Little Red Homelite

Back in the middle of the nineties I purchased a little lawn mower: Homelite manual push mulching mower. It was advertised in the Family Handyman magazine, and I fall I love for this beautiful piece US made engineering marvel. At that time I was living, with my wife and three kids, in the south shore of Montreal, QC. More precisely in St-Hubert. But I was lucky that just few miles south there was a Homelite dealer, Maison Ethier. I drove there with my family and found exactly the same red Homelite model that was pictured in the Family Handyman magazine. There was the choice of push or self propelled model, but I decided to purchase the cheaper one, the push model. I loved this machine because it did not have any opening on the deck. I remember that the machine was still inside the box, which it was hard to fit on my car trunk.
I used this machine for few years. I remember that I used to clean it after every use, and I also oiled all unpainted steel surfaces. Unfortunately one day I hit a rock and damaged the blade (not sure if I also damaged the shaft).
Instead of repairing my little Homelite I decided to purchased a new lawn mower. This item I decided to purchase the John Deere 14SB (the push model), also with aluminum deck as the Homelite. This new mower was top pick in the Consumer Reports of that year. I still have this lawn mower on my basement, but I have not use it since we moved to the US in 2001, since my back yard is too small for such big lawn mower.
When we moved to the USA I also brought with me the little red Homelite which I have repaired few years after purchasing the John Deere mower. In 2003 we moved to a new house and have good friend family helping us to move. This is a beautiful family and they were very helpful in our move. I'm still very grateful to them for their help. During the move they noted that I have two lawn mowers, and they remarked to my how cute it was my little Homelite, and how neat it was with its bright red paint. So as sign of gratitude I give them the Homelite lawn mower. They were very happy with the mower and used it for a while. Some days I used to drive by their house and I was a bit dissapointed seeing my old little Homelite outside, seating close to the house, without any protection against the rain. That little lawn mower has never seen before any drop of rain, and it was very sad for me to see it now so lonely seating outside. One day, driving by our friends house, I did not see the little red mower anymore. I asked to our friends politely about the littel red lawn mower and they told me that the gas tank cracked and they decided to discard the machine and purchase a new one.
During all these years I was still remembering the red Homelite. Several years ago Homelite was purchased by John Deere, and these sturdy lawn mowers were not longer produced. So last year I decided to find a similar used Homelite lawn mower. Checking Craiglist I found one very similar to my old one, but the seller changed his mind after seeing my interest for the machine. This year I loocked again and last Sunday I purchased a used self propelled Homelite (red, 20" aluminum deck). The machine starts and seems to run well. The bottom handle is broken, and it will need a good cleaning. The picture attached is from the Craig List listing. The mower still on my truck, because we have had too much rain these days and I don't want to keep it outside exposed to the rain.
I intend to fix this lawn mower and we will use it on my little back yard and sidewalk grass. I will try to post better photos as soon I get it out of my truck.
