Looking to buy a push mower for mainly mulching

Hello all,

First off, a merry late christmas and a happy new year too all of you!

Secondly, my predicament.

I have about 1.3 acres of land and some of it is unaccessable to our two riding mowers (old Cub cadet and newer Husq) and our 17 year old Craftsman mower bit the dust recently. I would be using this mower to mow (moreso mulch) this area and mulch leaves in our front yard between the trees.

I've been looking through forums, reviews, and other sites for all the information I can get... and... well, it seems that I am even more clueless as to what to get than before I started, which is why I turn to you guys.

Here is some information of what our terrain is, our needs/wants/budget:

Acreage to be mowed/mulched: Approximately .4-.5 acres

What will be mowed/mulched: Leaves (A LOT OF LEAVES), small twigs, and grass. The grass will not be terribly thick (since grass doesn't grow very well on our property). Bagging capabilites are not relevant to me.

Terrain: Here's where it gets tricky, our property has several terrains- hard & rocky, sand, dirt/soil. The part that will be mulched is primarily a sandy terrain. It will also have slight inclines.

Wants: A push mower with RWD or AWD (unless you guys suggest against it) that can withstand more abuse than one on a traditional suburban manicured lawn. I would like it to be relatively light (less than 100lbs) since we actually have to lift it above a retaining wall to mow the unaccessasble area.

Budget: My budget is flexible in the sense that if you can recommend and convince me that spending the extra dough on a mower would be more worth it in the long run, then I'll consider it. I do, however, want to stay in the range of $400+/- as the max (before tax).

I've visted HD and Lowes, and currently the Honda HRR216K9VKA: Honda 21 in. 3-in-1 Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Mower with Auto Choke-HRR216K9VKA - The Home Depot

and the Toro 20332: Toro Personal Pace Recycler 22 in. Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower with Briggs & Stratton Engine-20332 - The Home Depot

as well as the cheaper Lawn Boy 10732 Lawn-Boy 21 in. Rear Wheel Drive Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower with Kohler Engine-10732 - The Home Depot

but I really haven't the slightest clue of what would be sufficient. I do want a mower that will last and is well built.

So if you have any suggestions, lay them on me,

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

It is now after midnight here in Scotland so from me to all of you - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope 2015 is a great year for everybody and all your goals are achieved.

dangerously high rpms

Bought a JD 165 hydro a few weeks ago. I read this on another post talking about the same thing . when I get it started it revs up well past the rated rpm for the fb460v on it and the only way to bring it down is to shut it off. When I bring it up to full rpm the butterfly opens fine but doesn't close when I bring it down. Do I have to take the engine apart to fix it? If so what do I have to fix?

Super Z (BigDog Diablo x1060) or Xonei for residential accounts?

I am in the process of starting a side lawn business again (I had one back in the 1990s). I have a 4 acre church property that I will be submitting a bid for next week. I know the Xonei and the SuperZ (actually the Big Dog Diablo x1060 35hp which is the same) will both handle this property. The Xonei will obviously handle it a little bit slower.

But I will probably be getting more upscale residential accounts than 4 acre properties. Yesterday I went to a local mower shop that had both the Xonei and a demo 8 hour Big Dog X1060 35hp that I tried out briefly. The Big Dog demo is being offered at a significant discount because they are trying to get rid of it. It is their last 2014 model. It is priced, out the door, about $1,400 more than the Xonei.

I have no problem paying the extra $1,400 for so much more of a machine. However the sales man actually steered me towards the Xonei for upscale residential lawns. He thinks the X1060 35 hp mower might be "too much mower" for upscale manicured lawns, even though it can bush hog like no one's business.

Both of these are 60"

What do you guys think?

Lost a piece from my Carb can somone tell me the name of it?

Repairs Solving Mower Deck Breaking Belts Issues

GRADE 8 BOLT.jpg

GRADE 8 BOLT HEAD.jpg

Most residential mower decks have a weak spot. Idler arms are assembled to deck at factory with 5/16" or 3/8" diameter bolts, much too small to handle torque & movement. A grade 8 standard coarse thread bolt 7/16" diameter 2 1/2" long with a shank of 1 1/2" with 2 flat washers & a self locking nut will solve your problem. A 7/16" drill bit is needed to make repair of drilling through deck, bushings, idler arms, etc., machine shops are well equipped to make this repair for a small fee. When servicing tractor, apply grease or oil as best you can to shank of bolt idler arms area.

Engine Cub-Cadet 2186 Kohler will not start with key

I am pulling my hair out trying to get the beast started. It was running perfectly until I washed the engine with a hose. I can start it with a scre driver across the solenoid. Once running it runs fine, mower deck turns on and off, with the brake locked it runs with me off the seat. It appears to me that the seat and brake safety switches are working. I tried shorting across the 2 orange wires on the back of the pto switch and still could not start with the key. When I turn the key I do hear a clicking noise under the air cleaner which I am told is good. Any suggestions?

Lawn World another pile of cheap Chineese Junk or genuine fox in the hen house ?

Today I had the misfortune of being called out to help a customer fix a mower I have never worked on before.

Now I must confess that I did not go out with the open & objective mind that I should have when looking at a new piece of equipment.

Firstly the "I can't get the parts I have bought to fit " syndrome usually ends up in tears & me looking either uncooperative or greedy when I try to recover th actual time spent in rectifying the owners "fixes"

And secondly because I have suffered a few previous encounters with the same makers cheap & nasty Honda Self propelled look alikes .

Previously the original seller did not want to know about it & referred me to the previous repairer who also was not interested in supplying parts and was in fact unable to even find the correct part given the model & serial numbers.

They eventually directed me to the current importers who wanted to see the part so they could match it. Not the sort of thing that creates great faith in the brand.

Any way, this is what I was confronted with on a machine ( 60" Cobra ) that has done 56 hours, I repeat this is a supposed commercial mower with 56 hours on the clock over the 16 months the owner has had the machine.

Boss.jpgFlange.jpgBoth.jpg

The front spindle pulley had failed by the boss detatching from the pulley flange.

If you look closely at the first picture you will note that it is a TIG weld with a massive under cut.

This picture has the boss upside down so it would not be visible when inspecting the machine without using a mirror.

Compare that weld to the one in the second picture where you can see the nice ( and it is good even if the end pool was not properly filled ) fillet on the top of the pulley where it is visible to the mug purchaser.

All 3 pulleys were welded exactly the same as was the replacement. How much is 6" of filler rod worth and if that is what the pulleys are like I can only imagine what the welds are like under and inside where they can not be seen without partial disassembly.

I could not get a good picture with the I phone but the flange of the pulley looks very thin. Thinner than any commercial mower spindle pulley I have ever come across and I would guess it is just under the minimum thickness required for a pulley of this size ( about 9" ) should it have been made from good quality USA or Aust steel but I suspect it was fabricated from slightly under specification Chineese pretend steel.

Bad thing is the fracture surface was too damaged for any proper determination ( I used to be a metallurgist ) but there was no apparent necking and the fracture face was just far enough away to almost rule out a transitional failure at the tip of the heat affected zone of the weld unless it was welded in an open yard in sub zero temperatures without any pre heat.

The owner could not remove the boss from the spindle shaft and I had to pop a bearing separator under it and apply way too much force to get it off suggesting it was a either a light press fit or poor machining tolerances .

The spindle is mounted from the underside of the deck thus the pulley has to be fitted in situ so it will be interesting to have a look at the spindle bearings.

The World agent tod him to "remove the pin & it will come off easily " which is interesting because there is no pin and the key is not accessible with the boss on the shaft.

The owner thinks he got a steal particularly as the replacement spindle ( warrantee was not honoured ) only cost him $ 27.00 where as the pulley for his old Dane was $ 75 and his neighbour paid $ 65 for spindle pulleys on the Dixie.

the good thing is I can see me making a LOT of money out of this machine because the other two spindle pulleys will most likely suffer the same fate in the near future.

In 56 hours the plstic thumb screw heads had detached from the spindle cover screws so it will be a spanner job to refit the belt every time it jumps off.

Now according to the bumph on the Aust web site If you fell like a good laugh, read it

This machine is fitted with a REAL Kawakasi V twin but a cursory glance noticed a Stens filter was fitted which has not been changed since new, SO Kawakasi is apparently suplying new motors with afermarket Stens oil filters fitted now days , never seen that before, but I could be wrong, however the retail price of all the supposed brand name components adds up to nearly 1/2 the retail cost of the machine so some thing there smells a bit funny. particularly as there is no Hydro Gear identity tags to be seen any where on the machine & the last time I fitted a repacement Hydro gear pump it came with 5 tags and instructions where to put them.

Since my last encounter with WORLD LAWN Rubbish the USA agent has put up a really good web site. Seems there s a lot more money available for web presence than there is for QC. Home - Worldlawn Power Equipment, Inc.Worldlawn Power Equipment, Inc.

The Australian distributor has done the usual Aussie thing, a slick looking web site with no actual content. The Truth About The Mower Industry: Worldlawn Australia

gravely pro turn 148 or toro zmaster 2000

So now that I've bought my new trailer I'm saving for a new mower. I should be able to get one in about 5 months. I keep going back and forth from the zmaster 2000 that I can get for 7000 before tax or the pro turn 148 for 7500 before tax. The guy I used to work for had the pro turn and I loved it which is why I'm leaning towards it for an extra 500 bucks. But user Ric has the zmaster and he loves it. And it looks like it's built very well. So what do yall think? And I plan on selling my gravely zt xl right before my purchase. If I sell it with roughly 120 hrs do you think I'll be able to get atleast 3000 for it?

Bent Exhaust Valve Pushrod

I have a cyclone rake leaf vacuum with a 9 hp B&S Vanguard engine that suddenly stopped running and then would not turn over using the pull cord. I noticed it had been backfiring through the muffler when starting or when the throttle was reduced so I suspected the values needed adjustment. But when I pulled off the cover plate I noticed that the exhaust valve pushrod was separated from the rocker arm and upon further inspection I found that the pushrod was slightly bent. Also, using a magnet wand tool found a small amount of very fine metal shavings down near the bottom of the pushrod coupling on the cam. Before I install the new pushrod, has anyone had a similar experience? I am wondering if this was just a loose valve problem or I need to look at the cam or compression release.

What have you done to your LB lately?

Just wanted to see if I could start a thread for us to post our current progress on our projects. I really like reading about what others are currently doing to their lawn boys. It's been kinda quiet on here lately and I know some of us would love to hear what progress others are making.

Currently I'm working on my scrap yard find 8243AE. Just got the correct replacement coil today and it's getting great spark. Now I just gotta put my rebuilt carb back on with my new air filer and see if the old boy will fire up. Probably will continue work on it on Wednesday.

Kawasaki KAI FJ180V parts list

I have a John Deere TS Gator that is in need of a new engine. Original is a Kawasaki FE350D CS22. Don't believe they make it anymore and was wondering if there is another that will work.

governor issue?

After a long day of rough cutting, my old Craftsman 19hp I/C gold twin lawn tractor made a "freaky" noise and then started "screaming" with the engine at beyond full blast. I tried to lower the throttle, and idle the engine, but nothing worked. After turning it off, I was able to restart, but it still screams and feels like it is going to blow apart. Now, it turns over, but doesn't start. Probably not a good idea to restart it anyway if is what I think it may be (based on very limited knowledge, a bit of common sense, and a bit of research). Does this sound like a governor gear inside the engine coming apart? If so, what kind of repair bill am I looking at? The mower has/had great power, but it was/is missing a gear. Still, was doing a good job cutting my rough property which is a bit over an acre. What other issues could this be if not a governor?

I appreciate everyone's help. I basically need help deciding if this is fixable, or if I am looking at a new mower. Thanks.

Pressure washer motor on a mower

I'm want to replace my old B&S lawn mower motor with a Honda GCV160 that I have acquired. The Honda is from a pressure washer so I am trying to figure out what parts I will need. I know I will need a flywheel brake. Second issue is how to mount the blade. The shaft is keyed, there is no threaded hole in it. I'm thinking I can use some kind of blade adapter and drill and tap the shaft to mount the blade/adapter. Anyone know if this can work and what parts I would need? Thanks.

Price Check 1979-1983 Snapper 30" RER

Hey guys. I have a 1979-1983(I am not exactly sure what year yet) Snapper rer mower with a 30" deck that was given to me. I really want to fully restore the mower to original status. I would like to sell it, though, when I get done. Do you guys think I could sell it, and if I do, how much do you think I could get. Thanks!

I have a craftsman that wont move

I have a craftsman 6 speed riding mower with a kohler pro 22 v twin motor. I was able to get it started today (had to clean carburator) i drove it approximately 200 yds to my grass area to begin cutting like i always do, put clutch in engaged blades lowered blades and when i let clutch go it wouldnt move in any gear! I tried everything to no avail even the range shift lever? I cant believe that the transmission or clutch went out on me after it was moving fine in all gears, but i fear the worse.

14 HP Vanguard Turning Only 60 Degrees

Hello All,

I'm helping out a family friend by working on his Cushman Hawk utility vehicle. It has 14 HP Vanguard V-twin OHV. The original issue was the teeth on the starter were ground off to the point of no engagement. Apparently you can remove the starter while in the vehicle, however, I opted to pull the engine since there were other things to be looked at and it wasn't much of a hassle. I eventually found the right starter gear, installed it to the starter and reinstalled the starter. While I had the engine out, I changed the spark plugs and the spark plug boots on the coils. I adjusted both coil air gaps and all 4 valves. I also changed the oil and filter. After having an issue finding the starter pinion gear with the right number of teeth, I tested out the starter while on the engine to make sure the new gear would turn the engine over fine. With no fuel or spark, obviously the engine didn't start but I let it turn over for about 3 seconds. All was well. Starter engaged and disengaged fine. I put everything back together and put the engine back in the vehicle. As I went to install the drive pulley back onto the crankshaft I had to turn the crankshaft a bit to get everything lined up. I notice the crank would only turn about 60 degrees total. When it came to a stop it was quite abrupt, not like the engine was just building compression. After checking all the clearances of moving parts and removing the coils to make sure they weren't contacting the flywheel, I removed the engine once again to see if I could get a better look. This is the point I'm at now. I can't find a thing wrong. It almost sounds internal to the engine when it makes contact with whatever it is. I pulled the valve covers to double check the valves and also removed the spark plugs. It's crazy because just yesterday the engine turned over without issue. The vehicle gets driven mostly on gravel and there was a fair amount of gravels around the engine. I thought maybe one of those got lodged behind the flywheel but I can't see anything or hear it rolling around. I gave the engine a good shake while on the hoist hoping to dislodge something but no dice. The point at which it stops turning is just about where the flywheel magnet passes each coil. It will only move back and forth between those two points. I'm thinking of pulling the flywheel next, but I was hoping someone had another idea. Anyone had this happen?

Thanks,

Seth

Engine What's so special about a small engine OIL filter?

I have a Scag with the 24 HP Honda engine. I was comparing the oil filter with one from a Saturn car. They look and fit identically.

The original Honda oil filter is a FPE15-10N-18. Is the automotive PH2835 or the QS3614 that much different inside? Some web sites call this FPE15 a hydraulic filter, but that's what my Scag book calls for along with a list of other filters. Flow rate, pressure bypass, anyone know for sure?

safety switch ohms out, but bad voltage readings

People,

continuing with my no start problem, I narrowwed it down to the safety switch- the one immediately below the big blade control lever (not the clutch one). When out, the switch ohms out at about 0.7 ohms on each of the 2 blade terminals (one with button depressed, and the other 2 terminals with button relaxed). When multimeter is on the BEEP mode with no ohms measured I do get the BEEP.

But when I snap back on the switch to the wire harness cluster, and depress the button by hand whilst measuring voltage to orange/white wire going to the solenoid, erratic voltage (between 7-9 volts). Continuity on thet O/W wire is good. Why do I get these low voltage results when the switch ohmed out?

Big thanks, people.

A brutally honest review of my Raptor

I purchased a 42" Raptor last spring for $2500 with a military discount. I mowed a 1/2 acre of flat land for about 5 months and it was flawless. I used to own the 1/2 acre next to me as well, but sold it a few years back. The new owner defaulted and let it go. It was cut by the county 2 times a year after it was about 2 feet tall. I decided to attack it with my Raptor in between county cuttings. The 42" is NOT meant to cut 2 foot weeds! The chute clogged with wet, tall weeds. No surprise there. Now the bad part, the land was full of ruts, ditches, bumps, hills, etc.. I was bounced around like a bull rider. Still no problem for a good while, but at the very end of the season I noticed one of the EZTs was leaking a little fluid. I took it back to the dealer and they determined a seal went bad. Hustler replaced the entire hydro under warranty as expected. 2 things I learned, Hustler has great CS & don't push a mower beyond what it is intended for. Should a seal blow? Might happen on any of the hydros, but next year I won't be cutting that crappy land....

echo pb200 blower slowly descreases idle speed and then dies after about 10 seconds

Ok so I have an echo pb200 that I believe is a 2005 model. Ok so at first I thought the idle speed was too low, but that did work. Basically what happens is that you can run it at full throttle and it will go back to an idle and run at an idle fine for about 15 seconds, but it slowly decreases in speed until it stalls after that. Also if you try to give it more throttle after it gets to the point where it's idling so slow that it's barely running it just boggs down and won't really want to go back to full throttle. Then most of the time if you let it stall it won't want to restart. Any ideas? I'm thinking it just needs a carb rebuild since it is 10 years old. It does need the primer bulb replaced cause it's rotten and about to leak. Not sure if that will cause this problem. Any ideas?

JS63 Motor replacement

I have a JS63 that I really liked and slightly hit a water meter and now it is knocking and shaking when restarted, the shaft does not look bent and when I take the blade off it does the same thing.

I am thinking of replacing the engine, would like to know if the process is difficult, any tips on the process I have located a new engine for $145 so I think it would be worth it because the rest of the mower is in good shape. I am fairly mechanically inclined but dont want to bite off more than I can chew.

Victa Mowers (It's Summer Down Under!)

Since there's no forum for the brand I thought I'd start a thread about a great Australian mower: Victa. They continue to make two-cycle mowers -- which is interesting to me as a two-stroke hobbyist.

Unsurprisingly, their older models are the most interesting. Here's a 1968 model. I like the idea of getting the air intake away from ground level.

Oil Change Mess on 16HP Toro motor on ss3200

Changing the engine oil on my 2013 ss3200 mower with the Toro 16HP motor is the most messy task I've ever encountered with any lawn mower. The provided plastic tube to put on the drain outlet doesn't work because it crimps when bent. Usually no matter how I do the job it winds up being one total mess with oil everywhere. I even created channels for the oil to follow with caulking but still runs everywhere. Elevating the front of the mower ensures that some of the old oil won't drain out. If anyone has come up with a solution I'd love to know it. The dealer said "about have to deal with it"? Thanks

HS 40 New Issues Valve guides?

It's me again.

OK after many hours and mountains of frustration, I have good consistent spark now. Turns out the after market coils are not working very well in this engine. So i reused the original coil. I heat shrunk the coil wire.

I have fuel and spark but no start. I started to investigate the intake valve so see if it's stuck open. I poked through the plug hole with a small screw driver. It is not open. But it wiggles around all over the place when it's open. I'll have to pull the head and side cover off now.

Before I tear into this new problem, I wanted to know a few things. I doubt the valve rocking around is normal. I'm thinking the spring is off and it may need a new valve guide. I thought I read someplace they were replaceable. Anybody have any experience with this?

Rivits, did you say the intake valve is open twice? This one opens twice in the same cycle. The second stroke opens slightly, shorter duration than the intake stroke

Any input on this would be appreciated

Thanks in advance (Again)

Merry Christmas

old stihl fs80 primer screw on primer bulb housing

i have a old stihl fs80 weed eater/brush-cutter that belonged to my grandpa. it hasn't been run in about 10 years. i decided to get it running again i replaced all the fuel lines new spark plug and cleaned the carb. that all went fine but the primer bulb has given me a fit. its a white plastic screw on type. ive never seen one before. i had to take it off with channelocks and in the process i broke it. if i had i pic of it i would post it. i have not been able to fine one. maybe it has a special name idk. but its like a coke bottle lid size the a whole in the top for the primer bulb and it just screws on to the pick up on the fuel line. any help on what this is called or where i could find one online would be greatly appreciated.

Comparison Walker best w/ 19,23,25(efi) engine?

Ok guys need your help. I'm looking to buy a new Walker to cut 15-20 neighborhood yards per week. I have read a lot about the difference between the 3 engine options that I am considering (19,23,25). The dealership says they mostly sell the 23 hp cause of price and reliability.. Online I have read a number of post where guys swear by the 20hp (which I think is now rated 19hp). Reason being the long life of the engine and some possible design reasons that aide in that. I was able to demo a 25hp and loved it but everyone has me scared of engine problem and price to change out the engine one day.

So figured I would start my own post and ask.... Which engine do you think is the best for a 42" Walker?

Hello. New Guy here. We have an X340 that is in very good shape. It's been sitting for a while. This morning it started up pretty quickly but died as soon as I released the clutch/brake pedal. I let it warm up for quite a while but it kept stalling. (This is with me sitting in the seat.) I reached underneath and manually pushed in the clutch/Brake plunger switch. The tractor started fine but as soon as I released that switch, it died.

Seems to me that the switch must be bad. Can it be that easy? Is there something else I should look for?

Thanks!

Synthetic oil in a mower?

As long as the weight is correct, can a synthetic oil be used in a mower and snow blower engine?

I have cases of Rotella T6 diesel diesel oil. 10W-30

My Mower is a Honda, my blower is a 13 HP Tecumseh

Ok...who has a Ybravo 25 and how did it do this season?

Been running two Honda Commercial 21's for the past few years with 2 more of the HRR thumbdrives in addition to my 2 scag 48 Hydros, Deere 445 Z and 36 Scag. I have 74 lawns, with about half being in a retirement community where alot of customers bitch about the large machines (hence the 21 Hondas). Been looking at the Exmark and Toro commercial 30's to silence the bitching...my buddy owns a shop where I spin wrenches in the winter with him and he's getting the only YBravo distributorship within 200 miles. Anyway he saw the YBravos at a dealer show and raves about them. I can get a hell of a deal on 1 or 2 of them but I need to know how people who have had them for awhile like them and how they have held up. The engines are one thing...I have alot of experience with Honda and lets face it engines are usually the most dependable part of a mower, but I want to know about the usual things that go after a few seasons and what would you change on the unit. We split things up between mulching and bagging and only discharge on the commercial properties so it has to mulch well. I don't mind spending money on quality products, but I really hate wasting it on junk. Thanks and think snow!

Engine John Deere 320, possible stator is bad?

I bought a 1992 John deere 320, ignition switch was out, so I replaced that, got it running, have continuous battery light on, reading 12.63 volts on battery, same while running, I disconnected harness from regulator, battery light goes out, tested voltage through harness where it connects to regulator, it reads the same. can anyone give me any input on this?

Ms 150TC

Second time I ran my New lightweight, top handle trim saw, the flywheel key sheared. Discovered the retaining nut was finger tight. Took it to the shop and another one with the same condition was there. Unsure if the problem is improper torquing of the retaining nut or defective shear key on flywheel. Anyone else have same problem?

PS. Love this little saw for trimming after felling.

TB575EC trimmer clutch removal

I have a String Trimmer mower that needs a new starter assembly because the spring fails.

To get to it I need to remove the clutch from the crank shaft.

How is it fixed? Or better how does it come of?

applied.

I tapped already on the crankshaft and it didn't come loose. Thanks

Carb linkage

I had to rebuild a 13 hp Kohler engine on an STX38 John Deere. I had taken pictures during breakdown but somehow deleted the picture of the carb linkage before I removed the carb. I can start the engine now in the closed choke position but when I open the choke into the run/idle position I have to move the lever to the low idle position or the engine bogs down. When I try to idle the engine up to full throttle/operating speed it bogs down. Before I start to explore whether I have a carb issue I want to make sure the linkages are set right. I cannot find a linkage diagram anywhere. Can anyone help? I've attached photos of how the linkages are currently positioned.

The engine is a CV13S-21509

Afterthought: This is the same engine I posted other questions about. One of the two throttle plate screws had come loose and gotten sucked into and past the intake valve and was stamped into the cylinder head cover. As I was looking at the photos I just took and about to upload, I'm wondering if I have the throttle plate positioned correctly. Seems like the throttle plate screws should be visible. I know I had taken the throttle plate off, of course I thought I had it back on correctly.

This Followed Me Home Today

Saw this on CL and couldn't resist. Doesn't run and will need some work. It has good compression and looks to be in great overall condition. Just look at how good the paint, shroud and the decals are. It may need a coil and the usual other things like seals and air cleaner and the like. This thing should clean up nice and run good. I'll probably wait until spring to really dig into it. My sickness for old Lawn Boys is looking to be incurable.

Redmax EBZ-8001 SN (6100XXXX) Only runs on starter fluid

I am trying to troubleshoot an issue that has been going on for a few months now. Just to point out a few items that have already been addressed:

1. New carb has been installed (brand new and complete not rebuilt)

2. New Muffler has been installed

3. All gaskets haev been replaced

4. New Fuel Filter and Fuel Lines

5. New Spark Plug

6. New Piston and Piston rings

7. Exhaust port has been cleaned

Has strong compression. Has strong spark. Will only run if I spray a little amount of starter fluid into the intake port or the spark plug port. Once the fluid burns up it will not run any longer. If I remove the spark plug I do not see or smell the gas mixture coming out of the spark plug. The carb has gas and can prime well. I revisited the piston and removed the intake manifold to get a look at the piston as it moves up and down in the cylinder case and I noticed that on the intake side the piston rings never get below the top of the intake port. I am not sure if that is the normal operation. I suspect that there is something wrong with this operation and that the gax is never getting pulled into the chamber hence the reason why no mixture comes out of the spark port and why the engine will not run on anything other than starter fluid. Does anyone have a similar experience or any thoughts or direction in which I can go? Thanks in advance for the help.

confused about starter switch

People,

I ohmed out my starter switch and concluded its no good (engine no start, switch no continuity), and my manual shows 2 kinds- the 725-1396 and 725-0267. Its aan MTD and the engine IS Tecumseh, but it also says "OHV 13HP". So my manual lists 2 kinds- one for the tecumseh and the other for the OHV 660-679, but BOTH tecumseh AND OHV are stamped on my engine.

In other words, why do they list a different switch for the OHV and tecumseh if my engine says tecuimseh OHV?? Man, confuuuuuusing!

Anyway, people, if yous can help, greatly appreciate it!! (heres some addl info which might help: Engine model: OHV 130 206820b, Family TTP358UIG 2RA, D.O.M. 8036D, displacement 358)

thanks.

MS-310 Chain Lube Leaking----Need HELP!

I'm a BRAND NEW Newbie. I don't normally join forums; but I'm desperate for an answer/help with my Stihl Chainsaw Model MS-310. I was born & raised in the SE Woods of Mississippi; but I joined the Navy and after my Tour was up, moved to the Great Northwest to live, hunt, & WORK. After 20 years of cutting Firewood with a Husky Chainsaw, I moved back Way Down South and was advised to purchase a REAL chainsaw....a STIHL. I was further advised that in order to enjoy trouble free continuous use of my Stihl, I should take it to a Stihl Authorized Dealer and have it annually serviced. I will honestly admit, I have a problem letting other folks work on any of my equipment; but upon the insistence of my oldest son, I relented this year (he volunteered to pay). I just started to cut some additional firewood for our Southern MS winter needs and discovered that the Chain is not getting any lubrication. Upon further detailed troubleshooting/investigation, I discovered all my Chain Lube Oil was coming out the front of my Stihl. (Lots of oil) As most of you longtime Stihl Owners know, Stihl is "Stingy" with the Maintenance info they make available! I have attached a pic of the hole where the Chain Lube is pouring out of.

I said all the above to ask this; "Can anyone please advise if there is something supposed to be in this hole? and if so, can you tell me what the part # is?"

Very Respectfully,

The NEW Newbie

What to look for when my Gravely HVZ 2350 won't start

It seems every time I go to start my mower, there is a dead spot in the starter. It will turn over once or twice then I have to turn the key off and try again. It seems to work better when the battery is charged, but even then it happens occasionally. The last time i used it before winter, it won't even turn over at all, so am I looking at a bad starter, solenoid, safety switch or what? Any help to put me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. At the moment the battery is fully charged. I took the cover off the engine and the starter gear is up, engaged on the motor ring gear.

Transaxle fluid? Scotts S1642

Okay, so I finally figured out the model # of my lawn tractor and now I'm curious what kind of fluid I need to use in the transaxle? There's nothing in my manual about transaxle service/fluid replacement because I'm sure the good engineers at Scotts/John Deere assumed the transaxle would never be serviced by the owner. No, I'm certain they had faith that nobody would ever try to service their own transaxle and that they would run off to the local JD service center for such a complicated procedure.

Since I'm going to be pushing snow with it, I'm curious what kind of fluid I should use? Even if I weren't planning on pushing snow, I'd still want to do this b/c it's a whiny lil' bastard and is probably due for a fluid change just because it needs it.

I'm also thinking about mixing in an additive, but I've seen some guys on here talk that regular engine oil is used as the transaxle fluid, so before I make that decision, I need to know what I (most likely) have in there. I very much doubt that it's been serviced at all since its purchase, but I don't know anything about the original owner and/or if they took reasonable care of it.

Thanks.

5hp tecumseh horizontal. on John deere snow blower 826 model

hello everybody, I am new to the forum as of today. I am a full-time mechanic and I work on heavy equipment daily. So I understand the basics, I am having a frustrating issue with my snow blower. Last season it was very hard to start and eventually became a no start condition. Whenever i pull the cord it backfires out of the exhaust, even when using starting fluid it will not attempt to start, it just backfires from the exhaust. It is getting spark and obviously getting fuel viA starting fluid, I also replaced the carburetor last season with a brand new one. I have removed the flywheel to check the keyway. Everything looks great, I thought maybe I had a stuck valve so I pulled the jug cover off and both valves are closed and good. They will hold some WD 40 for a good half hour or more without leaking.head gasket also looks good.as of now I am completely stuck with this thing. I do not see anything wrong. It is a good old snow blower, very heavy duty all metal with tire chains, I hate to just trash it. Hopefully someone can help me out here thanks guys

Intro

Hi to everyone and thanks for accepting me as a new member. Sorry, I didn't post in a timely manner. Been sick the last few days.

At this time, I have a Craftsman riding lawn mower. It is 12 years old. Searching for a good replacement. So for I've looked at Gravely, Ariens, Cub Cadet 42", etc.

Need to find if any of are good at for residential mulching particularly the zero turn.

5hp Tecumseh coil??

I am not getting spark on this 5hp, took off the flywheel and it is an old point coil. I cleaned and readjusted the points to .020 and it fired but would not run. I checked the spark again and no spark. I have not been able to find a replacement for this or can I just replace the points and condensor or is there a newer type coil that would work on this motor Model HS50-67175C It is on a snowblower.

JD D110 kills when drive engaged.

I have a D110 that I just installed a new snow blower on. I hooked up everything correctly according to the instructions...except the tension spring to drive the blower. I hooked it up so the blower was engaged before starting. Needless to say it was hard to get started. I hooked up the 40 amp charger and it wouldn't start. I switched to the 200amp position and it finally started. After getting it started, I realized the blower was engaged, then shut off the machine, fixed the spring. Machine starts right away now. Only problem is, as long as I have the clutch pushed in or locked, it stays running. If I let the clutch out or engage the blower, it dies right away. I brought the auto shutoff seat switch and the relay to the dealership (thinking I shorted something out starting it at 200 amps) and both checked out ok. I jumped the override button on the dash - still dies. I disengaged the snow blower completely - no change. What could the problem be?

Relay checked good.

Seat switch, clutch switch, forward/reverse switch and utility engage switch all test ok. Is there a computer module or something that went bad?

Crankcase ventilation

Is there a crankcase vent valve on Kohler CH20 engine. Main seal blew out. Mechanic said cylinder walls were scored. Replaced engine as labour to repair would equal replacement costs. I do regular oil changes but a friend said perhaps it blew the seal due to build up of pressure. Used to change pcv valve on my vehicles? Just wondering.

Hello All!

I have a craftsman small engine model number 580.327140 that needs a new valve spring retainer (keyhole type) Where can I order this?

CV740 Shearing Flywheel Keys???

I Have a Kohler CV740 And it keeps shearing the flywheel key it will start and run fine for about 2- 3 uses after that it just turns but wont fire since the key has broken I have changed key with the correct size stated by kohler and even had machine shop make a "stronger key" Still broke... HELP! I am getting frustrated.

Craftsman (MTD) Snowblower Carburetor Problems

At least I think it's a carburetor problem. First things first. Hello all. I'm new here. I don't know why I'm new here. I should have joined long ago as much as I find myself working on all of my equipment. I have perused this website before while searching for answers to my problems, but only joined now. I'm glad I did. I hope to learn some more in my time here and help out others as I can.

I have a Craftsman 2-stage snowblower with 5.5 HP Tecumseh engine. The engine model is LH195SP, Spec 67517D. This thing has never run right since I got it. Last year, at the beginning of the winter, during the first big snow, it died on me. I couldn't get it running and it got really cold outside, and we were getting a LOT of snow, and with all of the other things I had to do, I couldn't find enough time to try and fix it. So, I shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled. All winter long. This year I swore I was going to try and get it running before the snow started falling. We've been lucky here, so far, as far as the snow is concerned, but I still haven't got it running right.

Before it died, I always had to run it with the choke partially on. This year I cleaned the tank out and cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor (non-adjustable, EPA compliant). The carb "looked" pretty clean before I cleaned it. Anyways, after messing with it for a couple weeks, taking the carb off and re-cleaning multiple times, I finally gave up on it. A couple times it gave a few "putters" where it attempted to start, but it never did. I used new gas and a new spark plug, even though the old plug was still fine. I checked for spark and it is good. It would just not start.

After all this I bought a new carburetor. I bought the "older" version of the EPA carb that came with the snowblower. The one I bought has the adjustable main jet and the adjustable idle mixture screw. I installed the new carb and after a few pulls, she started right up. To me, that makes it obvious that there was something wrong with the old carb, whether it was plugged-up passageways or whatnot.

After some adjusting, I got it to run "OK" at full throttle. It's not perfect. There's a little "popping" going on. The thing is I cannot get it to idle. When I move the throttle lever down, the RPMs drop and eventually it dies, even if I try and partially apply the choke. I preset the carb main at 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated and the idle mixture screw at about 1 turn out from lightly seated.

I have good function from the main jet and the engine responds well to either leaning or enriching. HOWEVER, the idle mixture screw seems to do nothing. As a matter of fact, the engine will keep running even if I screw the mixture screw all the way in. I understand that the idle circuit doesn't even come into play until the RPMs reach a certain level.

The OEM EPA non-adjustable carb was a 640084B. The new carb is a 632107A, which is supposed to be the equivalent of the 640084B carb, but with adjustable main and idle mixture screws. As I said, it fired up fairly easily with the new carb and wouldn't even start with the old one.

I'm using new fresh gas, although it is E10. There is no E0 available in my area.

Th bad thing I did late this summer when I started working on this snowblower was mess with the governor. I don't know why I did, but I did. The thing about this governor is that the shaft barely turns. I checked it unhooked from the carb and the shaft will maybe rotate 5 degrees. I was watching a video on YouTube where a guy was showing about adjusting governors and he was showing the governor shaft movement on his Tecumseh motor (5 HP) and it was able to rotate WAY more than mine, more like 20 or 25 degrees I estimate. I don't know if this has anything to do with my non-idle condition or not. This snowblower has had very little use. I haven't ruled out any valve issues. When I did get it running with the new carb, I was able to rule out a bad gas cap, since it ran at high (not excessive) RPMs for at least 20 minutes until I shut it down.

Sorry for this long post but I'm out of ideas and would greatly appreciate any input. If any other info is needed please ask. Thanks

K301 Backfires and more

Hi all, I have a K301 12hp that I bought 4 years. The guy I got it from said it was a shortblock from Kohler. It ran great for 3 years until it threw a rod. I took it apart and found that when the conecting rod broke it also broke off one of the wieghts on the cam. I found a used cam with the exact numbers on it and I got a used crank and connecting rod. I put it back together and it started right up but backfires when going from full throttle to idle. I put a new carb on but no change. I also noticed now at full throttle it looks like a steady flame comming out of the muffler. This is my first time working on a small engine. I do have the manual for K series engines. Do I have somethine wrong?

HS40 No Spark Kicken my butt

Hi all. I'm new to the forum.

Just a slight bit of history, I am usually the one answering these questions! I am well known in the old Mopar and diesel areas. So I have a pretty good idea what's going on. Supposed to anyway. I'm above average with mechanics, I do my own engines and transmissions, brakes, front ends, on and on.

I have a 40 year old 3KW generator which has a Tecumseh HS40 power plant. It was my Dads so it's kind of precious to me. It's serviced us well over the years, but has been replaced with larger units. I keep it around for small emergencies and want to use it on my car trailer. Several years ago it stopped running and has been dormant since. It's kicking my butt.

I have no spark. I replaced the coil and condenser, cleaned the points up real good. I will replace them when I get the new ones. In the mean time I wanted to see if the spark issue was fixed. Nope! I've checked the air gap on the magnets, points are set at .020, (Several times), new plug and made sure the cam on the crank is opening and closing the points. I re-lubed the cam as well. I tested both the old and new condensers and they seem to test out fine. There are no faults in the wiring (Shorts). If I put a voltmeter on the plug wire, it will spike the meter. But still no spark. I even put an air ratchet on the flywheel and tried it. I also go brave and held the plug wire. Still nothing. There's no kill switch so that's out.

Any ideas? I'm too invested it to quit now.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

TORO zero turn

Hello,

New to this sight. i would like to rebuild my mower deck this winter.

Rear wheels won't roll freely

I have a snapper FRP216012 that wont roll freely. I picked it up for $30 because it wouldn't stay running... I think I have that problem almost fixed, and then the wheels locked up on me when I was rolling it to the front yard. If I lift the mower up, they will spin in opposite directions freely. I can't see any binding, but the gear case does look a little low on grease... any ideas? Also, it seems to run fine if I start it with the gas cap unscrewed slightly, so I replaced the cap. New cap, same problem. I'm wondering if a stuck float?

Engine Craftsman 917, "eats" fuel pumps. Is that a head gasket problem?

I have this B&S DOHC 18.5 hp on a Craftsman DYT 4000. It's "eating" fuel pumps. I replace them and they're gone, sometimes in 2 laps around the yard. I read on another forum that a bad head gasket could do this, because it leaks into the crankcase, which over-pressurizes the crankcase, thereby over-pressurizing the pulse tube, which pops the diaphragm in the fuel pump. Sounds plausible to me, but thought I'd run it by some others before I tear into it. Could anything else be killing these fuel pumps so quickly? BTW, it runs fine, but has backfired once. Doesn't seem to smoke or burn oil. Oil level is good.

Huffy Lawn Mower?

Hi all, I hope you can help. I recently acquired a 1962 Huffington Corp. 24" Cut Lawn Mower and I was wondering if anyone has any pictures of one of these in their original condition/ Color scheme. I am going to do a full Resto on it and I was needing to see the original paint scheme. Also, I need to see what the original brake mechanism looked like since this one is missing it's. Thank you

Is this snow blower ruined?

I have reason to believe that this snow blower Troybuilt Storm 2410 never had end of season maintenance performed on it, and was likely stored with gas and oil left in the unit for 2 seasons now. I am worried about contaminated gas or oil in the engine and am scared to start it... is there anything I can do? I am not an engine person at all, so I am trying to find out what my options are. Does this need to go to a small engine repair shop, or am I over-reacting?

Thanks

new enclosed trailer.

So I bought a new enclosed trailer and I wanted to make my own racks for it. For the trimmers. Do most people use small screws thru the studs to hold up a rack or what?

Where can I find parts for my Toro S200 snowthrower?

I have a Toro S200 snowthrower with a Tecumseh AH520 engine. I am trying to rebuild the carburetor, but I don't know where to find parts. Yes, I can get a carburetor rebuild kit on eBay, but the kits don't have the gaskets that I would assume I'll need. In my pics, I have indicated the rubber gaskets that I assume I should replace: there are (4). I've never rebuilt a carburetor, but I don't think I can properly clean it if I don't replace these gaskets in addition to the diaphram and whatever comes in the carburetor rebuild it kit....can I? Thanks for any help. Todd20141211 041.jpg20141211 043.jpg20141211 044.jpg

Exmark Metro Dies When Blades Are Engaged

I have an Exmark Metro with the Kawasaki FB460V engine. I have had it for several years and it has given me relatively little trouble - until now.

I was planning to do a final Fall cleanup last week. I had a difficult time staring the engine (I lost count of how many times I had to pull the cord). It finally did start and I let it run for a minute or so.

Once it sounded okay, I engaged the blades. At that point, the engine died. I restarted it and let it run a while longer before I tried to engage the blades. It made no difference - the engine died as soon as I engaged the blades. I repeated this one more time and then gave up.

Any advice on identifying and correcting this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

(I already posted this in the Exmark forum, but wanted to post in the general forum as well)

Flywheel magnet keeps rusting?

What can I put on the magnet to stop it from rusting, and still allow the motor to start? I have to clean the magnet every time I attempt to start the mower and its getting to be a real pain in the neck.

A new member of my Li-Ion battery cordless lawn mower family

I picked up this lawn mower recently on Amazon for $199.99. It's sold by a company named Greyson Products that apparently is the reincarnation of Turbo Garden, which disappeared some time ago after promising to introduce some Li-Ion battery powered lawn mowers that never materialized. This mower has a 15" blade with an all plastic deck, and is supplied with a single 40 volt 5 Ah battery. There is also a larger model that sells for $299.99 with a 19" blade and a metal deck that is supplied with two batteries. Both mowers claim to have brushless motors.

The mower batteries are made by LG Chem, which is a reputable manufacturer of Li-Ion batteries based in Korea. It's anybody's guess where the lawn mower and battery charger are made, since there are no labels or markings whatsoever on any of the parts to indicate country of manufacture. There are just labels with the letters "GP", which presumably stand for Greysen Products.

The product arrived in a plain brown box and the only documentation is a double sided printed sheet and two single sided addenda. Although the product description says it includes a "mulcher", this is incorrect, since there is no mulch plug and what is referred to as a mulcher is simply the rear door that covers the discharge port into the grass box and that has a gap at the bottom to redirect the clippings into the ground. So, what we have here is a mower that can bag or rear discharge the clippings, but definitely not a mulcher.

The grass box is made entirely of rigid plastic and arrived disassembled in 3 pieces, 2 bottom halves split vertically down the middle that snap together, and a third top piece with tabs that are snapped into slots in the bottom section that was a total bear to assemble. It was like playing whack-a-mole, where I'd get one set of tabs lined up and another set would pop out of place. After a 20 minute struggle, I managed to get the danged thing assembled, but not before one of the tabs at the front had slipped out of its slot and broken off when it got bent over. Once assembled it can't be disassembled, so I threw out the box, since even if I wanted to return it, a much larger box would be needed and the cost of shipping would be astronomical.

I charged the battery for about one hour until the four green lights on the battery were lit and started up the mower to test it out on my back yard. I hadn't gone more than 50 feet before both rear wheels fell off. At first I thought that maybe the wheels had not been properly bolted to the axles, but upon closer inspection it became apparent that the wheels themselves had fallen apart. The wheels consist of two plastic pieces with an inner hub that is attached to the axle and an outer part press fit on the hub that had separated. I attempted in vain to glue them back together with contact cement and Super Glue, and finally settled on a combination of fender washers and smaller nut washers to secure the wheels although they are now very sloppy and the left wheel sags inward to the point of rubbing lightly on a plastic strut that is part of the wheel height mechanism.

On my second outing the mower developed an intermittent shutdown problem, where it would suddenly shut down for no reason and then restart after about a second delay. One time it shut down completely with the same audible and tactile click that occurs when the bail bar is released, and it would not restart for a few minutes. I then tightened all the screws that hold the two halves of the start switch / bail housing together, and the problem has not recurred since then so perhaps it's just a loose connection or a flaky switch.

I've been using this mower as a leaf vacuum, and in this capacity it does a great job. It completely fills the box, which has a full indicator flap and a comfortable handle. The box is also very easy to empty, since the front opening is as just as large as the rear of the box. The mower also has an incredibly low minimum heat setting of about 3/4", which makes it a great hard surface vacuum.

The mower weighs under 30 lbs w/o the grass box installed, and the box adds another 3.8 lbs. Run time on a full battery charge is easily more than 30 minutes and Greysen Products claims an average of 40 minutes, which seems credible based on my experience.
