Repairs Frustrating starting issue with Cub Cadet LT1045 Rider

So...multiple frustrating turns at every road here with trying to get this rider started! I bought a new battery and that didn't help. Changed the starter. No go. Changed the solenoid. No go. Bypassed the solenoid (had the seat safety switch engaged) and nothing. That's what has me confused--I thought bypassing the solenoid & going straight to the starter would get it going. All it does it click.

I must add that this issue occurred when I loaned my mower to a neighbor. We caught them pushing the mower as they couldn't get it restarted after running out of gas. They had the blade engaged & did not put the mower in neutral. It had 2 men behind it pushing it until we spotted them & stopped them.

So I'm leaning towards something wrong with the PTO or clutch as this action could have done something to it?

I'm at a standstill. I may try jumping it with a car battery tomorrow to give it more amperage?

HELP!!??!!?? What next?

Thanks

New Guy

I'm retired and live in Murfreesboro, TN, about 30 miles southeast of Nashville. I'm interested in learning more about 2 and 4 cycle engines. Homeowner with about 3/4ths of an acre. My current mowers are a 21" Cub Cadet S621 (quit starting about a week ago) and a John Deere GX85 rear engine riding mower. Both are about 12-15 years old and I may be in the market next year. Hope to learn alot.

Recoil starter spring

What is the best way to lube the spring on a 2 hp 3 hp briggs?

I have the spring clean, but not the housing. I will clean it and

install the spring and rope. I believe these take about 6 turns.

I heard somewhere that auto-trans fluid worked ok.

Should it be a spray type lube or just some oil?

Thanks.

Weedwacker not starting

I have a weedwacker (2 cycle), not sure what brand, it was working fine for the two years I had it, then all of a sudden it stops working right.

Could it be the gas? I have a tank that still holds gas from a year ago, mix it with oil and put it in the machine.

Anyways, the weedwacker starts by setting the pin to "1" but then dies.

Set it to "2" then it dies after running for 5 seconds.

Set it to "3" then it still dies after running for 5 seconds.

I can do this as many times as I want, it runs but then it seems like its not getting enough gas.

I took the carburetor apart, nothing was wrong with, still had the problem except if I move the pin slightly between "1" and "2" and hold the gas down and never let go, it runs. I have no clue what is wrong with it.

Sharpening blades with a dremel works great!

Just wanted to share with everyone on the forum that I discovered a great way to get an incredibly smooth edge on my lawn mower blades. I usually sharpen them with my bench grinder but it has a tendency to gouge the blade and it's difficult to sharpen mulching blades because of the curves. So I got my trusty old dremel out today to see if it could do any better. It takes a little longer with a dremel but it sure makes a super fine edge! Also it didn't heat up the metal while it was grinding. I can't wait till spring to see how the blade does. Let me know what y'all think about this technique.

J Deere 318 Starting to use oil

Hello - I am new to the forum. I have a 1987 John Deere 318 that is using a bit of oil. I would like to find a capable mechanic in my area "Charleston, SC" who could rebuild my engine. The J. Simplicity Push Mower similar to Lawn-Boy mowers????

While I am slightly obsessed with Lawn-Boy mowers, a few of my friends have the same admiration for old Simplicity garden tractors. One of them ended up with his grandfather's old push mower. Just so happens it is a Simplicity model 1221. I looked at it and the first thing that came to my mind was, "That's a Lawn-Boy". I have searched high and low for information regarding these push mowers and their similarity to Lawn-Boy mowers and have come up with almost nothing. In fact, there is almost no information on them at all. It seems even from the Simplicity end that all I could find was that they were made along with a Homelite and Allis variant. I have found some IPL'S and owner's manuals but not much else.

I did find a youtube video of a fella running a late 60's version and in the comments someone made a statement indicating the Lawn-Boy sued Simplicity for the production of these mowers. I have not been able to verify that. If anyone can offer any insight it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Engine Did I Break Camshaft Gear or Lobe on Camshaft? HELP!

I am new to the Forum and have a very general 4 stroke engine question. I left 10% ethanol gas with fuel additive in my Troybilt Generator (Briggs and Stratton Engine 6.5 HP) way too long and the residue completely froze my fuel intake valve stem. I pulled on the starter cord several times and it was a lot harder to pull than I remembered from the past. I did remove the OHV cover and detect that the intake valve was frozen and not moving any, just the exhaust valve, when I pulled a few more times on the cord. The rocker arm and everything was just stationary on the intake side. Then I used some carburetor cleaner, penetrating oil to loosen the valve stem and it began operating up and down again when I pulled the cord. It appears that on the compression stroke that both valves are open part of the time and I think the timing of the valves opening has been totally altered. Is it possible that I broke one or some of those little plastic/nylon cogs that are part of the camshaft assembly for the intake valve? I think the intake valve was frozen closed and the rocker arm was frozen when it received the push from the steel rod to open the intake valve (compress the spring). It does look to me like something had to give when that rod could not push the rocker to compress the spring. Like I said, the question is very general and most any 4 cycle engine mechanic can tell me yes or no. Thanks for your input.

valve adjustment for honda hrx 217

I am unable to source a service manual for my mower. I would simply like to know the valve clearances for the GCV 190 (2008) engine so that I can set the valves myself. The serial number for the mower is MAGA-1526669. The motor is becoming slightly harder to start and the valve adjustment service interval is coming up or just passed. The other thing that is due is to "grease the pinion gears". I see no direction regarding this in the owner's manual and would appreciate some feedback about this as well. Thanks in advance.

scag tiger cub blows 20 amp fuse in start position

my tiger cub had a delay in the start position for a while but eventually started and runs fine. Blowing leaves the other day she stalled (overload) and now she keeps blowing fuses in the S position. ran out of fuses but was able to jump the 20 amp. fuse she started ran like she suppose to loaded the machine onto the trailer and brought her home. Checked all safety switches and wiring looks they are good. I noticed on page 64 collar schematic they show 2 diodes one on a relay and the other one between the ground and the green wire from the engine adapter. I wonder if one of them went bad. Hopefully someone can help?

Vintage Tecumseh AH 817 MB spark problem

Hi, I am new here and am hoping someone can help me with my old engine. I have a Tecumseh AH 817 MB 2 cycle engine. Currently it has a very weak spark, not enough to spark the plug, but I can feel it when I spin the flywheel and touch the plug wire. I have replaced the condenser, and that made no difference, I also cleaned the magnets, and checked the gap between the coil and flywheel, and replaced the points. I am wondering if the coil is bad. I have been told this is a difficult engine to find parts for, but would love to hear from someone who may have one for sale or would know what parts would cross reference to fit this engine. Thanks for your help, I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

JD D110 After carb reasemble no gas to plug. HELP!!!

Ok any help would be appreciated. After trouble shooting every area for a engine that ran uneven I finally decided to tear down the carb and clean it. After reassembly it wont start! The plug is dry like its not getting gas. The mower only has 80 hrs on it. Any advise would be appreciated!

Another slope thread. Equipment advice

Howdy.

I have to mow the side walls around a catch basin. Local code requires that it be kept below 1 foot, so I'm either mowing very tall grass, or mowing it often

I measured the steepest part of the slope and came up with a 48% grade (23" rise over a 48" run). That section is just below the fence in the pic, which you can see is a sizeable area. The fence is 6 feet tall, to give you an idea. The other slopes are at least a 23% grade.

So I have to buy a mower. I'm looking at used stuff in the $1500 range, thinking that maybe this time of year I can find a deal for maybe $1000-1200. Cheaper would be better, since I could then buy other stuff I need.

I've seen comments in various threads advising both for and against zero turn mowers, riders, and walk behind mowers on a slope. I suppose each has its advantages and disadvantages. None of what I've read deals with a slope this steep.

So what would you suggest? I also have to mow 2 long parking strips that are just under 6 feet wide, so I'd like to get something with at least a 36" cut so I can do the parking strip in just 2 passes rather than 3. I mention it because I don't know if deck size will make a difference on the slope.

I've considered a rider, but going up and down that slope would kill a transmission pretty quick I'd think. Is there any way to now a slope that steep from side to side? In a perfect world, I'd prefer to just keep driving in circles around the outer slope, mowing down from top to bottom.

Any thoughts appreciated

Help!!!

Hi everyone, this is my first post. This past summer my 2008 z445 with a zawasaki engine threw a connecting rod. While I was disassembling the engine I took lots of pictures, but somehow all of the pictures are missing. So my question is could someone with the same mower please take pictures of their throttle linkage and post them for me?

Kohler Command 25 charging system problem

I have a Kohler Command 25 Model CV25S, and I just tested my stator and voltage regulator.

The problem is that the mower runs fine until I'm I've mowed about half an acre, and then my 20 amp fuse on the charging system blows. If I replace it immediately it will blow again. If I let the engine sit a day it will run again as before until it blows the fuse.

Note that I just replaced my positive battery cable with a brand new one ... the old one was old, weak, and corroded. Even after replacing this, the charging system acted the exact same as before ... 1/2 acre and then a blown fuse.

My test results:

Battery tested after key turned on: approx. 12v DC.

Battery tested while engine running fast: approx. 14.5v DC.

Ohm test on stator AC wire to AC wire: <1ohm

Ohm test on stator AC wires to ground: infinity

Voltage Regulator AC wires coming from the stator tested to ground: approx. 25v AC.

My thought is that the voltage regulator goes funky after it gets warm.

To fully test this I'd probably have to mow until it blows the fuse and then test it again, but if you all have any input on this diagnosis it would be much appreciated, especially if there are any other tests I can run to verify things.

THANKS!

Custom fuel tank, vent question

I just ordered and received two round fuel tanks, 5" round by 10" long. They are going on a homemade trike I've built. The tanks came with non vented caps, a fuel out petcock on one end and a vent opening on the bottom of the tanks on the opposite end. I have the vent tube and fittings. I understand that the vent tube needs to come from the bottom of the tank and rise up above the fuel line on the outside of the tank, where the vent tube will remain uncapped and open. On the inside of the tank, I'm guessing the vent tube wound need to extend up into the tank high enough so that it's always above the fuel line?? If so, what keeps the tube from shifting and possible dropping below the fuel line? Doesn't the vent tube need to remain clear? The vent tube is just a propylene tube.

STIHL Ultra Oil in ECHO,s

H 2113 charging circuit

Battery is not getting charged! I checked the coil, I'm getting 30v from the coil at the engine, I replaced the diode under the seat but I'm still not getting a charge on the battery. 10hp Snow King Adjustment Screw

I just put a rebuild kit in my snowblower. Last season, it was loping up and down while ideling. So I bought a kit this year and it was doing it again. I readjusted mixture screw on the side and once I remove the screw driver off the screw, it spins right back in to seated. Then it starts loping. I back the screw out 1-1/2 turns and it runs smooth, remove the screw driver and spins back in.....This seems odd to me.

Any one with some suggestions?

Valve adjustment tolerence setting

I've got a 24 hp twin. It has about 200hrs on it. Bought it new and never been adjusted. On a tractor. Basic problem is it has a backfire through the muffler. It was hard to start too at times too. I opened the valve covers to check them. I did the set up, TDC and 1/4 past it. On both I could not get a 005 in. The 004 goes in but you have to really push it. According to the book, they should be set at 004-006. My motor is 445667. The rocker arms are tight with the 004. I noticed on videos around even with 004 you get a very slight movement. Should I see a very slight movement? Should I go up to 005?

From Scotts website: Gypsum ineffective on an established lawn unless aerate ???

Myth#4: Always Apply Granular Lime on Your Lawn in the Fall

Lime helps balance the ph level in soil. Unless you find out what your soil's ph level is by a professional soil lab, don't bother. Granular lime is effective when the soil ph is less than 6.0%. It's more effective when you mix it in with the top 5 inches of soil. In an established lawn, you first have to aerate with plugs every 1 to 1.5 inches apart. You may need to put lime in your vegetable garden or flower bed depending on your soil test.

D130 stalls when brake is released

My tractor was running fine until I removed the mower deck and installed the snow blower (not my first time). The mower starts fine but stalls when releasing the brake.

I replaced the seat kill switch, same problem. I replaced the brake kill switch, same problem. Since it stalled when I released the brake i taped the brake kill switch plunger in the "brake on" position. But when I engage the PTO it stalls. I know something simple happen while changed over from mower to snow blower but have no idea what it could be. Any answers out there?

Cylinder Head Torque Specs

Hello,

I have a 1964 Simplicity Bradmoor 707 with a Briggs Engine Model 170702. I'm looking for torque specs for mounting the cylinder head.

Thanks

Blades Hello/Snow blade installation

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it! I didn't see a Scotts specific forum, so I'm guessing either I need to post about it here, or I'm the only one on this forum that's foolish enough to own a Scotts lawn tractor.

I'm working on installing a snow blade on it for the first time this year, and I'm fabricating it all from scratch. I'm planning to use it for my house, my work (I'm responsible for clearing the parking lots and although I've got a snow blower, it still takes upwards of 3-4 hours to do it), my church, and for helping out any friends and family that need it. I've got a trusty ol' 1991 F-150 and ramps to move it with, but soon I need to get a more family-friendly vehicle so I'll be looking for a small trailer to tow it with.

Pictures to come, but here's what I've done and am planning so far:

I cut the steel for the blade out of an old 100 gallon propane tank (about 12 gauge steel) and I'm going to weld 1/8" steel shoes (cut from flat stock) to each corner. This will save having to purchase material for a wear edge, and 1/8" is enough clearance to avoid most changes in surface level. It's also low enough that simply spreading sand and salt will melt what's left.

The mounting bracket is going to be made from 3/8" flat stock and 1/4"x2"x2" angle iron and (more or less) be square in shape. The flat stock is going to mount to the frame just ahead of the engine. The flat stock will extend out far enough on either side for the angle iron to clear the hood, and then a piece of angle iron will stretch across the front of the hood and connect the angle iron on either side. I'll also be reinforcing the frame as necessary. The one thing I haven't decided on is whether or not to weld the angle iron to the flat stock, or to make it bolt on so that it can be removed during the summer.

For blade-to-bracket attachment and adjustment: there will be a set of "ears" on the blade and the bracket made from 1/4" (possibly 5/16") flat stock. The ears on the blade will have one 9/16" hole drilled (to accept a 1/2" solid rod) and the ears on the bracket will have 2 - 9/16" holes drilled in them, one set in front of the other with about a 1/4" of space between them. The basic idea is that the front set of holes will accept the rod and be used for when I want the blade to be straight ahead. If I want the blade to tilt right or left, I can remove the rod from its respective side, then push the blade back far enough to get the rod into the rearmost hole on the ear (that's what she said). I'm opting for solid rod instead of individual pins b/c if, for example, one side of the blade catches and the other doesn't, the rod will help distribute the force of the impact across both mounting points instead of focusing it all on one.

I'm still looking for ideas on a lifting mechanism and a way to keep the blade off the ground for when I'm loading and unloading it. Obviously it will be manual, but I don't want a lever that's bulky and in the way of being able to climb on and off the tractor. I've thought about making a linkage that would reach back under the tractor and mount to the arms that raise and lower the mower deck, but I'm not sure on the details of how that would work.

I've got 2 new tires on the way from an ebay purchase, and I got a great deal on chains from NAPA.

I've heard that it's useful to have a weight bracket on the rear end and obviously I understand why, but I've no idea what it looks like or what to do/how much weight to add.

...I think that's everything. Ideas/suggestions/criticisms? I'm open to any and all words of wisdom.

Thanks for your time.

Scrap yard Lawn Boy find

Last Saturday I while I was at the scrap yard I spotted this 1987 8243AE. It was getting ready to be thrown into their breakage trailer when I asked about it. I ended up buying it for $15. The motor is really hard to turn by hand so I'm gonna remove the spark plug and spray some pb blaster into the cylinder and let it soak for a while. It's also missing the big black ring on top of the shroud and the air filter and cover. I'm pretty excited to see if it will run as I've been wanting to find a cheap self propelled lawn boy for a while. Anyways thanks for looking!

Cub Cadet rzt 22 starting problem

I posted this in the engine repair area and thought it might be better here.

Need some help here. Mower is intermittently not starting. Would click when you turned the key. Turn it again and it may click or turn over. it was the original battery so I replaced it. No difference. Replaced solenoid and now the starter. No change. If you keep turning the key it may click or turn over or just turn a little bit. switches apparently are fine as it is turning over. But it seems to be turning slow. Many times the starter does not retract. It will do this even when crossing the solenoid terminals. When the key is turned to start the voltage will drop to 5 or 6 if it doesn't turn over and 8 or 9 if it does. Voltage is fine at the third wire on the solenoid. Any suggestions?

Should of got one a long time ago. Besides, I thought when I get a new trimmer the new head will go right on it. I highly recommend this head for anyone looking for an replacement head.

Engine Z425 John Deere twin cyl. 22 hp b/s

Thought I had posted earlier, however, the second 22 hp JD briggs stratton engine has throwed craps in a matter of 4 years on a Z425. Is there an engine that will interchange besides the B/S that anyone has tried, like a kohler, kawasaki or anything besides a B/S?

Thanks for any input,

Trans problem

Aloha all, got a 2004 John Deere L130, Kohler Commander 23, Automatic Tuff Torq HD K46. Blades engage and runs okay but when mower reaches a slight upgrade the trans starts to hum and then does not move (as like the belt is slipping but don't think so, no belt burning smell). It does this in forward and reverse. Maybe low on fluid?? How can you check level? Any suggestions??

blade cluth problem

Hi I am new to this forum, but I have a problem with my hustler fastrac mower. If someone could please tell me what I need to do would be greatly a appreciated. THANK YOU, and have a great day. mikeepp

Kawasaki carb kit

Does anyone offer a carb rebuild kit for the Kawasaki FD731V engine? I hate to pay $150 for a used carb when I can buy an entire new engine for $1,000.

Fuel Carburetor Rebuild Kit

I have a Cub Cadet LTX 1042 mower with a Kohler Courage 20 engine (SV-600-3224). Fuel has started leaking out of the carburetor very slowly, but enough to empty the gas tank in a few days. I am assuming I need to rebuild the carburetor but am having problem finding the right rebuild kit. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Super Z Battery Draining/Hard starting

Even in slightly cooler temps (Iowa) my Super Z (926980) is hard starting. Usually starts right up with a jump. I remember a prior post about a starter assist relay kit but I can't find the post or a part number. Other suggestions? Help!

zero turn spins and slides

I run a Toro z master it spins and slides when making turns. I have tried to things to prevent it like wider turns and no zero turns with no luck still tearing up lawns. I've noticed it doesn't seem to have a slow speed when I pull back the levers the wheels seem to lock up. Any suggestions maybe mechanical.

Got started on the 1014 edger today

Now that the 6302 is done, on to the next. Found this at a second hand store in Penn. The paint is pretty scruffy, but the engine is sound. I am still going to tare it down and inspect everything. It will probably end up with new gaskets and oil seals at a minimum. The wheels should clean up beautifully. I already got the decal kit. I think this will turn really cool too. It will definitely be a fun one for me because it will be my first experience with a Lawn-Boy edger. I think the only thing that may be difficult to find will be the blue starter handle. We will see.

Bagging leaves problem

Hello all,

I have a Husqvarna YTH22V46FR lawn tractor with bagger that I bought new two years ago from Lowes. Here is a link to that mower.

Shop Husqvarna V-Twin Hydrostatic 46-in Riding Lawn Mower with Briggs & Stratton Engine at Lowes.com

The main problem is bagging leaves. Although the deck discharges on the right I also get leaves blowing out the left side too. This is with both hoppers empty, screen free of debris, and the chute clear and it makes no difference whether the deck is high or low, the same thing happens.

I've heard other people adding skirts around the deck and it does help but there has to be a reason why there is no suction on the left side. My old Craftsman used to pick up everything and I could see debris sucking in from the left but his Husqvarna blows out.

Anyone have some tricks? Are there other blades that may replace the stock ones?

Thanks for any info...

Dick

Changing a Lawnboy "C" series engine to "D" series piston and cylinder?

It is my understanding that one can change a "C" series engine to a later "D" series piston and cylinder. From what I have read, one has to also change the connecting rod. My question is, with a "D" series connecting rod, piston and cylinder, is that ALL? Will the "D" series con-rod fit the "C" engine crankshaft?

Oil change

Aloha all. Need to change my oil for my Kohler Commander 23, is it okay to use Delo 400, 15w-40? Or if not, what would be the best for it?? Not to sure, just bought it used with 534hrs. 04 John Deere L130 with Kohler Commander 23.

Mosaic Virus/ South Florida's lawns

A plant disease linked to sugarcane that had largely vanished 40 years ago has suddenly reappeared, becoming the first virus in the state to attack South Florida's manicured lawns.

Scientists don't know why the disease suddenly morphed and began spreading in Palm Beach and Pinellas counties. And so far they have no tools to stop it, other than cleaning lawn equipment or replacing sod with more resilient varieties, said Phil Harmon, a plant pathologist with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

At this point we don't know what the outcome will be, so were being proactive and trying to get the word out, Harmon said.

Called Sugarcane Mosaic Virus, the disease first appeared in sugarcane and sod growing near cane fields in the 1960s, Harmon said. To control the disease, growers developed resistant sugarcane. The virus virtually disappeared, only appearing sporadically in grass near cane fields and only causing yellowing.

But in 2013 something changed, he said. Lawns with the popular Floratam St. Augustine grass, the most widely used in landscaping, started dying. The virus adapted somewhere to kill this variety of turf grass, Harmon said.

When the grass started dying at a Boynton Beach subdivision last fall, Greg Russell, a field supervisor with Hometown Pest Control, assumed a fungus was making it sick and applied a fungicide. The treatment didn't work. Over the spring and summer, the grass bounced back on its own, Russell said. This fall, it started dying again. And the dead patches spread. Russell tried four different treatments before he gave up in frustration and called Harmon's office for help.

A quick examination confirmed the cause: Mosaic virus. The virus has now spread to about 150 lawns, Russell said.

No matter what we did to it, nothing changed, he said. It's tough for people to hear that there's nothing we can do. Just wait it out. Scientists do not know what changed in the virus to cause it to spread, Harmon said. And while it infects other grasses, Floratam has been hit hardest, nearly always dying when it's infected. The grass can regrow, but it will carry the virus and likely die in September or October, when conditions are right for symptoms to resurface.

In addition to sugarcane, the disease has sickened corn, sorghum and other grasses, Harmon said. It is usually transmitted by lawn equipment: the sap from infected grass can stick to mowers and weed-eaters and wind up in healthy lawns.

With no chemical treatment available, Harmon said the best defense is a good offense: clean equipment with Lysol or a commercial ammonia or consider planting another kind of grass. Zoysia grass doesn't catch the virus, but has its own problems: the grass is an invasive that can spread and crowd out all other plants. The Palmetto and Bitterblue types are more resistant St. Augustine grasses, but also have their own issues, Harmon said. Bitterblue is susceptible to chinch bugs and Palmetto doesn't do well in shade.

To try to find a cure and better document the disease, Harmon said anyone who suspects the disease has infected their grass should notify UF's plant diagnostic center or logon to its Facebook page, RapidTurfgrassDiagnosticService, to post a picture.

Scientists hope to determine if the disease is more widespread than we think, Harmon said. Our concern is that it could potentially spread like it did in the ?0s We don't know what's going to happen next, but we'd like to get a better handle on where it is by getting people to send samples.

Snowblower attachment information

Hello. Has anyone put a snowblower on their Walker mower? I want to know if it is easy to take the mowing deck off and attach the snowblower..and then reverse in the mowing season. I am frustrated with trying to get ny 2002 Sears snowblower on and off and am looking for a simple on and off with no lifting or laying down on the floor as I am now an older man. I have a 2013 MT23 . Pochie

14+ Acres of basically grass/pasture - Spend my money :)

I just bought a new house in North Carolina and I'm trying to pick out a mower. The yard is basically 14 acres of grass/pasture. It's not really bumpy but there are areas where if you cross it at 15+ MPH you'll think you should have slowed down. Once you get away from the house it's a field, not a golf course.

A little about me. I work from home on a computer. Part of why I bought this home is to add an outdoor component to my life. It's a little depressing to be indoors *all* the time. Having said that, I'm scared that I'm going to hate mowing in a year so I want to make sure it's not a horrible tasks completely devoid of fun. In my dreams, it's fun to get out there and I enjoy the process.

Regarding budget, I can open the purse but I don't want to be dumb. I'm checking for used stuff now. But if you want a number, maybe $12k for something new or $8k for something used? I don't know. I just don't want to regret buying this house/land and if it costs that much to tame the grass I'll happily pay it.

Maybe a 72" Ferris 3100? Maybe a used 104" Hustler Super Z? Maybe a 72" Exmark? Zentrac?

glow plugs for 721D ???

Dumb brainfart-type question, but does the 721D diesel engine utilize "traditional" glow plugs to start? I wonder because I cannot see a 120v grounded plug to pre-heat them, like I used to have on my diesel truck. If this mower does use glowplugs then it may be time to get new ones... I tried to start it a week ago when it was really cold and got nothing. Everything else was good to go but she wouldn't start. That makes this tractor worhtless to me as is, since I intend to be ready to throw some snow if we get another winter like last year.

Thanks.

Sears Snowblower attachment dilemma

I've had this 42" blower that I put on for winter and off for summer to mow with. I keep notes. The manual has the most confusing directions I have ever encountered, for hooking up the belt and idler assembly (at least for me). so I kept my own notes. One year it went on so easy I was shocked! (2009). Other years I am ready to dynamite it! I didn't put it on in 2013 and used my 10hp walk-behind but my hands have been aching from use (old age) so I thought I'd put the blower back on today..it being 72* here in PA. I got it all on except the main belt from the blower to the engine pulley. It appears to be 2" short. I pulled all I had but no luck. Can these belts shrink? It looks to be in good condition. I think it is 3-4 years old. Any thoughts? I am sorely tempted to get a snowblower for the Kubota or Walker that goes on and off easily. Pochie:mad:

John Deere D110 Surges at all throttle positions

I have a JD D110 and the motor surges up and down through all throttle positions. I can see the governor rod moving back and forth. The mower only has 80 hours on it. I have done all the required mtc on the mower so far. Any Ideas on what might be causing the surge problem?

Screeching noise from back of mower

Well...I sent my turf tiger in for service on Thursday and they brought it back on Friday. After backing it off the trailer the guy went to park it and upon pulling back the break it made a loud and i mean loud screeching noise. He immediately dropped the brake off. Upon putting the break on again it made the same screeching noise from rear of mower. I got on the mower

and started it up and drove it off into the yard and it did not do it with me on friday or saturday morning. However the pto would not engage the blades on friday until several attempts to put the break on and off plus stopping and restarting the engine. No problem with the blades engaging saturday morning.

Any ideas appreciated.

Intro

My name is Josh. I live in Boiling Springs, NC. If anyone knows of Gardner-Webb University, that's where Boiling Springs is. I have inherited a Grasshopper 220 from my grandfather. It is a 2003 model that only had 163 hours when I got it a few months ago. It now has 170, give or take. I had always wanted a grasshopper and have been working at a Grasshopper dealer for almost 2 years. I wanted a commercial unit for its durability but was not going to buy a new one. I knew I'd run across one sooner or later, but thought it would be at the dealership I work at. I figured someone else would get the mower from my grandfather. But I lucked up. I actually just bought a Bradley brand metal grass catcher off ebay the other day. I will have to do some "fabricating" to make it fit but it was in the money, it's what I wanted and it sure won't be the first thing I've had to make work for my application (My dad's a mechanic and a farmer so that's part of life for us). I'm glad to have found this forum. I'm sure a lot of you can help me and I surely hope there is something I can offer to help someone else. Send me a message any time. Thank you.

P.S. I also have a 1996 John Deere GT275, with a 17HP Kawasaki and hydrostatic transmission that I still use on occasion. It mows great and has never given a minute's trouble. I wish it had an hour meter on it. I would estimate the hours to 5000-5500, something like that. Though I don't sell John Deere where I work I have to say the GT275 is definitely a best-buy.

Briggs and Stratton running rich

I have a 6.5 HP B&S Quantum edge motor (123K02) on a pressure washer. It is about 6 years old with low hours (maybe 15-20) It runs , but at full throttle it stutters some. pop.pop.pop...Intermittently. As well, my plug (around 4 hours on it) was sooty. It has a manual choke carb with no adjustment screws or diaphram. The air filter is very clean. I cleaned out the carb with the normal carb spray/ wire through the jets. It was fairly clean, and the jests were not clogged. I put it back together, drained and dried the gas tank and added fresh gas.. Installed a new plug. It is still making the popping noise. Inspected the throttle and choke plate, they are wide open as they should be at full throttle (no load from sprayer). Compression is 55-60lbs. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

1970 Eska Snowblower won't stay running

1970 Eska Sno-Flyr with 5hp Tecumseh engine. Model #936. Serial #51897.

I bought it earlier this year. I cleaned it up, lubed the chains, replaced fuel filter, checked the spark plug, and ran it several times over the summer to make sure it was in good working order. Never faulted.

Now it doesn't want to run properly. Starts good at 1/4 throttle and 1/2 choke. However, when throttled up to blow snow, it will stumble and drop RPM. If the choke is set at 3/4, it will run mid to high RPM fine for a short time before stumbling. Fuel is flowing properly.

All information to solve this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

oil circulation question

I would like to know that before starting an engine with a rope pull starter....if you pull it a few times without starting the engine...does it circulate some oil around/into the motor? Thank you. Pochie
