed at "at least once a year"
Change fuel filter
Change hydro oil / filter (500 hr)

320 operating hours

My John Deere 320 (i believe it's a 1994 model) has approx 975 hours. the mower is original other than the belts, blades, and filters. How many hours does the Kawasaki engine usually run before giving problems? I realize the main factor is the way the operator runs the unit. I'm asking as a general rule of thumb if the mower has been taken care of and serviced properly.

Toro Snowblower only starts when primed

I have a 2009 Toro PowerMax 1028 Snow blower that has been barely used. I bought it in September and now I'm having trouble with starting it. There was gas left in the tank over the past few months. Earlier today I had it started up, but the engine was revving (surging) up and down, and would only run on full throttle. I took the carburetor apart and clean out the parts. The parts looked pretty clean (a little green film was around the bowl). I clean that out and the rest of the parts with carb cleaner. But did not find much debris or gunk. So I put it back together and put it back in the blower. And now it only starts when I prime it, and as soon as I take the choke off it dies. Do I just need to go buy a new carberator? Or do I have other options that I'm missing?

It's been cold here lately In the single digit's. Started It up today and It cranked slow but did start.Had the headlights on while cranking. While cranking It pulled the gauge down to 8. this tractor, is approx. 1975 mtd model#995 16 cyl. twin briggs, hydrostatic transmission. the transmission seems to be slipping in either forward or reverse.the trans. fluid was cle an. I drained and changed fluid and filter. still slipping, no change. I also did a neutral adjustment for the hydrostatic control lever. still nada. If anyone has any ideas or information I would greatly appreciate it. My friends tell me it is probably worn out. I will be in touch with this site on other lawn tractors and mowers. I also have a 1976 MF 14 in great condition, but the Kohler eng. blew a piston. Also a MF 10 with a belt drive hydro. trans. with a delco combination gen. and starter. Good yard tractor, no deck. Also an early 1960 62, Ford steel seat 24 in. cut ride on. Blue and white. Reminds me of mower in Forest Gump movie.A project for another day or sell.

Hustler Raptor Engine

I am looking to buy a zero radius lawnmower. My wife has come across a used Hustler Raptor 48" with 60 hours on it. It has a 19 hp S31Q677 Briggs and Stratton Engine. I am curious about the engine. I do not see anything to indicate that Hustler ever put Briggs and Stratton engines on their mowers and the 48" all seem to have 22-23 HP motors. Should I be concerned about the engine and mower?

Scag SWZT vs Snapper Pro/Ferris SW35

I am currently looking for my first commercial mower ever. I currently have two 21" Toro SR4(s). I would like to save a much money as possible and not spend a lot, but I want to spend enough that I am buying an excellent piece of equipment. I have been looking at pretty much every single company that makes a walk behind that has a dealer near me. I researched zero turns, stand on mowers, and walk behinds. I have settled on a walk behind so don't try to start selling me on a zero turn or something. Right now the front runners are the Scag SWZT and the Snapper Pro SW35. I will lay out some of the pros and the cons between the two mowers. I am open to other brand recommendations.

Scag
Pros:
1. I have and some people I know personally recommend Scag and not just recommend them but also so how well they have run for them. Also, lots of people here on the internet say that Scag is an amazing brand. So as far as I can tell by what other people say I believe that Scag is a quality mower.
2. I know Scags stripe well and that is pretty important to me.
3. Not much more expensive than Snapper Pro as far as I can tell.
Cons:
1. The closest scag dealer is about a 20-30 minute drive one way. I don't have a ton of clients yet so I'm not super concerned with time, but I would prefer to save time so at least I have it do something other than driving a mower to a dealer.
2. Smaller engine so I'm not sure how well it will do considering I want to mulch pretty much 100% of the time and use a sulky.
3. Not the Velocity+ deck.
4. Not sure how well it mulches.

Snapper Pro
Pros:
1. The dealer is super close. My current dealer carries snapper pro and from my house to the dealer is about a five minute 5 drive if that.
2. Has two engines to choose from either Kawi and B&S and the B&S has plenty of horsepower.
3. Cheaper by a bit, but if you factor in how big of an engine it comes with it is much cheaper than other walk behinds with that much power.
Cons:
1. The question of quality. I heard that snapper pro at one point used and might still be using more plastic than competitors. I heard in the 90s or early 2000s that they used plastic pulleys or something. I'm just not sure if they are quality I have always kind of thought of Snapper as cheap.
2. Not sure how well it mulches.
3. Not sure about striping. I've seen pictures that look really good and others that don't.

Mulching capabilities are VERY important considering I would prefer to mulch 100% of the time other than maybe fall clean ups.
I'm planning on getting either a 48" or a 52" with either a 30" or 21" Toro push mower.
One thing that is the same with both models it that there are no scalp rollers on the 36" one in the middle on the 48" and on the 52" it has rollers in the middle and sides. So for the option of more scalp rollers I might go with the 52 inch.
My Toro push mowers have been awesome so I thought I might go with a Toro/Exmark but when I found out that a floating deck hydro drive was going to cost at least $8,000 I started looking at other brands

I feel like I am forgetting some details that I might need to add, but for now just ask if you need any more information to help me pick the right mower.

Mower deck How can I remove slack from deck belt

My elderly neighbor has a Craftsman lawn tractor model # 917.28856 with 24 HP engine and 42" deck. The mower deck belt seems to have too much slack in it and I have been looking at his owner's manual for a solution. the belt is installed correctly and the tension spring is installed correctly on the idler pulley.

This pass Saturday and Sunday ever time I tried to get on this mower forum all I could get was 502 Bad gateway. I even try it on two different computers and got the same thing. Now today its OK. Has anybody else ever had this problem? and if so what happen?

Let me start this off my saying I am fine if it doesn't snow this whole winter. But hearing talk about this first snow still gets me excited to do some snowblowing. This winter has been extremely weird. It was the warmest December on RECORD, and our first snow didn't come until mid-January! They are forecasting a decent sized snowstorm this coming Friday/Saturday, which would be the first "plowable" snow. The snow around mid-January was just a coating on the grass. It will be nice to have some jobs.....I have the biggest list of snow removal customers yet, but it's the slowest year for snow. :laughing:

Hi all, this unit has only been used twice since new. A mate has dropped it over for me to try and crack it. Problem being it won't start, or even give a cough or fire at all. After checking the usual things with a small 4 stroke, such as does it have spark/ fuel / compression etc? which it has all of those things, yet won't even fire once with a squirt of aerostart down the plug hole, and a little on the plug tip. I would have thought that with all of the above, it should at least show some sign of life. Any ideas on this one would be great, as it has me totally done at the moment. The machine still appears new, not a dirt spot on it.

Sears Craftsman 18.5HP Inteck Model #31P777-0348-E1 was running turned off and then it would not restart. Discovered the small valve cap off the exhaust valve came off and was lying in the valve cover. Reinstalled and adjusted the values found TDC and did the ¼ inch turn after TDC of flywheel. Has spark and gas cranks but does not start. Cked the push rods, valve clearance 3x. Unit has spark and the idle relay and float bowl is good/clean. All running good till this.Help!

I have 3 Snapper RIDERS that I mess with in the winter; hobbies? Anyway, I have a Snapper 30" cut 9HP BS engine and I want to fix the real sloppy steering. Also, would like to convert to electric start. The front end appears to need bushings that I have ordered, but the steering wheel is off center, like it has been twisted or even the shaft is twisted??? As there is no pinion gear or other fancy steering gear, just direct to the spindles, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or has ever repaired the problem. ALSO, I have ordered a ring gear, have the starter and solenoid and ingnition switch for the conversion. Has anyone done this lately that could give me sme pointers??

I have used the blower twice now with the same thing happening. It starts blowing the snow fine then slowly the snow turns to slush & the blower just freezes up. I think I figured it out yesterday the the exhaust from the tractor is heating up the back of the blower slowly heating the snow to slush. I remember something about a heat shield but don't see one in the blower manual. Could this be the problem?

Greetings,

Pulled the trigger this morning on a Raptor SD, 54 with the Kaw motor. The dealer is adding the flex forks and engine guard and I should be able to pick it up Monday. I've posted a few time and agonized for about 3 months on what to purchase. I have about 4.5 acres but only mow about .5 acre although that might expand a bit over time. The rest is woods.

I wasn't too stuck on a specific price range and I wanted to purchase something that would last. I considered more expensive Hustlers as well as a Ferris IS700. In the end the weight of the more commercial units was a problem (at least in my mind). The fastrak units were about 200 lbs heavier and the ferris weighted slightly over 1000 lbs.

We get lots of rain here and my yard is wet a good bit of the time. While the property drains it is not perfect and the soil has a lot of clay so it holds water. I've seen my neighbors stuck with heavier units. Granted I can stick this RSD but I think it will rut less and hopefully will float a bit more than heavier units.

This forum has been really helpful in making my choice and I'll keep you posted how things go. :thumbsup:

I recently changed the oil filter on my ride on mower, after replacing the filter and oil I checked for leaks, ran the engine and re-checked, no leaks.
After using the mower the yesterday I noticed a large amount of oil seeping from a nut at the base of the engine to the rear of the oil filter.
There are no leaks from the filter or drain plug, but there is oil on the spark plug. Not sure but the oil seems to start seeping when I engage the blades.

Honda GX340 HELP PLEASE no start....with pics

Honda GX340. Fixing for friend. He said it was running rough...I couldnt get it to start at all, not even for a second with carb cleaner. Check spark...Very strong...new plug even. Removed OHV cover and head and found it like this...Schmoots even in the intake behind where the carb connects.....Cylinder is not scratched from bad rings....Seems good. I did compression test, but keep in mind this engine has the compression release inside for easier starting...Even so I should get a little compression....I am getting 30 psi if i am lucky.....Look at pics please... Any ideas? I have a LA175 with the Briggs and Stratton 26hp engine. I started my mower and ran it for about 2 minutes before it quit on me. Now it will start with the aid of starting fluid. Then it throttles up and immediately throttles down and quits running. Will a safety switch cause this to happen? I have changed the fuel pump and filter and filled with new gas. Same result. Oil is new and level is good. Any ideas?

I turned off the engine, turned the key on but not crank it. I could hear the metallic click coming from the rear. I restarted the engine but the PTO still would not engage. But after trying a few times when I pulled up the switch to engage the PTO and the engine died. I do not know if this is related or not. I tried to restart the engine but it will not crank. the starter will spin but the engine will not fire. Usually if it is a safety issue the starter will not spin. Say if the PTO switch was pulled up the starter will not spin.
So do I have two unrelated problems or are they related and if so Please tell me what to look for?

Engine doesn't turn off when switched to off

I have a Yard Machine by MTD that will not turn off when I remove the key. I tested the ground wire and the wire that goes to the ignition coil for continuity and they all pass. I have also checked that continuity exists when the key is turned to the off position between the ignition coil and the frame and engine block and there is.

It is my understanding when the ignition wire it grounded it prevents the spark from generating thus killing the engine but it does not seem to be the case with mine. I have taken another jumper wire and connected one end to the ignition coil and the other to ground on the lawnmower with no effect. When the lawn mower is in the run position continuity does not exist between the ignition coil and ground.

I have purchased a new ignition switch but that changed nothing.

Any ideas???

Ok I had read in the manual that it is best to store your mower during off season on jacks and off the tires. #1: Does anyone do this? #2: Where do you place the jacks under the mower?

I started my Fastrak 54 and ran it for about 15mins at idle. Next, I engaged the blades for a bit of spin time. Its a bit strange but I swear that the tires had a hollow spot from sitting in my shop. Granted, I have not checked the pressure in the tires but will square that away soon. It got me thinking about the storage information in the manual. So, aside from the normal oil changing and blowing off grass for storage does anyone store their machine off the tires and on jacks?

I think I narrowed down my tractor choice

I think I've narrowed down my choice of tractors to two models. The first is a Craftsman Pro Series 24 HP V-Twin Kohler Elite 46" Turn Tight Extreme Riding Mower and the second is a John Deere D140 48 in. 22 HP V-Twin Hydrostatic Front-Engine Riding Mower. Who makes the engine in the JD? Anyone with some knowledge on these two machines please give me your opinion, good and bad. Also if there is another model that you feel is better please advise. I was researching the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Series LT 46 in. 22 HP V-Twin Kohler Hydrostatic Gas Front-Engine Riding Mower as well. I have a little over an acre, some hills and moderate obstacles (trees). Plan on aerating, thatching, mulching and bagging.
I would have added a link to all three machines but I have no idea how to pull that off.

Had just got done rebuilding a HS50 Tecumseh on a wood splitter. It started right up and ran perfect. The only thing was it would only run for about 5 min's and the engine would quit running. One pull with the rope and it would be running again with the same problem over again. I was thinking a fuel problem but everything was new. So being desperate I just ran a bypass fuel line right to the carburetor and problem solved. The only thing that I added to the fuel line was a new shut off valve. The shut off valve was made in China and for some reason the fuel would stop flowing through the valve after I would run the engine for a short time. Who would think you could have a problem with a simple fuel shut off valve. Just more Chinese junk to watch out for.

Changing Hydraulic oil in Hustler Raptor SD 54

Hi, I am new to this forum and have a question that I hope one of you can answer. I have been doing maintenance and changing fluids on my Hustler so its ready when Spring rolls around. Today I was changing the oil in the hydraulic system and after draining it out putting new filters on I went to add the fresh fluid through the holding tank under the seat. I did this and filled it up a little past the cold level mark and noticed that it did not seem to be draining down into the transmissions, I then put the cap back on and cranked the mower thinking that might suck the fluid down, but it still remained at the same level. I then with the wheels off and the rear end jacked up pushed both bars forward and could see both hubs spinning, but still the fluid level had not moved as far as I could tell. I then took one of the filters off to check and see if the oil had made it that far and very little had. So my question is what is the procedure for refilling hydraulic oil in a Hustler Raptor SD? Hi, new to the forum. Just picked up a used Cub Cadet 11A-MC056 959-468 in non running condition. It had a broken handle and hard to pull pull string. I believe the engine model number is 1p70FUA.

So far i have replaced the broken handle, replaced the fly wheel key (even though the original looked fine), adjusted the valves (intake at .006 and exhaust at .008). I think i did this correctly (Put my finger over the spark plug hole and rotated the engine until compression stroke, placed a plastic straw in the spark plug hole and continued to turn until the highest point to find TDC). The edge of the head makes this engine difficult to get a feeler gauge in.

I can get the mower started and it runs fine, but occasionally the string still yanks back very hard (feels like it's going to break some fingers!)

Any suggestions on what to do next? The blade does not have any chips or dents in it to indicate that the PO hit something. Should i remove the blade and inspect the adapter keyway? Or would this even make a difference? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Need help and advice on an old grasshopper 2132 mower. It was left rotting for a few years outside after wiring problems. Besides massive amounts of rust now and what ever that will entail, its original problem was wiring. Can I get any advice or help on this? I know grasshoppers are tanks but is it worth it? I was hoping I could just buy a new wiring harness but I can't find one. Do I have to fix it wire by wire? Help please.

Engine B&S 190CC sputters but won't start

I have a 2010 Troy-Bilt with a 190cc, 6.75HP Briggs - electric start. This is an auto choke model without a priming bulb. It was hard starting last season and finally decided to not start at all, by starter or by pull. I tore it down this past month. Valves are good. Some cylinder scoring. Key is intact. New head gasket. Carb cleaned and rebuilt. Engine has good compression, spark and is getting fuel. Full tank, tried to get it to fire with starting fluid. Sputtered and spit fuel from intake side of carb but also some smoke from exhaust. It seems like it wants to start but will not catch. What else do I need to look for? TIA.

I have a TV... (motor with plastic carb). it wont stay running. prime and it starts. I took off the carb and cleaned everything out so that is is spotless. This is the second one that i came across that acted this way. The first one I tried rebuilding with same results so i dont want to buy and get the same result with this one.

Long term storage (without gasoline)

I have a couple of generators I would like to "store" indefinitely without gasoline. I hope I don't have to use them. Once a year I start them, drain the fuel and replace it with new fuel.

I'd like to know if there is a better method. I know if I let them run dry, the float and inside of the fuel tanks could rust and the inside of the carb corrode. I was wondering if I ran them dry, disconnected the fuel hose and removed the fuel cap and let the gas evaporate pver a couple of hot summers day, then sprayed this Sta-Bil fogging oil into the fuel inlet port of the carb and inside the gas tank if that would prevent any corrosion from building up.

BR540 blower peters out after a few minutes running

My br540 blower was running fine yesterday. I refueled it with fresh gas today and after about 20 minutes it started to slow down and I had to feather the throttle to keep it running but it eventually quit. I checked and everything seemed fine so I tried again and after a few minutes it slowed down and eventually quit. Started again and when failing I pumped the bulb which caused it to immediately stop running. Changed the fuel filter, checked and cleaned spark plug and air filter, all OK. Restarted the blower and it ran for a few minutes at full power then
slowed/bogged down and quit. After some research here I will check the spark arrestor tomorrow but welcome any other advice.

I was mowing and the motion drivebelt broke. I just replaced the belt thinking i'm gonna be good to go but no. it will not move. I can see the belt moving fine and when I lift up the rear end the tires are moving forward. the manual says to adjust the clutch which I just did (no help) and then the brake rod which I have not done yet, don't think that will help anything. any ideas? is my tranny toast? this is my first riding mower and I have 1+ acre yard.

After finishing a fall clean up I drove my tiger cub into the trailer and off to the next job. Upon arrival the starter would turn the engine slowly a couple revolutions and the solenoid clicked. After changing the battery and solenoid. Removing the starter and bench testing and removing the clutch...I found it will turn over and start every time with the hydro belt off. I turned all four pulleys (2 hydro, tension and guide pulley) both directions with zero resistance or indication of a bad bearings.

Any thoughts ? I'm stuck.

I'm thinking the starter might be weak? Not sure how to test a weak starter? The bendix flies out on the bench and installed starts the engine with the hydro belt off.

How to fix your "hard to start" K series kohler

I'm putting this information out because I found out how to fix my Kohler K341. First od all I have an old Ford LGT 165 mower that would not start. The motor would not start due to the compression release tab on the crank was bent down and not allowing the engine to release compression during starting. Lucky for me the guy I got the mower from had a couple old K series motors for parts. I found a cam shaft ARC (automatic compression release), that was in better shape than the one in my engine. Kohler says the exhaust valve should lift 0.031" to 0.041", but if your tab is bent down the valve will not lift. I swapped out the camshaft and what do you know, the motor cranked and started.
Now if you don't have a spare camshaft like I did and have this problem, I have another idea for you. Take out the cam shaft and have a small bead welded to the ARC tab. Then you will need to remove metal until you get the correct height on the tab. Just use a caliper and measure until the tab is around the 0.030" to 0.040" above the camshaft.
Don't try to bent the tab up because most of these are hardened and will break. You can get the service manual and look it up to see if your motor has the hardened ARC tab or not.

I'm trying to get 4.10 tubeless tires to inflate on my snow blower. I had the same problem with my rider mower this summer. The smaller the tire the harder to "bead"? I've tried belts, rope, wraped around the tire, nothing seems to work. I finally gave up and had my neighbor take them to work,(where I bought the rider) I'll probably do the same this time, but I like the independence of doing it myself. I have everything to take tires off and put on, I just can't figure out how to get the tires to inflate.

WE have replaced the needle and the brass seat twice and the float is new as well. When we turn the gas valve on , gas almost immediately shoots out the center of the carb. I have decided to purchase a new Honda HRR self-propelled mower. My yard is not very large, takes alittle over 1 hr to mow and bag. At first thought I was looking a the Electric Start rather than the Roto Stop version of the Honda HRR216VKA. Now I'm leaning toward the Roto Stop.

Of the two which would you choose and why?

Question for all. My son and I are trying to fix the carb on his mower. It's an MTD with 14.5 Briggs with a Walbro LMT carb. WE have replaced the needle and the brass seat twice and the float is new as well. When we turn the gas valve on , gas almost immediately shoots out the center of the carb. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Remove axle on Honda HT-R3009?

I'm trying to restore an old HT-R3009 mower. I was able to get it running again, but now I'm looking at the reason it was given to me for free. It just stopped going. I jacked up the back end and found that the rear right wheel spins freely. When I took off the wheel, I noticed that the grooves that usually make the wheel turn with the axle were worn down so much that he wheel would spin without the axle moving.

I see that there are connections on each side that look like I can disconnect to replace the ends of the axle. However, I'm not sure how to get them to turn. They seem to be rusted pretty good. I'll attach some pictures to show what I'm referring to on the axle. Also, the left rear tire is stuck on the axle. I've tried Liquid Wrench and light tapping on the back side of the wheel, but no luck. I don't want to damage the transmission by beating too hard on the wheel while it is still attached through the transmission. If I can get the axle to separate on that left side, it would probably be easier to get the stuck wheel off (the tire is dry rotted).

Any advice on how to get the axle apart or the left wheel off would be greatly appreciated!

Repairs Woods 6250 (GH 721) gas Left Wheel Locked Up.

Hey guys, needing some advice. Just picked up a Woods 6250 which is identical to the 721 gas. Its an older unit, It has the Gemini 771 hydros. My issue is the left drive wheel is bound tight. When I was first diagnosing it would spin fwd. an rev. a little bit and bind, but very quickly got to where it wont go either way....none at all. The Bypasses are off the right is strong, belts good. I cant even move the wheel if I release the bypass....its jammed tight. Was doing some looking around an someone had mentioned that the primarys in the final drive could be the cause. Does anyone have any input? Could the park brake be jammed? Tractor runs good just the wheel is jammed. Bought to fix an sell but im seeing here that these Gemini parts are like searching for gold. so Im wondering if its worth trying to fix or just part it out. Thanks guys.

Fuel tank removal on Craftsman lawn tractor

Greetings: I need to remove a fuel tank from a Craftsman lawn tractor (917.275023) - 23HP Kohler engine, hydro drive; can anybody give me some advise or point me in the right direction on how to remove this fuel tank? it is mounted under the seat and doesn't look easy .... I've looked on YouTube but haven't found much in the way of instructional video..... thanks for the replies.....

Exhaust valve question for Briggs Intek 20hp

I just did a rebuild on an Intek MOD: 331777 2372 G5, CODE: 110502ZD. The retailer that sold me the camshaft sent me the wrong part, but it looked very close with the exception that I had to cut out a slot for the pump stem. Anyway, I get it all put back together and there is too much compression, like the ACR is broken. I can set the valve lash to release enough pressure to start and run the machine. Do so allows it to run nice, full throttle, idle, no backfiring etc. But I'm just wondering what the negative effects might be in leaving the lash set hard like that on the exhaust side? It's been a long day, and I'm a little tired, so forgive the question if it's dumb. I am planning on tearing the engine back down and putting in the correct cam. Just looking for some of the experts to chime in on the ill mechanical effects doing this. Thank you all!

Strange Engine Issue - Wont Start put chord will pull

Hello friends, been searching the forum for awhile and can't seem to find this one. My mower died in mid-mow this morning. I wear sound proof headphones to protect my ears but I thought I heard a faint clicking sound just a few seconds before and almost like a line or rope was cut inside and then then the mower died.

I have checked the gas, oil, filter and spark plug and all looks well. But when I try to start it, the flywheel seems to move and make kind of an old fire engine siren sound and nothing happens. I am attaching a video and picture. If anyone can give me some direction here that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Engine My DGT 6000 Craftsman rider

Hello out there in mower land , Hitman here ,I have the DGT 6000 mower with a Kohler 27 HP engine ! When I went to sears I told the salesmen I wanted the largest engine , the largest deck ! What I left with was a DGT 6000 w/ 27 HP , and a 54 inch deck . It was not what I was expecting the power was not there , after a little while it started smoking from one cylinder , I suspect a ring problem , does anyone agree with me on this diagnostic ! Since then I have been nursing it along these past years , I also did a lot of research On rebuilding the kohler for around a $100 with a kit from Sears . I also did research on engine replacement ,what I came with is to do both ! I went to Northern and purchased a Honda 660 cc commercial engine which I will swap out this spring . I will then rebuild the Kohler and install it in a older Craftsmen I have !. I look forward to chatting with you all should I have any problems or questions I might need help with !
