Gravely HD52 vs BadBoy ZT Elite 54 vs ?? - 2 Acres Plus

We've purchased a 16 acre property in North Texas of which I'll need to mow 2-3 acres on. I will be mowing a couple of strips on eaither side of a gravel driveway that is about 1/4 mile long along with a gently sloped bar ditch that is about 200 feet long. The rest of the land is "yard" around a house and shop with a few slopes and a few trees. I had about decided on a 52-54" ZTM, but am wanting to make sure I won't regret not getting a 60". I don't have any experience wtih ZTM, but have used riding mowers and tractors/bushhogs in the past. Am I right in thinking the smaller 52-54 will cut better around the trees, flowerbeds, and the slopes?

Thoughts between the Gravely HD52/HD60 and the BadBoy ZT Elite 54/60 models? They all have the same Kawasaki residential engine and the 3100 Hydros. I'm happy with both dealers and they are both close by. The deck is heavier on the BB and is supported by threadable/adjustable bolts. The Gravely deck is not as thick and is supported by chains.

I have read about all I can find on these two and am planning to buy this week.

Will not turn over with key will strat f unplug and bypass

I am usually very good at figuring these out. I picked up a 50'' 0 turn Troy bilt with a 25 Kohler courage eng for a great price .Eng would not start so got it home and did some trouble shooting. Battery dead installed new nothing at the key bypassed key can jump from starter solenoid orange wire. Carb flooding needle stuck open rr carb cleaned and adj float level bench test fine. I changed the oil and plugs and started right up with bypassing the electrical harness. Back traced power from key I have ignition signal at the hour meter but nothing from there the park brake light stays illuminated when key turned to start position. Tested switch function after eng started I can plug it back in and eng will stay running until I shut it off and try to restart.
I have power at the orange wire from the ignition switch to the hour meter but nothing from there. Anyone have any ideas where to go next.

Both steering arm safety's work. Engage switches both side eng will die.
Seat safety works blades will not engage until pressure on seat.

There are 2 switched for the parking brake the top one doesn't seem to do anything.
The PTO will engage and disengage when running.

To make it run I unplug the main harness and jump it at the starter.
To shut it down I plug the harness back in and turn the key off.
The weird part is after it starts I can plug the harness back in and everything seems to work as it should no flashing park light all systems are a go.

Will the hour meter cause it not to start and run ?

Thanks guy hope someone can help.

Mower deck Craftsman DGS 6500 - model 917-288461 - mower deck belt popping off?

Help please! I'm original owner of this Craftsman DGS 6500 - have LOVED every use - 300+ hours - about 7 years now. (3 acre parcel)
I've routinely removed the deck, replaced drive and mower deck belts often, do most all maintenance myself, (including pulleys) however recently the mower deck belt pops off the minute I drop the deck to cut.
I'm mad at myself for being so stupid, and I hate the idea of bringing to Weingartz to have them charge upwards of 500 bucks to tell me an obvious reson why this is happening.
I hope this is the correct forum, ANY help would be appreciated!
thanks!

mower Battery setup questions

Hello, I have a hustler zeon that uses 4(45w) Trojan 31XHS batteries. What I wanted to do is buy another set of batteries and a charging station to put in my trailer to be charged while the mower is being used, and also a 56-Volt Lithium-ion Rapid Charger for push mower.

I would like to charge them as fast as about $1000 will allow, would like to get a couple ideas on how to go about it, what other people setups
Also in the future I would like to try and upgrade my zeon to ion batteries for longer mow times, im not very experienced in this field. so any advice help is much appreciated.

Thank you

srm-225 trimmer works but has a few issues

So I have an srm-225 straight shaft trimmer that I have had for about 4 years. I am very satisfy with its performance but within the last year and a half of so I have been having trouble with starting it. Most of the time I have to pull the starter cord multiple times to get it started. After I get it started I have to wait for it to warm up before I open up the throttle or else it will shut off. I will use it for about 20-25 minutes doing the trimming around the front of the house and then shut off and put it down meanwhile I do the mowing. 15-20 minutes later I pick it back up and start it again and it requires multiple pulls to get it to start and it needs to warm up again before I open up the throttle. "WTHeck, I just used it 20 min. ago"!!! I was looking online about how to troubleshoot this problem and I stumbled upon spark arrestor cleaning videos on youtube. I took apart the housing to get to the muffler and remove and clean the spark arrestor screen and what??? (no screen). I've never taken it apart. ( unless it was taken off the time I took it in for service like 2 years ago and never got put back on) Is it normal to not have the screen? Anyway, recently I have rebuilt and cleaned the carburetor, changed the air filter, changed the fuel lines, changed the spark plug and seems to be working fine except for the starting problem and also getting some gas/oil residue from the air filter compartment area. Can anyone give me a little bit of feedback on these issues? I greatly appreciate it.

MS260 seems like it isn't getting fuel / replacing the fuel line

Hello, I have an MS260 and I went to start it this afternoon and it just wouldn't start. It almost acted like it didn't have gas. So I checked the tank and it didn't have much so I added a but more. When I'd pull on the pull starter it didn't sound like it normally does. Like it just didn't have enough oomph to get itself started. Like I said it acts like it may not getting fuel but not quite the same symptoms I guess is the right word. It's hard to explain. Just using the saw all the time I've gotten used to how it acts. It was working fine yesterday. I used it a good portion of the afternoon. The gas is also fine. It's a fresh mix.

I thought it may be the fuel filter. So I started to fish it out and as I was getting the filter through the gas tank opening the fuel line just ripped apart. I barely put any pressure on it at all. I was just adjusting the filter so it's make it through the tank opening. So I'm assuming the line had a crack in it or something similar and it was sucking air. At least I'm hoping so I don't have to do any further investigating.

Now to get to the point... Is there a way I can test the filter to see if it is clogged. I'm going to replace it along with the line obviously, but I can't get to the parts store until probably after 5 tomorrow and they close at 5:30 so I was to do as much troubleshooting as possible to figure out what all I may need so I can grab it and get this thing fixed by tomorrow night. I can't be without the saw when the weekend comes. I lost too much valuable time today.

So I was wondering if there is a way to test to see if the filter is clogged just to help me be more certain it was the line and the filter. Also, what else should I check while I am repairing the fuel line? I'll have things moved around and undone so I'd rather check it all then to make things quicker / easier?

Thanks.

Advice about an SR1433 hydro

I am considering buying a Snapper rear engine mower for use this summer. I need to lighten the load on an old Honda push mower and my old knees. What has been your experience with the hydraulic transmission? I think I'd like to have that as well as an OHV engine. I found an SR1433 that has both and electric starter. Looks to be in good condition. How can I tell the year? It is model 331416BVE and s/n 75696949. Any input would be appreciated.

Craftsman Rototiller fuel problem....

This machine sits for 10 months every year. For the past 5 or so I have been able to resurrect it with some starter fluid and a little elbow grease. I all ways run it out of gas before letting rest.
The motor would run if I use starter fluid, or if I poured a little gas in the carb, but it would not pull the gas up from the tank. It would only run a few seconds and stop.
I removed the cover on what I call a "fuel pump" and although the diaphragm was intact, it had no sign of gas reaching it and it was stretched out pretty good, enough to where I though it would not pump.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the diaphragm, spring and the round stainless steel....follower

My question is this: What other parts should I order to get this thing up and running....short of a new carb.

Had links to 5 pictures and exploded views with part numbers but I guess that is not allowed any more. Kinda s()cks

Bent exhaust valve

I have a Craftsman Snow Thrower with an 8 HP engine (12E114-0268-E1) After using it a few weeks ago when it ran fine, I let it cool and placed a tarp over it. All snow was cleaned off the thrower. A week later I tried to start it on a cold day below freezing and it seemed locked up. I continued to try and broke the rope starter pawls. I used the electric starter with no luck. I waited until we had a day above freezing. I could get the engine spinning using the electric starter but it would not fire. Lots of backfiring and compression lock up. I disassembled almost everything and checked out the function. carb and spark seemed OK. I removed the exhaust and to my surprise found a lot of water in the muffler housing and in the cylinder head around the exhaust valve. There was at least three tablespoons total. I dumped it out and blew out the exhaust port. There was no water in the crankcase. I then removed the valve cover and discovered a bent exhaust valve push rod. My theory is I bent it when I tried to start the engine in freezing temperature and ice from the water accumulated had frozen the exhaust valve in place. As a trial I put the good intake push rod into the exhaust valve guide and it seemed to function properly. So... can I expect to be able to get the engine running again by replacing the exhaust push rod only? What is likelihood that the bent rod is the only damage? Anyone know why water in this large quantity collected in the exhaust port after I stopped the engine when it was hot? Seems like normal condensation would not explain all this water.

Generac Model 0065950 Engine Will Not Start

I've got a Generac Model 0065950 pressure washer that's on the fritz. Sorry Fritz! It was running fine but it's been sitting for about 60 days with no pre-treaments or storage considerations other than stuff it in that corner of the garage. Having lost a brand new lawn mower a few years back to bad gas after non-use for a while I would like to try and fix this one myself. So here's what I've got so far.

  1. The engine model is unknown but it's the 196cc model
  2. Verified there was a spark on the spark plug when pulling the starting cord using the old "pull the plug & ground it to the engine block" method.
  3. Removed the plastic air filter cover
  4. Pulled the carburetor back enough to release the fuel line from the tank
  5. Drained all the gas from the tank
  6. Liberally sprayed the carb with Valvoline Choke and Carb Cleaner
  7. Re-assembled all, refilled the tank with fresh gasoline, attempted starting the engine

For a brief moment I heard it start to fire up and the pull cord slackened like it was ready to start. The second pull got about the same thing but then alas, nothing, nothing, nothing. I can pull the cord until I pass out and it will not start. In desperation I opened her back up and poured a few drops of gas into the air filter above the carb. Still nothing.

So is this a dead horse and I should just order a new carb for it online? BTW, the lawnmower I lost was dropped off with a repair shop who wanted almost $30 more than what I paid for the thing brand new. So I just left it with them to do what they wanted with. This time I'd like to get at least a little more time out of the machine.

One last point. I've looked all over the net, many searches on yahoo and google to find the manual for this model. But not even Generac's website had much about this model, particularly the engine manual.

Need to buy a new self propelled mower

Hi,
I am new to this forum and joined primarily because I need to buy a lawn mower for this coming season and would like input from members.
About me: I am 86 yrs old, 5'3" and weigh in at 135 lbs. Yeah, I am a little guy.
About the yard: Located in southeast Pennsylvania just over 1 acre with about 1/3 acre in lawn. There is hardly a level spot in the yard and the only straight line is along the street. There are over 50 large trees (1 to 3 feet in diameter and 100 feet tall) and numerous smaller trees. I mention this because the lawn mower gets by far its hardest workout in the fall because it is necessary to use the basket to catch the mulched leaves.
About the mower: Must have or be- walk behind, self propelled (preferably variable speed as apposed to self paced - if there really is a difference), rear wheel drive, easy to use height adjusters, and 3-in-1 deck. Other would be nice features -key electric start (with a self charging battery) and a control to stop the blade from moving while the engine still is running. The closest that I have found so far is a Craftsman but unfortunately it has front wheel drive. I know the Toro meets most of these requirements but I have had nothing but problems with them and would like to get away from them.

Your thoughts about what mower I should consider will be greatly appreciated.

Runs but doesnt rev up

Hello again, i'm not sure if this is a problem from my other posts but i got my briggs and stratton mower running after a year or being stored in the shed.. I prime the carb 3 times as instructed and the mower starts as it should but its not reving up as it should. It idles very low but it increases when i press the primer again for a short period then goes back to idling very low. I have put a new diaphragm on and nothing seems to be blocked is this a lack of fuel issue ?

Any help will be great thanks.

PTO Rod Keeper

I have a Cub Cadet LGT1054. I am replacing the mower belt and have a question about putting back the PTO rod keeper. The illustration in the Cub Operator's Manual, page 24, shows the rod keeper inserted in a notch on the upper wheel (clutch?). I don't remember it (the rod keeper) being attached when I took it apart. Does the rod keeper go into a notch on the upper wheel? I can't find any info in the manual.

MTD ride on cutter belt tension.

I was being good and serviced the ride on mower, new belts, grease etc, and my reward is it is not cutting right. Should have nown better
MTD Mower, under the seat says -Mastercut 96 150Kg 13AH760F459 AB068L10371
Deck arangement is 2 cutter pullies, one tensioner pulley and belt drive from engine shaft. Tensioner only pulls one side of the belt.

All went well but I removed the deck by undoing the adjusting bolt right at the front of the deck (T bar) and now can't seem to get the setup right.
I reattached everything and with a new belt (now damaged so old one back on, still fine no wear on it) levelled the deck with the front adjuster which used nearly all of the thread on it.
Started up and engaged the cutters, smell of burning rubber and no cutter movement as the belt not moving just rubbing on a pulley, not sure which one.
I have tried readjusting and can cut with it, had to use it today as grass bad.

Although the tensioner moves back ok (I think) the belt is not very tight when cutter lever is engaged, I can move it about 2cn (1") either way. It is gripping the front pulley and works ok.
Problem is that to get the belt tension like this the cutters are down at the front by about 1cm (1/").
If I level the deck by raising the front the belt is too slack to grip.

I am levelling based on the cutting blade front and rear the same, rear deck wheels on the ground. At this point on low setting the front of the deck is about 1cm from the ground.
Should I lower the deck using the two rear adjusters so that the rear of the blade drops so levelling it ? Never touched these since new, about 10 yrs ago.
Any advice appreciated John

Tecumseh OH180 wont start

New to the forum. Learned long time ago to ask the experts if you want to learn something, so here goes.
I have a Tecumseh OH180 that has quit running and I can't get it started. Getting spark, good compression ( 120 psi ) , but it floods out very quick.
Had the carburetor rebuilt, but still floods out. It has electric fuel pump as the fuel tank is below the engine. Looking for some wisdom as to what would could be my problem. The engine is in a Case 1816 uni-loader, so it is sitting in the middle of my shop and I can't move it without the engine running.
Any advice would be welcomed.

New EGO 21" 56 volt lithium-ion cordless self propelled lawn mower

This is the first walk behind lithium-ion battery powered lawn mower that I've seen. Up until now, self propell has only been available on the heavier lead acid battery powered lawn mowers. This mower is powered by a 420Wh lithium-ion battery, that is the largest currently available. They are currently being sold exclusively by Home Depot for $599. A push version is also available with a smaller 280Wh battery for $499.

They are also selling a new 530cfm jet fan blower for $299.

Given up on repairing Briggs recoil spring, what to do about the mower?

My grandfather passed away last year and when I was cleaning out his shed I found and old Murray 20 Briggs mower. It had sat with gas in it for years. I dumped out the gas and put in fresh gas and after a few pulls it started right up. Of course there was smoke, but it started. I needed a lawn mower too because I had just bought some land and was starting the process of cleaning up a clearing where I will build a small structure.

So I mow my place a couple of times and notice the chord is rotten and about to break in a spot. After mowing a bit the chord broke. I had no idea those old Briggs used a metal coiled band as a spring. I pulled off the top cover and bent the band. I bought a new band hoping I could replace it and realized I'd bought the wrong band. This one had a bend on the end that connected to the plastic reel. I though I could make it work but once I finally got it in just didn't sit or wind right. I was able to manually wind the plastic wheel for a while until the band bent. So then there was no tension on the plastic reel so even if I wound it up once I pulled on the string it'd just fly out all loose as I pulled.

I put off fixing it all winter. Monday I bought the right band for it and finally got it in and it was retracting great. But the piece of the band that connected to the reel ended up pulling out of the reel and the space it sat in was too wide to hold it. So I bent the band and hooked it to the reel and got it all working to where it was retracting but I could tell the spring wanted to pull out of the reel. Which it did.

I've given up on fixing it. I've just sunk too much time into it and if the chord ever breaks again I just can't go through this again. It's a heck of a little mower. Just what I needed. It isn't the fanciest but I like it.

Is there anything I can do? Any way to rig it to where I can pull it and start it and then just manually rewind the wheel when I need to start it again? I hate to trash it.

I was thinking about buying one of the newer Briggs engines and putting it on the body of mine. But I haven't called to check on prices to see what'd that cost. And I haven't checked if any would fit the body.

What are my options? I really need a mower. It saves me so much time than using my weed eater. This one runs great I just don't have a way to start it.

Thanks.

Why stop production of Honda tractors and riding mowers?

I have an 89' honda 3011h and it's been a great investment. Absoulutely no complaints and would not have hesitated to buy a new one. Last year, I wanted to upgrade to a larger mower and found Honda's not producing tractors anymore. I bought a Hustler 52-Raptor instead (no problems so far). I still use my old Honda. I have to tell you it would have been good to take a test drive on a shiny new Honda 52-inch ZRT!

Honda lawn mowers are built at Honda's factory in Swepsonville, NC (HPE in photo). Right next door is Honda Research and Development (HRAN), where new products are designed and tested, and they have a +4 acre testing field.

"When you're mulching grass, you have to make sure the lawn mower is cutting the grass evenly so you don't get big clumps of grass in your yard," said HRA-N Test Engineer Andrew Bejcek. "That's the reason we have grass from different regions of the world growing on the test field, so we can make sure our lawn mowers work on the same kinds of grass as our customers'."

The test field is where the majority of testing is done for Honda's lawn and garden products. But, there is other more sophisticated equipment for testing Honda's power equipment as well, like HRA-N's climate-controlled vibration table, anechoic sound chamber, scanning electron microscope and high-speed video cameras.

gxv140 Rebuild Question - do I go further?

I had a problem last fall where something seemed to break inside the engine - loud banging internal to the engine. I shut it down before any catastrophic failure happened and the engine did not seize. I decided to open it up and have a look to see if I could fix it.
I pulled the engine and removed the oil pan and found that the bolts holding the connecting rod assembly to the crankshaft where backed out so far the lower cap was almost completely off. You can see in the picture where the bolts are backed out.

My question is: do I continue tearing down the engine or just tighten the connecting rod bolts to spec and put it back together? Right now the only new parts are a oil pan gasket and maybe a lower oil seal, I haven't even removed the head. I could remove the head to see what's going on and then potentially replace the rings, they cost $20. But I've never deglazed or honed cylinder walls before.

Any suggestions? I have had a lot of overheating problems with this mower in the past. I think I fixed it by no longer running higher octane fuel. Also notice how dirty it is, very sludgy oil, I suspect from overheating. This oil is less than 1 season of mowing in kansas city area.

Just moved Into a new house in Dec. I have a patch of grass that stayed green and looks as though it might be fescue, but I'm not sure. It's a different color than the other grass, and it almost looks low growing and possibly creeping. I live in Chesterfield MO if that helps. I have about a half acre of flat land, but no one took are of the lawn. I'm going to have my work cut out for me

Toro 2000 vs 3000

I wanted to get you guys opinions on if the cost of Toro Z master 3000 is worth the premium over the 2000. The 3000 is $1200 more.

The 3000 has the following upgrades over the 2000:

Deck is 7 gauge on sides as well as top. 2000 is 10 gauge on top and 7 gauge on sides.

Spindles are greasable versus sealed.

Tires are slightly larger.

5 year warranty vs 4 year.

Upgraded seat

Are these options worth the extra $1200?

Residential use only... 4 acres per week.

Thanks.

STIHL KM90 used value

Trying to sell a STIHL KM90 power head. I brought down the price to 165$. It has been used for about two summers that's it. Still runs very good, has new coil, air filter and spark plug. I was just wondering if the price was allright? No one wants it. I got an offer for 100$ that I refused...

I think I paid about 350$ for it in 2013.

Charging issues

Ome of my riders, Husqvarna YTH 2348, has a charging issue. With full throttle at battery terminals same voltage as wihtout running at all. Battery will die with continuous use. I have replaced the voltage regulator, no change, battery is new. There are two white wires (smaller wires) coming into voltage regulator that have no voltage on them while running, I am assuming those are charging wires and should have 18V or so coming in. I have read that this cvould be faulty ignition switch or obviously could be stator, anybody know how to test the ignition switch or narrow this down more?

Engine Honda gxv160 lawnmower motor

I have recently changed this motor from a push to a self propelled. On starting the engine it now revs at extremely high rate. (don't think it could rev any higher).
What do I need to adjust to correct this? Could it be the governor inside the motor in incorrect position? Carby not touched at all. Valves adjusted, exhaust 10 intake 8. Is this correct settings? Found marks on Cam & Crank shaft, all lined up. When pulled to start, ran on second pull  Can any body help please?

New Generac Pressure Washer no start (FIXED)

My father bought this pressure washer brand new from wally world. I assembled it, later he added oil and gas. About three weeks later he decided to use it on a rental property. He couldn't get it to start, told him nearest Generac dealer is 45 miles away.

I decided to check it out, pulled spark plug out and spark was good. Took air filter off, noticed a drop of fresh oil on air filter. Sprayed a shot of starting fluid into carb and started right up. I noticed exhaust blowing some white smoke. On this carb it has a carb drain screw so checked for fuel in carb. Out pours oil from carb bowl, let it pour out till it's just gas. Put drain screw and fire it up. Let it smoke for several minutes until it fouls out plug. Cleaned plug and after a few more minutes smoke clears. As you probably know there was some oil already in it, upside down, sideways on its way. He used it the next day, all good.

Thought I would share this if anyone has this problem one day.

Engine dies - need help please!

Engine starts fine, with full tank of gas would run forever, but when you engage the transmission or the tiller tines, it immediately dies. If you disengage as the motor starts to die, then it perks right back up and keeps running. When the engine dies, you can restart immediately and it runs fine. If the engine is running and you push the tiller across the yard, it starts to run rough. When you stop pushing the tiller, the engine again runs fine. Neighbor is small engine repairman, and has gone through the carbeurator twice, changed spark plugs, and he thought it might be governor but has not tried that as yet. Has given up in frustration. Does this sound familiar to anyone out there?
I know if I took this problem to a shop, they would try 6 different things and charge for each one - not there yet. Would like to solve this problem myself without doing that.

42a707 Won't Start - Troubleshooting help

Preface: I already searched the forums and found a thread or two on similar issues already but they go into some detail that I'm unfamiliar with. Thus this thread.

A little background here. I'm a 27 year old male Computer Network Engineer with limited mechanical training. Though my father is a master senior technician for Ford so I think, with a little guidance from the pros here, I can probably get this old mower working again.

Was working before winter set in but now I turn the key and I hear a slight click but that's all it does. Where do I start with this? What tools will I need to borrow and are there any manuals readily available for doing any of the work I might need to do? I'm technically inclined and can follow directions pretty well I'm just inexperienced. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

New bronco owner with maintenance questions

Well I just picked up a brand new Bronco riding mower 42 inch from Lowes. I mowed the lawn once so far and it ran great. Much better than a push mower. I've read the manual several times and in my opinion it lacks a lot of information. I'm pretty handy I believe but I hate guessing when it comes to properly maintaining things. In the manual, it says lube pedal pivot points. What is recommended? WD40 or that thick grease stuff? Or that spray white lithium grease? Same thing with lube front axle and rims. First off, how do you lube a rim? I don't understand what they mean about putting lube on a rim. And again, where exactly do I lube the front axle and what product do I use? Also says to reoil the air filter precleaner. I assume lowes sells air cleaner oil? Sorry if these sound like dumb questions but I want to make sure I maintain this so it lasts me trouble free for many years (I hope). Also, are there any other tips not mentioned in the manual? Thank you!

Raptor or Raptor SD ?

New here , looking at getting a zero turn mower for under $4,000 , I have about 1 acre mostly flat looking at the 42" Raptor and Raptor SD
I will not be putting a lot of hours on the mower , the upgrade on the Raptor SD that stand out to me

1) Motor : Kohler 7000 vs Kohler Pro Performance 7000
2) Transmission : HydroGear EZT vs HydroGear 2800 this one needs to be service filter and fluid change is it worth the extra maintenance ? The HrdroGear EZT is a sealed unit no extra maintenance
3) Deck height : 4.1" vs 4.5
4) Blade Speed 16,700 fpm vs 18,600 fpm
5) Seat : SD has better seat with arm rest

Price different between the two $2.800 vs $3,800 is it worth $1,000 for the SD :confused3:

The other one that I also looked at Toro 42" MX4250 $3,600

Any opinions on the three or suggestion on a different make/model in this price range :anyone:

Toro help please

Hello everyone.. I'm new to the forum and I need some guidence before I pull the trigger on a new mower... I have about 1.5 acres of what I call a country yard... by country I mean the yard for the most part is level, but it has some bumps in it.. but the most important thing to note is that along the entire length of our front yard we have a ditch... I'm guessing the ditch is 300 to 350 feet long and about a 20 degree ( that's just a guess ) pitch... for the past 14 years I've been using a snapper 14 horse lawn tractor.. well old red finally died on me and now I have to buy something new.. my original plan was to just buy another snapper tractor... my old one had a low profile, but the new ones all sit much higher and that concerns me when I'm on that ditch.. even with my older low profile snapper I would throw all my weight up on the side of the seat when I was cutting the ditch.... since I didn't feel the higher profile lawn tractors were safe I decided to look into a ztr... reviews I've read for the Toro ztr's have been pretty good... I'm currently trying to decide between 3 different models... two of the three have 50" cuts... one of them has the two bars you use to control the mower the other 50" mower has a steering wheel, yet it is considered a ztr tractor... the two models are SW5000 and SS5000. The third model is also a steering wheel ztr tractor, the SW4200. My questions for you are: would either of the 50" models be safer on the slopes of that ditch because of the wider stance and bigger tires, or will it be more of a hinderence because it is heavier... also, I have read that the ztr tractors ( ones with steering wheels ) do better on slopes because you're actually using the front wheels to guide the mower... is this true... I'm looking at spending at least 3 grand here and I don't want to make a 3 thousand dollar mistake.. any guidence you could offer me would certainly be appreciated... oh, btw, all three mowers use a toro v twin engine ( I believe 708 cc ). Again, thank you in advance for any help you throw my way...

In-line fuel shut-off valve

I'm a new member here. Bought a new 52-in. raptor last year and very happy with it so far. Last fall, I was prepping it for winter storage and had a gallon or two of gas in the tank. I'm thinking of installing an in-line fuel shut-off valve. My old mower (a Honda 3011 had one and all I did was add a little stabilizer, close the valve, start it and run it out of gas. Never had any problem starting it in the spring. Anybody have any comments?

3, no volts to starter either of course
4. replaced solenoid
5. I have cut the wires going into the seat saftey switch and twisted them together
6. new battery and it tests good

can anyone help me where I should start next please?

Smoke Coming Out of Muffler - Honda GXV120‬

Honda HR214-SX
Engine: GXV120 – 118 cubic cm

When I started the engine, a lot of white smoke was blowing out of the muffler. The mower/engine also made a “loud noise”. I wish I could better describe the noise, but because of the smoke, I quickly shut off the engine. I did not have enough time to determine if the noise was internal to the engine or if it was related to other mower parts.

I removed the cylinder head and checked the head gasket. I did not see any “burn marks” on the head gasket. But I did see a couple of areas where part of the film that covers the gasket was missing. (see attached pictures). What I don’t know is if the possible “damaged” areas of the gasket were caused when the gasket was removed (which often happens) or if that had become weak area of the gasket allowing oil into the cylinder. The part of the gasket around the cylinder looked in great shape which makes me doubt that it was the head gasket, but I could be wrong.

There was a lot of carbon buildup on pistons and head which I cleaned.

The only other thing I can think of is a bad or broken piston ring. Is there a way to troubleshoot a bad piston ring without taking the engine apart? Any other troubleshooting steps to determine the cause of smoke coming out of the muffler?

Thanks

Briggs 17hp wont start and stay running

I just recently rebuilt my Briggs and Stratton, Murray mower. After getting it all back together, now it doesn't want to run. I have done all of the normal things like rebuild the carb... a few times. Check the plugs.. you know, all of that good stuff.

So, if I try to start the mower... IF it starts, it will not idle for long before dying. IF, I move the throttle all the way up, it revs up so much that it seems the engine is going to blow! I am not sure what I can do at this point. Maybe I messed something up on the linkage for the throttle? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am currently uploading a video to YouTube and will post as soon as I can.

Any Ideas?

Doing some Snappers, and this forum looks like the spot.

I like a good forum, I've run a few myself, and I always utilize them whenever possible & register if appropriate. in this case, I'm looking at 4 similar Snapper mowers (models numbers coming later with better light) and the plan is to salvage 2 good runners, maybe 3. i'll be starting a thread in the Snapper area after this howdy.

I do motor-assisted bicycles, pretty seriously too. i'll share about that if anyone's interested. anyways, I have the know-how to revive a lawn mower worth reviving, and a couple of these chassis are rock solid.

if anyone can help, just point me at topics or pages, I'm happy to do my own reading. thanks in advance!

(I just learned i'll need to resize my pics before I can attach 'em. ok, i'll go start my new thread when I have all that and the model numbers, too)

What's best way to tie down lawntractor on trailer?

Hi all,

How do you guys tie down lawntractors on a trailer so the tie-down straps don't bounce loose?
No matter how tight I get the ratchet straps, one or two always seem to come loose.

I know how they're coming loose but I can't find a way to prevent it. The trailer is a 7x4 with sides & loading ramp, it has balloon tyres, no suspension - bumps in the road make the trailer bounce, the mower's tyres compress, creating a momentary slack in the strap tension which can cause the strap hooks to unhook from the trailer hooks/cleats.

I currently use three ratchet straps from side to side: over & around the front and rear axles, and one over the driver's footwell.

Fill in the blank contract vs computer filled contract

For years I have been doing all my contracts on the computer. I would have a template and then change the adress, name, price, etc. for each client.

For this year, I was thinking about typing out my contracts on the computer and leaving blanks and then filling in the blanks while I am at the customer. I think this would be quicker and lock done jobs/contracts faster. What do you guys/girls think?

New to the forum, I'm looking to buy a new zero turn lawn mower to keep up with my ~5 acres. I'm looking for a 60-61" deck and don't want to spend a ton of money. Just looking for people who have opinions on the lawn mowers I have been looking at or on ones I should be looking at . I have kind of been looking at the John Deere Z665, Swisher ZTR2460KA and ZTR2760BS, the Exmark PNS740GKC60400, and the Bob-Cat FastCat Pro 61" Kawasaki. I would appreciate any information/opinions people have. Trying to figure out the best bang for my buck here.

Thanks Guys.

Timing a Kohler K321

I know the specs call for .020 on the points, but what if the engine has a lot of hours on it? Would the settings lean towards over the .020 or under like .015 or something? Anybody have any experience with this? At .020 the engine has trouble starting and seems to backfire out muffler and carburetor.

Fuel oozes out of carb orifice a while after shut down

2013 Husqvarna LTH154. It has a Walbro LMK carb fitted to a Kohler Courage 15HP [597cc SV470-3212, S/N 4304637623 build date 15/2/13].

Fuel is collecting inside the air cleaner housing and dripping on the floor - not a large amount, but concerning nonetheless. (I suspect it may be entering the engine too, diluting the oil.)

I tested the fuel cut-off solenoid and the plunger wasn't springing back up every time so I replaced it. But that hasn't cured the problem.

About an hour or two after shutting down the engine the fuel starts to ooze out of the carb.

I finally tracked down where it is coming from - the venturi on the left side of the intake which leads down to the float bowl.

I'm suspecting the float needle, but when I checked it under a magnifying glass it looked good.

Have any of you guys come across this problem before?

What do you think it might be?

Thanks for reading.

Regards,
Chris

Engine won`t start after Winter break

Hi all,

I have a "Rally" branded Ride on mower powered by a 12.5 HP OHV Briggs and Stratton engine.

The mower is approx 9 years old and hasn`t missed a beat - until now!.

In short, after a winter break, I can not start the engine. There is a rapid "machine gun" clicking when I turn the key , but nothing else. There is also a feint smell of Sulphur in the air.

I am no expert , but have put in a new spark plug and recharged the battery, but to no avail. If anyone could help point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance

Steve

2003 Turf Tiger dies when blades engaged

Just got an 03 Turf Tiger 72" deck with 27hp Kawasaki. It seems to run fine, but I've noticed when the mower is sitting still and I engage the blades the mower just dies. However, if I am moving forward and engage the deck it seems to engage and work fine. Anyone know what this issue could be? It definitely worries me how every time you pull the engage knob is just cuts the engine off.

Thanks in advance

Scag Walk Behind With Bent Engine Deck

Howdy all and thanks for the great forum! I purchased a used SWZ52V that was involved in an accident. It bent the engine deck and cracked the motor sump/oil pan :frown: Last night I pulled the engine and removed the oil pan and searched ebay for a used replacement, found one for $55 + shipping. Does anyone have experience with straightening/bending engine decks? I can cut, weld and fabricate and have access to torch and welder. I called my local Scag dealer and requested drawings and or dimensions of engine deck but they told me to contact Scag, which I did through their website but no responses yet. Thanks again all

Tachometer Advice

I trust everyone is doing well. Spring is just around the corner here. I can see tree buds starting to swell a bit.

I want to add a tachometer on my mower (Hustler Raptor SD, Kaw FR691V-A527-R). I have a spot for it on the left side of the unit where I can cut a hole in the plastic wheel cover thingy. I searched a bit and found a company that offers some for small engines and includes an hour meter. The hour meter has the old style rolling digits which is what I would like instead of those digital hours meters which fade in the sun and occasionally short out and scramble the hours.

I e-mailed them and they asked me the following question that I need your help with. Specifically, "What is the planned signal source for the tach? (Alternator / charging circuit, flywheel teeth, crank shaft “tone wheel”)".

What should I tell them? To be honest I have no clue what to tell him or what would be best.

Thanks in advance!!!! .......... Rhett

JACOBSEN TWIN CYLINDER / 2 CYCLE ENGINE ???? IS IT TRUE?

POSTED THIS THREAD UNDER JACOBSEN HISTORY BUT I THOUGHT IT MIGHT GET MORE ATTENTION HERE, SEE THE THREAD FOR MORE PHOTOS

I recently acquired a very unusual engine. I posted some photos on smokstak forum and they came through with the info that this engine was an early Jacobsen twin cylinder / 2 cycle engine. I can not find any photos or info on such an engine. Anyone who might have more info and some photos of this engine and what it powered would be greatly appreciated. One person had a blurry picture of a brochure showing a similar engine mounted on a reel mower. His info said it wasn't produced many years ?? This engine turns over and has good compression, I haven't tried to get it started yet but will very soon.
Thanks

Gas feed to a Weedeater (Zama) carb

I have a Weed Eater Featherlite which I use in Spain for keeping the undergrowth under control - when it works, that is. It has a good spark and so, assuming the gas pump and carb needed overhaul, I bought a Zama carb repair kit from Frisbee's.
Now that I am reassembling the fuel system, I can't work out which gas pipe goes to which part of the carb. I have the maker's exploded diagram but that just shows the two clear tubes (55 and 56) (which I am replacing) but it gives no clue as to which way round they go.
So... the one which comes out the bottom of the gas tank - does its other end fit the socket closer to the press-bulb? Also there's a loose piece of plastic moulding in the bottom of the tank - what does that do? Is it designed to hold the end down?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Alec

Staghorn Sumac

I have a nice patch of Staghorn Sumac at my home which just seems to grow wild. I was thinking that I wanted to start a patch of it at my camp. What would be the best way to do this. Plant some of the small plants or some of the seed pods ? It grows and spreads fast and was hoping it would be easy to start a new patch. The birds love it and the colors are a nice red in the fall season. I don't understand it but for some reason Sumac has a bad name and I think it is because of the poison sumac which is completely different then Staghorn.

How to Clean Oil Suction Gun

I bought this pump to extract oil out of the tranny of my truck. It's just this simple pump where you pull a handle and it sucks oil into the metal reservoir. I would love to know how to clean this so that I can change the oil on my small mowing equipment that has hard to reach places (i.e.: gear reduction oil on aerator).

Toro MX4800 seems very thirsty

Hi Guys,
I'm from "Down Under" where the grass grows when it rains (sometimes).
Recently I bought a new Toro MX4800, $AU 8,800.
I has a Kohler V2, 21hp, model ZT720 motor.
The fuel tank is not sufficient to do 8 or 9 hours mowing, it holds 18.9 litres of fuel, re-filling is a pain in the bum as the filler cap is quite small, about 60mm in dia and you cannot see the fuel level rising in the tank unless you stop pouring and look at the sight gauge on the front.
Re-filling when the motor is hot is a definite health hazard !

Q: Any clues on improving fuel consumption ?

On this model, Toro have seen fit to fit "wing tanks" over each drive wheel but they are cosmetic as no provision to hold any fuel.
A reserve supply would be a great asset.
I am looking for a LHS "wing tank" off a wrecked Toro or some other make that I could adapt to provide an additional 5 litres (1.3 gal in your lingo).

Q: Anyone got any ideas on this subject ?

Appreciate your considered responses.

Cheers,
BunyipOz

Aerating and weed pricing

I am currently starting a lawn care business, and was wondering what you guys charge for residential aeration and overseeding.
I have been mowing for a while now, but looking to expand and start aerating, fertilizing, landscaping, and snow removal as well.
There are only a small handful of co. where I am that offer this service and most are around $350-400 1/2 acre to aerate, overseed, and fertilize.
Aeration alone is around $150 1/2 acre, is this ballpark of what you guys get? I am in Kentucky with mostly fescue lawns and normal size lots are .25-.75 acre.

ac powered starter for lawn mower

Hi, when I lived in the snow belt I loved the plug in starter for my huge blower. Now no more snow and I am 30 years older and if i don't use a spray starter fluid, can't start. The mower has battery start but just not reliable and using spray a hassle.

So, I cannot find anyone who makes a "plug in" starter on a lawn mower. I realize "distance" is probably why no one does but I'm sure that is not an obstacle for many.

1st, does anyone make one.
2nd, if not has anyone modified a mower to handle an a plug in starter or added one.

By the way, my Cub Cadet 21" walk behind battery starter mower sucks.

thanks russell

toro snowthrower with suzuki engine always flooding.

Toro 38180 sn# 0014124 Suzuki 47pk9 engine with original Mikuni carburetor. 1990 model. a ccr2000 unit.
This machine had bad gas left in over the summer and was completely plugged come winter. It was taken apart and cleaned in a heated ultrasonic cleaner multiple times to get it cleaned out. All the jets and port were blown out with air and reassembled. it started on the first pull without any priming and ran very well, then about a week later when it was needed, it wouldn't start. It was flooded and spark plug very wet. After cleaning the plug, tried to prime and choke it to start and it just fouled the plug again. (it has a good spark)
Tried pulling the starter with the plug out to clean out any gas in the cylinder, replaced the plug and choked it but no priming; it fouled the plug again. Remove plug, clean and replace, try to start again with no choke and no priming, it started first pull and ran fine. Cleaned the driveway well and never sputtered or stalled.
Next day it would not start, plug fouled and wet. tried to clean and restart many times but it would not start, always fouled with wet gas.
Took the carburetor apart again but found nothing wrong.
While looking at Toro's break down of the carburetor (form 3313-923), I see a piece called "spacer float" part #27 . I'm not familiar with it and didn't find it in the carburetor. Is this piece something that is only found in some models or is it really missing from this unit? What is it's purpose and could it cause this flooding problem?
I originally suspected that the float wasn't shutting off the gas flow and over filling but the float and shut off needle worked correctly. All jets, needles and ports were clean, float had no gas in it. float spring was in place and working. Pilot jet was set at 1 turn from bottoming out.
I was tempted to just replace the carburetor, but it's pricey. I Did find an affordable aftermarket carb made by Flip manufacturing stating it is a direct replacement for the original 81-4690 carb. (supersede #95-7935)
If anyone has run into this problem, please enlighten me a little.
Rex

Can a GXV120 be rebuilt?

I took it to my local Honda dealer, he told me to forget about trying to rebuild the motor, started showing me new models.

I want to fix it.

Hard to start cold, but impossible to start once warm.

Seems to have lost compression, I was thinking a hone & rings, or maybe a burnt valve.
Ive rebuilt many auto engines before, im sure I can handle a mower engine with some guidance.
Can it be done?
Are the parts available?
Its an old model, made in japan, HR194 / GXV12-1199573

having trouble uploading photos.

Getting a Fastrak SD

After one year rolling it over in my head, looking at various different manufacturers, test driving, procrastinating, etc., I ordered a Fastrak SD. Since I'm in Kansas, and they're made about 120 miles from my home, I hope to get it by the week of 15 Feb.

I was switching back and forth between Fastrak and Fastrak SD, and just said "what the heck", pay for what you want and forget it.

Originally wanted the new flipdeck, but the tiny wheels on the front made me turn it down. Should be a great mowing season!!

Need electrical schematic for a Honda GXV140 engine

Could some one help provide a wiring schematic for this engine or a Honda electrical diagram that is similar. There is a connector disconnected from the ignition coil and not sure if it should be grounded or not. I think it goes to a switch on one of the cables. I would rather just bypass the switch if I can. Planning on taking the engine off the lawn mower and planning on using it on a post hole digger. Can't start the engine at this point.

Older Briggs / Homelite trash pump question

I have this older Briggs horizontal, I'm guessing about a 3.5 hp, not really sure because at some point the blower housing has been replaced so I don't have an engine code. The cylinder bore is 60mm. I tried to call B&S (twice) to see if they could look up their info to see what a 60mm bore would match to hp. Both times the B&S "assistants" were young girls who had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. One tried to convince me the engine code on this old flathead would be stamped on the valve cover. Good grief.

Anyway, I need to replace the rings and this engine is mounted to a Homelite trash pump and I have to remove the pump to open the case. The pump is connected to the block by four bolts only accessible from the inside of the pump. Furthermore, those bolts are behind the pump impeller. I have been somewhat delicate in trying to figure out how to remove the impeller with no success. I cannot find a service manual for the pump so I have no idea how the impeller is connected to the crankshaft. Is anyone familiar with this pump? Can someone tell me how to remove the impeller? I don't know if it is pressure fitted, threaded to the shaft (CW or CCW) or some other way. I don't want to cause any damage to the pump.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The Homelite pump model number is 110SU1 1/2-1B, Serial number 50604880

My Lawn Equipment Repair Thread

I tried to make a lawn equipment repair thread before, but I made the mistake of attaching too many pictures to the first page and it took forever to load. I couldn't edit my posts to change it, so I decided to start over.

I have also created a blog at primerbulb120.wordpress.com that will parallel this thread. Feel free to comment - I appreciate feedback!

This Stihl FS 55 RC just passed its final test. It needs a bump knob for the trimmer head and needs to be cleaned up, but it's almost done. I already have a buyer for it.

It was given to me for free. It wouldn't start (sat with gas in it) and the owners didn't need it anymore. A new carburetor, air filter and fuel filter got it running like new.

Next I changed the oil on a Craftsman 917.377280. It is fully functional, but I still need to clean it up and restore the paint before it will be for sale.

I previously spent an hour converting it to autochoke because I didn't have a primer bulb for it.

After that I replaced the starter rope on a Troy-Bilt TB65SS. I also spent about an hour tuning the carburetor. It is now ready for testing although it may need to be tuned again.

I tried converting it to split shaft, but the clutch wouldn't work right with that setup.

Then I worked on a Poulan Pro 262 chainsaw. After a carb cleaning, new fuel lines and filter it ran - but WAY too rich. Something was obviously wrong with the carb, as it still ran too rich with the mixture screws closed all the way.

This particular carb has a large triangular welch plug inside covering the idle passages. I replaced the plug during my rebuild and apparently installed it wrong, allowing gas to flow past the mixture screws into the carb throat from the metering chamber. I pulled it out and replaced it again and the saw runs reasonably well. It's not perfect though, so I'll have to tune it more tomorrow.

Craftsman Riding mower won't shut down when hot.

I Have an older Craftsman 10 HP 30" rear engine riding mower. The mower starts and stops fine when the mower is cold, but after a few minutes running, the mower will not cut off (either by Ignition switch or by safety cutoff).
The mower will cut off fine until its been running for about 3-5 minutes.

I have replaced the ignition switch (No effect)
I have measured the ohms from the kill wire to ground and it is not grounded when the mower isn't able to stop normally.

I am thinking it may be a bad system ground (but the system ground is 8 inches from the engine, why would running 5 minutes make the ground fail???)

I have torn the mower apart and tested all the safety switches and wiring, and I can find no switches that don't work nor any skinned or broken wires.
Any advice would be welcome.
