Can I replace a Kohler with a Briggs

My neighbor was hosing off his Toro rider while it was still hot. The block cracked. It is a 21 HP Kohler engine. He will sell me the machine for $50.00. It is in really good shape.

Can I replace that motor with a Briggs engine? Will the bolt pattern match? Wiring harness the same?

Here are the numbers we got off the machine;

Toro model# Timecutter Z5000

frame Model # 74370

motor model--Kohler courage 21

SV610S---spec# SV610-0020

Help Briggs Stratton Murray 3.5 smokes?

hello friends back at it again I have a Briggs 3.5 that smokes whitish blue smoke. It starts right after I crank it till I shut it off. I know its burning oil but cant find where. I checked breather valve and tube and made sure everything was tight. It ran a minute or two before it started smoking. Any suggestions?

a copy of the gasket for the intake on my fs 81

Hey guys new to this forum, I have an FS 81 trimmer I'm getting ready to overhaul got the rings and head gasket off of ebay, but need the gasket that sets between intake port and the cylinder. Does anyone happen to have a way of possibly taking one and tracing the shape onto paper and posting an image so I can make a new one? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Stihl 028AV ( needs repairs), vs. new Stihl purchase

Hi Folks. I have an older 028 AV chainsaw with electronic ignition. It needs a rebuild due to gas getting into the muffler when I try starting it. I was told that means it is a cylinder/piston/ring issue??..I would like to know if anyone here has purchased an aftermarket cylinder/piston kit, and if so, which is a better brand. Also, I am weighing the issue as to whether I should just buy a new Stihl chainsaw....what is comparable to the old 028? I have been using a MS210C and it does not have the power that I need. Any advice is welcome:) Thanks.

Poulon wheeled trimmer with 4.0 Tecumseh LEV115, need throttle/governor linkage help

I recently "rescued" a Poulon wheeled trimmer with a 4.0 Tecumseh LEV115 engine. It has a throttle cable on the handle.

The machine came to me with the carb partially disassembled and in rough shape, so I replaced the carb. When I installed the new carb, I hooked up everything the way it was set up with the old one, I'm not sure if it was correct originally.

I can start the engine and keep it running by pressing the primer bulb or by pulling on the governor arm. The throttle control does nothing, and the engine stalls if not helped.

I have a couple questions/concerns.

- Governor arm spring has a kink in the center. How do I determine the correct replacement spring?

- Linkage that connects governor to throttle control has hooks on both ends, no "z" bends. Is this correct?

- Governor arm has no resistance or springiness when unhooked from linkages. Arm will not rotate to left, but will flop easily to right. Does this indicate trouble with the governor?

- Mechanism that accepts throttle cable has no spring action.

I've attached a photo of the linkages. I unbolted the plate that sits on top of the carb and tilted it upward to take the photo.

I have the manuals for the engine and the trimmer, but neither has a good diagram of the throttle setup. I am handy, but have no experience with governor adjustment/repair.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Blades My 5 yr old 1042 has different blades than newer models. It has never cut well.

My 5 year old 1042 blades have at most 3" of cutting edge on the ends. On setting height 3 of 6, it does Ok, on the higher 4 setting it is barely passable if one drives very slowly. Setting 5 and 6, the highest, are basically useless.

Where the right front tire runs over the grass, never cuts well.

Blades are razor sharp. Belt is new and tight. Throttle at max. Deck is extremely clean underneath. I mow with the deflector tied in a up position.

My neighbors new 1042 has blades that easily have 6" of cutting area on the tips, and it seems to cut much better, at a nice heigth, and a good rate of ground speed. See picture.

My goal is of course very even cut, and second a high cut, of at least 3" finished height. Our TN fescue does best when it is cut very high, 3" is desirable, 3.5" finished cut would be even better, but maybe not possible. Speed is not an issue, as I love riding. I will take whatever time is necessary to get a good, even, high cut.

[Other people, not the new CC guy, around me cut to 1.5" and it looks horrible and weeds abound]

Do I need to upgrade to these newer blades or do I have other issues? If yes UPGRADE, suggestions of online source?

Thank you.

Buying Advice Kawasaki vs Kohler

I wanted a Gravely HD 60 with a Kawasaki engine, but I'm told the Kawasaki's are back ordered and it will be at least 6 weeks before it will be available. However, the unit with a Kohler series 7000 Pr V is available now. How does the Kohler compare to the Kawasaki?

Part 2: Only starts with carb cleaner, runs perfect once started.

Ok, removed carb, cleaned thoroughly, blew out with air hose, and reinstalled. Carb looked brand new before I even cleaned it. Confirmed choke is able to close completely. Still wouldn't start. Then, I tried "pumping" the governor control lever while trying to start the engine. Kind of like with old trucks you would pump the gas pedal when cold cranking. Started right up. Every since then, if I do the "pumping" action, it will start. Any ideas on what adjustments I can do that will correct this issue? I can live with this as it's better than shooting carb cleaner in it to get started but if it's something I can fix, that would be great too. Thanks!

List of things done so far this season:

1: New plugs

2: Adjusted valve gap to .005

3: New fuel pump

4: New air filter

5: New Starter

6: New battery 340 CCA

7: New Solenoid end of last season

8: New gas, no ethonal

9: Removed carb and cleaned.

10: Adjusted gap of flywheel at armature to spec.

Toro 3-12 seat replacement

Michigan Seat co. was the OEM for these seats part number 78-9160 discontinued by TORO in ~2010. Michigan Seat makes a universal mid back seat with the correct 7 1/2 by 7 hole pattern among others. It's available from an array of distributors including Norther Tool; their number is V-3500. This seat does not come with a safety switch and according to Michigan Seat there is no direct replacement seat that does. The original seat came with a leaf sping type switch still available form Toro part number 38-1420 but installing it into the replacement seat requires some very complicated cutouts in the metal seat pan. An alternative is to install a seat switch used on later model Toro and Lawn boy tractors part number 92-6282. This is a plunger type switch with a large muchroom type button that only requires a round hole and some threaded holes.

I used a Milwawkee bi-metal hole saw size 2 7/8 to make the opening for the switch. I drilled just forward of the threaded center hole. I drilled a pilot hole and then cut the larger hole using a cordless drill at very low speed (125 RPM) and lots of cutting oil. It take quite a while (10-15 Minutes) to get through the seat pan and the metal backing plate but it can be done. The double metal layers provide a suitable base for drilling and tapping two mounting holes; I used 1/4-20 ss screws and loctite to secure the switch. A few spade connectors are needed to extend the leads up to the new swictch becuase the old switch comes with hardwiring.

A few other hints:

1. Put paper tape over the array of mounting holes in the seat pan; the cutting makes a lot of chips and it will make cleanup a lot easier.

2. After the hole is cut take a few minutes to file away the burrs left by the saw, there are many and they are quite sharp.

3. I also used some Rustoleum black to protect the raw metal.

The new seat is a great replacement for the OEM model; I think the quality is a bit better than the original, it maintains an OEM look and the switch works perfectly. I hope this thread will help someone else who is wrestling with this seat replacement issue.

Scag Wildcat shutting off after a few minutes of use.

My Scag will run for about 15 minutes from a cold start and then shuts off. I can let it set about 2 or 3 minutes and it will start back and run a few minutes then shut off again. I have changed out the battery and cleaned the fuel system. Could it be the ignition coils?

Newbie to the forum

Hi,

My name is Jeff. I just upgraded from a push mower to a riding mower (Cub Cadet). I have one cut with the Cub Cadet and it was very nice. Rode very smooth and cut really even.

Craftsman starter issue

I have a craftsman 19.5 hp twin cylinder and having really strange starter issues. Initially I could start the tractor with the key but the starter kept running with the gear disengaged. The only way I could stop the starter was to disconnect the battery. I was checking the key switch to see if it was defective. I removed the switch and hit the dash, the mower started and was in gear ( should have had a video of me chasing the mower). I got on the mower, hit the brake and reinstalled the switch and turned off the engine with the switch. Tried to start again and it would not start or even turn over. I charged the battery again and the mower started but started kept running. Bottom line, I have checked the switch for continuity and all is ok, I have tested all the lockout switches and all is ok, I replaced the solenoid but every time I attach the battery cable the starter engages and starts the engine, this happens with the switch installed or unplugged. The engine will start and run, I have to install the switch to turn off the engine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Trailer Fire

Just had a former customer's trailer burn down to the ground last night. Will post pics later in the afternoon.

Nobody was injured since this trailer has been vacant since Saturday.

The lady that lived there recently got evicted for non-payment of rent, and then last night it randomly bursts into flames? Try telling me that's a coincidence. Everybody in the park is thinking it was arson.

Engine Broadmore 727 Engine

First Post

Not mechanically savvy. I would have someone do the work.

I found an old 727 - owner painted and refurbed -seat, tires, ect- looks nice- runs pretty decent as well.

But-I understand- it is what it is- old.

Even if it is a strong runner for a 7hp- seems awful small.

But it's an old Simplicity- - no doubt the tractor will outlast the motor.

What I am wondering is- I have a Cub Cadet with an Onen engine- I think its 14hp.

Could I switch that motor out- what would I need to check to see if they were compatible without a lot of fabricating or engineering?

OK- I did find out the Simplicity motor- Briggs 191700

the Cub Cadet motor is an- Onan Elite EH140

I am trying to figure out if the Onan won't work (which it probably won't) is there any motor I can get that will replace the Briggs? I am not having any luck finding anything on the interwebs.

Thanks for any help.

Wheel Horse Seat replacement

Anyone have suggestions for replacing a Wheelhorse 8-12 seat equipped with a safety switch?

problem with the hydraulics on an Exmark riding mower

My Exmark lazer Z has no power making a turn to the right on a hill. Dealer checked it out and said it is a faulty pump but the whole system needs to be replaced, 2 pumps and 2 motors, because there is metal filings in the fluid and that has been distributed throughout the system at a cost of $4200.

I wonder if flushing the system and replacing any damaged parts or the entire pump might work.

Help With Turf Tiger and 27 HP Kawasaki FD750D

Trying to help a buddy get his Turf Tiger running. Model STT61A-27KA. Liquid cooled 27 hp Kawi engine.

When I arrived, it would not start at all. He replaced the fuel solenoid the day before. Didn't help. The starter would click but not turn the engine over. I pulled a plug and the cylinder was full of fuel. Excess fuel virtually hydrolocking the engine. I evacuated the cylinders of excess fuel, unplugged the fuel pump, and she fired right up. So I figure it's a carb issue....

I removed the carb and cleaned and checked to my ability. Held the float valve in the closed position while apart and blew threw the fuel barb and couldn't blow air past the valve. Open the float/valve and I can blow air. Seems normal. Soaked carb in carb cleaner for about 10 minutes, reassembled and gave it a go.

Same issue. Flooding the cylinders with fuel. When it does start it runs VERY rich. Engine sounds as though it's missing and won't clean out/increase RPM. If I unplug the fuel pump while running, it will clean out and run as it should, but as soon as I plug the pump back in, it starts bogging. I can sit there and plug/unplug the fuel pump and keep the engine running like it should. For some reason the thing is just loading up.

He is going to purchase a new carb but for almost $400 it just seems like a simple fix of the existing carb would be the solution.

Figured I'd ask here and see if anyone had any experience or suggestions.

Thanks in advance folks!

Greetings to all

Hello everyone I just joined up today and just wanted to do a small intro..I..live in South Texas and just bought an older Troy Bilt model 8654r 4Hp.22 inch self propelled walk behind that was a Craigs list find . This mower was made in 1993 and is in immaculate condition. Does anyone have one of these and if so please share your experience with us about the machine.

Hi my name is Josh. Started my Lawncare and Landscaping business two years again. Right now we have Toro zero turn ,Toro push mower and troy bilt push mower cub cadet trimmer, cub cadet hand and back-pack blowers and they are 4 cycle. Also have a little wonder blower.

The best self-propelled mower no longer available

I mow an elderly person's yard with his late 80's yardman 21" mower mod.#124 848L 401. One lever adjusts all 4 wheels. Why would yardman do away with such a great feature! Bagger works great. Deck is in great shape. The self-propell feature needed work so I took it all off. I walked a little faster than it wanted to go anyway. It's not too much heavier than a regular push mower now. You hear, well they built it too good, it lasts to long, so they changed or done away with it completely. And it was made in the U.S.A. Gatorblade

Repairs problems XT 3000 Generac red engine

Have a Dixie XT 3000 with a red Generac 30 horse engine Last year at the end of the season I replaced battery and put on a rebuilt Dixie starter. Everything worked fine until left starter bolt stripped the aluminum block. Put in a new bolt with a metal collar everything worked ok for a week. Now the battery (new) is run down as nothing seem to be charging it.

After the battery is charged it seem to turn the engine over and fuel is getting to the spark plugs, but the engine just wont fire.

Bag won't fill

I have been cursing my mower for awhile now, I just bought it last year. It is a craftsman professional model made by Husqvarna. I could never get the bag to fill and it was really peeing me off. Today I decided to flip the blade and low and behold it completely filled the bag instead of it being a 1/4 full and the chute clogged. Now I am a happy camper again.

22 inch or 30 inch walk behind mower?

I currently have a 22 inch self propelled mower that I use in my lawn business.

Will I really save a lot more time by using a toro 30 inch ?

I use my zero turn mower mostly, but I do have a few backyards that I need to use my 22 inch to mow.

If a back yard takes 30 minutes to mow with my 22 inch, how much time will I cut off by using a 30 inch?

Murray riding lawn mower 425000X8 blades won't engage

Hello,

I have a Murray riding lawn mower 425000X8 that starts and runs however I can't get the mowing blades to engage. I've verified with a voltmeter that the safety switches are good, the blades turn freely and I have a new battery installed. Short of it being a PTO clutch problem I don't have any idea what else could be the problem. Anyone have other ideas or are you in agreement that it's probably a bad PTO clutch and have to replace it.

Thank You,

Harmony HRT216KS3A bad rust, too far gone? (Pics)

Last fall, I bought this Harmony HRT216KS3A for $125. I knew there was a little bit of rust. Never took care of it and this spring after 3 mows and hitting a 3/8" stick, the transmission guard broke off kicking off the cable, cracked a lot of the frame. It is bad..ugly! Now I was wondering what you all think...is the deck refab-able or is it too far gone? If not what are some good uses to re-purpose the motor because it is in excellent condition. It starts so easily that it basically starts itself.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

(Help)Ztrak 820a 7ironpro6 will turn over but won't fire(new member)

Ok..first off I want to thank anyone who try's to help this thing has me stumped..it turns over but won't crank..the key isn't engaging the solenoid but if I touch the relay in the panel together I can get the motor to turn over I checked the plugs and they are arching so I know I'm getting fire..the solenoid also has just started sticking and sometime will stick even when I turn the key off and I have to hit the top of it to make it stop...the switch is working but won't turn it over..It tried to fire the first time I tried to crank it this morning but it shut afterwards within 2 to 3 seconds. Last Thursday it started while I was cutting a yard was acting weak..then later it just shut off after a few turns of the key it finally picked power back up so I could finish my next two jobs then the next day I couldn't get anything out of it until I changed the relay..all input is needed sorry if I'm scattered brained just trying to give u all the info I can. I can't find any diagrams of the technical manual online.

Warning ! Serious error in Greenworks 20" Dual Blade Mower Maintenance Instructions

Although there is already an existing thread for this lawn mower, I wanted to make sure everyone who owns it sees this post to prevent damage to the mower when removing/replacing the blades.

Specifically, the maintenance instructions starting on page 25 of the English Owner's Manual state that the two blades labeled Blade 1 and Blade II are removed by turning the mounting nut clockwise (left-handed thread) for Blade I and counterclockwise (right-handed thread) for Blade II. In fact, the complete opposite is the case with the mounting nut for Blade I loosening counterclockwise and Blade II clockwise. I've visited the Greenworks website and viewed the online Owner's Manual, and it still contains the same errors.

The interesting thing is that the markings on the original blades for loosening and tightening the mounting nuts agree with the Owner's Manual, however, the markings on the replacement blades are reversed and agree with the actual configuration. The replacement blades were purchased at my local Lowe's under the Kobalt brand name, however, the part numbers stamped on the blades are identical (33307486 for Blade I and 33308486 for Blade II). Since I did not purchase the Greenworks branded blades, I can't say whether the markings have been corrected on them. Based on the directions that the blades are turning, it makes sense that the nuts would tighten as they do and not as stated in the manual to prevent them from loosening during operation.

LX 188 Transaxle repair

Need some help with the sequence of steps to remove the transmission from the mower frame. I have the unit exposed (wheels off, seat, floor board, and gas tank removed) and there must be logical steps to take off all of the rods etc. before removing it from the frame.

Mower quits, will run with choke closed

I have a Simplicity Broadmoor with a 16hp B&S engine (model 303777). Once in a while I'll be out cutting and the engine will die. It happened over the weekend (only the 2nd cutting this year). If I close the choke it will start up again, no problem, but as soon as I start to open the choke again it will quit. If I let it sit for an hour or two it seems to start right back up and I can open the choke and mow normally.

I've done an ok job of maintenance. I change the oil and filter, fuel filter, plugs, and air filter every spring. I haven't always done the best job of draining all of the gas at the end of the season or getting stabilizer in it right away. Any suggestions? I really appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Nick

Bolens 760 riding mower - can't move tractor in Neutral

Greetings: I'm trying to figure out why a Bolens 760 riding mower will not allow me to move it with engine off. It has a hydrostat drive, and there is no lever or rod or switch or anything I can see that would disengage the transmission to allow me to push it without the engine running (it doesn't start). And at one time I saw a sentence in the owners manual that says to put the shift lever in neutral to be able to move it with engine not running - DOES NOT WORK.... and of course I can't find that sentence anymore - the tractor is about 30 miles away but I need to figure this out - if anybody has any ideas please share - thanks much.....

Honda Commercial HRA216-SXA revival, lots of pics

Hey All,

New to this forum. I have two Honda mowers. One is a Honda Harmony that I picked up last fall. Had some deck rot issues (more on that in a different thread) and picked this one up last week. Its a 1988 HRA216-SXA that was purchased in '92. I bought it from the original owner who used it for home use. He was asking $200 for it and we settled on $100

Pros

- Decent shape

-Minor surface rust

-Low cost

-Cold starts first 1/4 pull

Cons

-Hole in the top of the deck

-Loud vibration @ certain RPMs (CHECK THE VIDEO OUT)

-Leaky carburetor (CHECK THE VIDEO OUT)

-Little/No oil when I looked at it

So the plan is to get this thing running smooth without leaks, attend to the rust and patch the hole in the deck. I am going to use this thread as sort of a journal/timeline for my project. I appreciate any feedback/suggestions any of you may have.

Did I get a decent deal?

Now my son wants the Gravely? Need input?

Today I financed a 2014 Hustler 48" Raptor SD for 4056.00 through Sheffield Financial. I haven't taken delivery and tonight my son called me and said he thinks we made a mistake by not getting the gravely 52" cut XL HD that has several upgraded components not on the Raptor SD. Like the 3100 drives vs the 2800 on the SD. Also he pointed out that the gravely. deck is chain hung and also thicker than the deck on the SD. So now I am confused as if I can transfer this loan to another company as Sheffield Financial also finances the Gravely for 0% for 48 months? Is there a way to cancel this contract and then go to the gravely dealer and get another loan, or transfer this loan to the gravely dealer and just pay the difference in cash?

Thoughts and ideas are most welcome. My son will be using this mower to cut not only my yard but several others who he cuts every week or so. Also his yard is about 2 acres that he will be cutting. I thought the gravely was a much better built mower but it was $1400.00 more than the SD so I went with it.

Need traileerfor 54" deck

I have a 54" deck or 72" wide Craftsman. I need a trailer to move it back and forth about 5 miles. Is there such a thing as a side loader? Any other suggestions?

New X300 owner,Are they good mowers? Owner Opinions

Last week I purchased a new X300 48" cut mower. My grass is not high enough to cut yet so I have not used it,it has .2 hours on the clock. I was hesitant about the purchase,I had to dig deep to pull out right out $3600 including tax.It does have the JD 30 day promise. The only issue I have is when unloading it off my trailer I noticed all the tires have bad splitting on all the tires around the tread,it was in a crate at the dealer and looks like the tires were flat and they cracked.I let my dealer know but he has been very slow about resolving this, sent him pics and he says he has to contact JD Corp but after 2 emails and 2 phone calls to the salesman he has not contacted me which is making me wonder about service after the sale.As far as the mower are they good mowers if maintained? I like the feel of the mower,it handles well what little I drove it,the Kawasaki is smooth running.I hope I made a good choice. My old mower is a 15 year old well maintained Craftsman with a 15.5 Kohler Command 42" which still runs fine but the deck is thinning along with a few minor issues. Repairs Craftsman 24hp Kohler 46" mower steering question

toro 7.25 190cc starts but has no power

I have a 22 walk your pace guaranteed to start Toro that has no power. It's 2012 that's only been used about three or four times, mostly last fall. I'm pretty sure I put StaBil in it in th fall. I cut the grass last week, worked fine. Cut half the yard this morning, ran fine. Filled gas tank this afternoon and it started the second pull but hunted and as soon as I tried to pull the lever for it to go it wanted to stall. after it warmed up it wasn't much better but would cut ligth grass but heavier gas would stall it again. Is there something electronic to do with the guaranteed to start system or is this another case of dirty carb already? TIA

Troy-Bilt horse dying

Folks,

My Troy-bilt horse will run for about ten minutes or so fine and then it will start to die, act like it's over-recovering from dying, and then gets in this cycle and then completely die. Not the greatest description, but here's a video of the behavior. I've noticed a bit of smoke when it does this also. From looking at other posts it looks like it might be a problem with the main jet getting stuck? But I wanted to ask some opinions before tearing into it. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Repairs Electic Problems

Greetings -

I own a Dixie Chopper XT 3000 with the infamous red Generac Engine (which the dealer would not exchange and Dixie would not make good) the engine has about 575 Hrs on it. The end of last year I installed a new full sized battery, and put on a rebuilt Dixie Chopper alternator. Used the mower in winter and in the spring. Lately the left alternator bolt was found to have stripped the threads in the block causing the alternator to come our of position and grind. Put a smaller bolt in with a hole insert sleeve. Everything seemed fine.

Now the engine will not start and the battery is run down. After charginge the battery the the engine will wind out but not fire. Normally despite the heavy black carbon on the plug the engine will start right up after a few cranks on the ingition.

The battery still seems to be in good shape after charging it. the alternator is cranking well but the engine is not turning over and the battery is being drained. How can I fix this.

Thanks

Mower story Husqvarna 10% rebate!!

Well I ordered a MZT52 with the Kawasaki engine almost 2 weeks ago from Mowers4Less in NC. Well according to the shipping company (Road Runner) it was going to be delivered last friday so with them not able to give me an idea about when it would arrive I took the day off work. Well I sit around all morning waiting on this phone call to say they are an hour out from delivering. It was about noon and nothing so I call Road Runner again and they assure me it will be there still that day and they should be calling me soon to drop it off. Fast forward to 3pm and still nothing So I call again to Road Runner and they say its on its way. At 3:45 i call again they say ohh no when we say it would be delivered on Friday we meant that it would be transferred to another shipping company Towne Air freight because Road runner docent deliver to my area. WHAT????? Im pissed at this point and call mowers4less and they tell me they understand my frustration and if I would like to refuse the shipment they would refund my $5,500. Well Today Towne Air freight calls and says they will be delivering it tuesday between 10am and 5pm. Hello some people work for a living and can't sit home all day waiting on a semi. So I call Mowers4Less and tell them Ill accept the delivery and take the day off to accept it but they have to do something for me , I suggest refunding $200 and David at Mowers4Less comes back with an offer thru Husqvarna that will give me 10% back. I gladly accepted the offer and David even said he would fill out the paperwork and get it mailed off to Husqvarna and I should receive a Master Card loaded with $550 in about 6 weeks. This was a nice gesture and makes me feel a bit better having to take another day off. So If your in the market ask the dealer about a 10% off Master Card pre paid gift card rebate. Ill update this post with a review of the MZT52 as well as updates on the rebate.

Changing exmark hydro fliud

I have a 36in exmark turf tracer that needs the hydro fluid changed and I'm not sure how to do it I understand you pull the filter and drain the hydro fluid tank and what's in the pumps and wheel motors doesn't come out and when you put your new filter on you fill it with oil and screw it on but I read something about priming the air out of lines??? Well I don't know how to do that and when you fill you tank there's a divider in the tank I filled it to the top of the divider on both sides is that right ??? Someone told me ones for full cold fluid level and hot full fluid level well I filled both to the top of divider so if anybody knows the proper way to fully change hydro oil let me know I don't want to burn up any pumps cause it's a costly mistake any info would help

Engine Craftsman 625 series engine seized

I have a craftsman 625 series push mower with a 190 cc briggs and stratton mower. My son was trying to mulch leaves last fall and the engine died and i initially couldn't get the engine to turn over. Eventually i got the engine to turn by getting the blade to turn by hand. I let the engine cool down and the engine would crank by pulling the pull start but the engine wouldn't start.

This spring i took off the head and i can see that the piston and valves look ok and rise and fall as i turn the blade by hand. The cylinder wall and valves don't appear damaged. I have purchased a new head gasket for it. The serial number above the muffler is 22 T02 08045-E1 and there is a number on the back 0610065918676. Does anyone know the head bolt torque values and sequence and any other ideas about this engine.

Thanks,

Dave

HRR2163TDA

Self propel drive will not pull mower when in 2nd or 3rd. It will pull its self in first. When lifted of the ground the wheels will spin when in 2nd or 3rd but they stop when I put it down on the ground. I tried adjusting the cable once and it worked for a few months now its back to doing the same old thing. Another cable adjustment or might it be something else. I am aware of the service bulletin that Honda put out addressing this issue but I don't think mine has the correct model number. Mine is 7244697I don't think my mower qualifies as one needing service bulletin. any help or advice would be appreciated.

I think mower is 2 years old and appears to have low hours. I have not been able to get it running yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you 'goof' when first learning to drive a zero-turn?

Well I did.

Got a new 48" Kubota Kommander the other day never having ever driven a zero-turn before. Thought I'd start out on the 1/2 acre behind the house. It is only a slight slope. (I should have practiced/learned on the flat 2 acres out front)! All was going okay until I lost traction on a diagonal downhill section and slid about 10' over my wife's favorite azalea bush and into some brush. How the #$%@ did that happen so fast. Yes, I had read the manual and did have my seatbelt on. Guess I need some more practice :confused2:

Review of my HRX217VKA

For those of you familiar with this mower (or any HRX mower for that matter), none of what I am about to say will be news to you.

Hopefully this post reaches at least one person on the fence about whether or not to buy this mower (like I was for about a month) and helps them with their decision.

I've owned a variety of mowers in my life, most of them had Briggs & Stratton engines, and was mostly pleased. I dont have a very large yard (about 1/6 acres) so I always stuck around the $200 price point for a mower. My most recent one was a $200 special from Sears. It had the larger 190cc B&S motor in it, but I always thought the engine was noisy and in thick or slightly wet grass the mower always struggled.

Half my property has a sandy/clay mixture and the other half has really great soil and the grass grows thick and long very quickly. In the spring, even waiting a week in between mows, the "good" side would cause the mower to really struggle. My options were to keep raising and lowering the wheels half way through every mow, or just keep the mower at my desired height and "pop a wheelie" in the thick area. This got old and I finally had enough.

I had always been aware Honda made great mowers, but the price always kept me away. After doing a lot of research, I realized that the time was now to get a quality mower. I mulled between all the HRX and HRR Hondas and even the Toro Personal Pace mowers. Was it going to be worth the extra money, would I notice a difference?

Im happy to say that after only one mow, I already can say I notice a difference!

This is not only my first Honda mower, but my first self-propelled mower, so I had a lot to get used to. This past weekend was my first mow of the season. As always, the "good" side of my lawn was getting pretty long already. I rarely ever bag my lawn, so I would always mulch and my old mower would have really struggled, and while I'm not going to make up ridiculous stories about how the Honda was flawless, because it struggled too, but the difference in what I would have had to do with the old B&S mower and this one was huge. With the Honda, I did not have push down on the handle bars to elevate the front wheels at all. I had to go slow, and there was some clumping, but not a lot. The old mower would leave a steady stripe of unmulched grass following the mower. Was this because I went with the 190cc Honda motor as opposed to the 160cc, or was it a difference between a Honda engine and a B&S engine, I honestly don't know. But regardless the reason, I felt as though this engine is a lot stronger than the one in my old mower.

I kept the Smart Drive off throughout the thick grass and slowly pushed it and the mower did its thing like a champ. Where I really noticed a difference was in the less thick areas of my lawn. Even in shallow to medium length grass, the old mower would leave clumps of grass behind and with the Honda, there was none. This mower definitely does a better job at mulching. Since I did not use a bag, I did not get to try out the Versamow feature.

As this was my primary reason for buying the mower, I am already very happy. Using the Smart Drive was a joy. At max speed, I definitely have to hustle to keep up with the mower, so I would say I keep it around 3/4 throttle most of the time. When the mower is driving itself, I literally just follow it with a light amount of tension on the handlebars to keep it pointed straight. Since this is my first experience with a self-propelled mower, I had to remember to lay off the throttle when I wanted to turn, or back up the mower in a corner!

The Smart Drive paddles were comfortable for me to use. I like that they're adjustable to accommodate different people. After a complete mow of my front and rear lawns, my hands were not fatigued at all, and I also noticed that I had no lower back pain like I would often get from the old mower from having to constantly press down on the handle bars to keep the front wheels elevated.

A couple other observations about the mower that are well documented on this and many other sites, but are still worth mentioning. This is a large mower. It is a couple inches longer than my old B&S mower, and also heavier. The Smart Drive system negates the extra weight, but when you are in a corner and have to push and pull the mower backwards, you feel the extra heft. This isn't a problem for me, but I could see it being a little bit difficult for a weaker person (like my wife or an elderly person).

The handlebars are extremely comfortable. I am glad to see that ergonomics are considered in modern lawnmowers. My old mower still had a horizontal bar, which in a short mow isn't that big of a deal, but for people with large yards or with carpal tunnel problems, it could get uncomfortable. I like that the VKA's handlebars are padded. I find it curious that the models with the Blade Stop feature are not padded.

The handlebars are adjustable in 3 positions and I kept it in the highest of the three, but by no means is the highest, high. In my opinion, the highest setting is just normal for someone of my height (I am 5' 9"). If I were to lower the handlebar, it would be too low. This would be good for a short person, but I gotta think that people over 6 feet might find the highest handlebar setting to be too low.

I love the ball bearing wheels. This mower just feels solid. When it rolls, you really feel the smoothness across the ground. My old mower was 5 years old so the cheap wheels had become to loosen over time, but even when the mower was new, I never remember the old one feeling as stable as this one.

Engine noise was about what I would expect from a gasoline powered lawnmower. I've never really heard a quiet mower, but my old B&S mower was noisy, and this one just doesn't seem quite as loud. But I have no scientific evidence to prove the fact, but I believe this to be slightly quieter than my old one.

Starting the mower was easy. The very first time I fired it up, it started on the first pull. It was nice to not have to mess with a Prime button or a manual choke. Honda's auto-choke feature worked as advertised. One thing I will say though, is that if you do happen to stall the mower in thick grass, it took 2-3 attempts to get it running again. My old mower was the same way, but the single-pull convenience of this mower doesn't work when the deck is filled with thick grass. Most of you would probably say "duuuh" to this, but its worth mentioning that this mower doesn't perform miracles! :)

One last thing about the mower is that although I could not find it on sale anywhere, I bought it from Home Depot, but I used a site called https://www.raise.com/ to save a little bit of money on the mower by buying gift cards for Home Depot at a discount. There are a variety of sites like this where you can buy a gift card at a discount and then use the gift card to buy stuff. Home Depot lets you use up to 10 different gift cards during check out. I bought the mower on Home Depot's site and chose to pick it up at a local store. Doing this saved me $51 on the price of the mower. Not a huge amount, but hey, every bit counts! :)

So there you have it. Like I said, nothing in this review should be new to anyone, and those of you who already have experience with Honda mowers (specifically this model) already know this is a great mower. I just thought I would share my experience for anyone who might have been on the fence about whether to buy it, here is one more positive review for you! :)

lawnboy v force

was going out for dinner last Friday nite and my girlfriend spotted a lawnboy at the curb.We picked it up.It was a self propelled v force with rear bagger and it was a case of total neglect.looked to have a new plug in it a j19 LM wrong so I changed it over to a Champion j14 but had no spark. checked the coil and it was new looking but the wrong one.Changed the coil to the correct one and cleaned some gunk out of the fuel tank and put in fresh premium non ethanol fuel. One hit on the primer button and it started first pull.Self propel system worked perfect. It surges a little on idle but I have yet to clean the carb.Last week I aquired a red lawnboy v force sp that was a case of neglect also.Cleaned the carb on that one and it started first pull also.I cleaned and greaseed the rear wheels and it works great.I know the v force motor is a pos but its running.

Ariens Zoom 34 - subtle squeaking when I am on the move

I just bought a used 2009 Ariens Zoom 34 that is in great shape. When I test drove it, I didn't notice any squeaking or squealing. But not that I have mowed a few times, I notice at very low speeds, when I go forwards or back, I notice some squeaking. It is almost like squeaky breaks, but it is not high pitched, but more of a low tone. It just sounds like something needs lubed.

I'm not sure if it is a belt, or if there is something with the steering levels that I can grease.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brad

Wrong mulch color issue

So i have a customer who needs 12yds of mulch he requested dark brown. The mulch gets delivered and now he says its to dark......Its dark brown. He wants the mulch company to pick it up. How would you guys handle this? I wouldnt blame the mulch company for not wanting it back .

HRC 216 Adjusting Arm Issue

My Honda HRC2163HXA has very loose Front Adjusting Arms, so that the wheels are bouncing around and the Front Adjusting Plates are jumping out of the adjusting notches.

The Front Adjusting Arms just wiggle around in my hand - as if they were wallowed out. All of the bolts are snug and tight.

I read the post by Robert@Honda about a Service Bulletin issued in late 2011 - do you have more info on the problem - as I believe my mower needs new Adjusting Arms in addition to new Adjusting Plates ?

I purchased my mower in March 2011, and it's Frame Number is # MAKA-1093755.

Did they make new style Adjusting Arms ? And if so, do you have the part numbers for the new Left and Right Adjusting Arms ?

If they didn't make a new style Adjusting Arm, do you have the old part numbers ( for the Left & Right ) so that I can replace them ?

Thank-You,

Darell

Hi everyone,

5.5 Honda, dropped something in oil tank

I have a mower with a 5.5 Honda. I tried to use my oil extractor pump to change the oil but when pulling the hose out of the oil fill hole it got caught. When I pulled on hose the plastic connector/adaptor plug came off inside the oil tank. This is the reducer/adaptor plug that joins the larger diameter hose to the smaller one. I cant see it inside there, I tried tilting the motor on its side but it wouldn't come out. Is this likely to block/damage the oil pump or can I just leave it in there? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

My murray mower sounds like it's screaming!

I can't figure out what is wrong, it's a Murray wide body mower. The sound comes from the engine. It's a Briggs & Stratton engine. I would like to take it apart and replace whatever part is making the sound. It's pretty embarrassing to say the least. It stops when I drop the blades though. I'm in the process of buying another part (for the deck) and would like to get them both at the same time. Thanks for your time y'all

Husqvarna Mondo Mega string trimmer

Just acquired an old Husqvarna Mondo Mega string trimmer, and I am trying to figure out whether it can do what I want, and if so how.

What I need to do is to cut some small (2-3' tall, 0.5"-1" in diameter) birch in a field, without mowing the whole field. The trimmer came with a broken string head, but I figure if this will work at all, it will take a bladed brush head. Got two so far, but neither one fits the spindle on the trimmer (wrong spindle diameter and/or thread pitch). Also, the guard is very small (4.5" to the center of the spindle at the closest), and even if I could fin the bladed heads on, it looks like they will hit the guard.

Can anyone offer any advice?

--Is the Mondo Mega up to the job?

--If so, does anyone have a suggestion for what type/brand/model of head to use?

--Are larger guards made that would fit it?

Many thanks,

bluemower

troy-bilt steering bar

My steering bar has come off and I was wondering if anybody has a picture of how it is suppose to look. I have it jacked up right now and I need to put it together to get it out of the garage but I have no steering right now.

Newest mower project

This is the new mower I got today of kijiji for $20.00. Its a Murray with a 3.5 Classic B&S. I got it running but it seems to run pretty rough even after a carb cleaning. Compression is strong @ 120. I Tthink I'll grab a carb kit for it and see if that helps. Anyway here are some pics.

Bachtold Bros "The Whipper" Belt Size

I bought a used Bachtold Bros brush cutter. Model name is The Whipper, model number is W24. It's a great piece of equipment, but I can't find a source for the drive belt. I only found a small piece of the belt after it broke, so I can't simply measure the carcass.

I've been all over the web and all I can find is the company is out of business and no one knows anything. I'm hoping the collective wisdom of this group will help resurrect a great machine.

Problems with Snapper rider model 2809-15BE

I can usually start it right back but will only run a few seconds unless you return it to level ground. Thanks for any ideas

Mower Jack

Just noticed that Harbor Freight has a mower jack on sale for $99 in the store and $89 online. Ordered one online as shipping is only $6.99. And if you happen to have one of their coupons, you can apply that also as I did. Thought I would try it as it's much less expensive than the popular MoJack but I'm certain the quality wouldn't be nearly as good as the MoJack.

Craftsman Tractor Model 917.2711051 Wont Shift, stays in first gear

My Craftsman 42" 6 speed transaxle tractor is stuck in first gear. When I try to shift in another gear their is a tremendous amount of resistance. Previously i had about 3 gears and it wouldn't go into the reverse position. When i took it apart I noticed that the i had a part on the shifter mechanism that was broke and I don't know if that was causing the issue or the result of me trying to force it into gear.

Walker motor stalls when trying to engage blades??

Hi I've got a 1995 Walker model C GHS with the 16hp Kohler motor in it, the mower has been great to me up till now its a lil older so the wiring on the machine is a lil chopped up but like I said I never really had a problem with it. I went to use it yesterday and it started up with no problem but when I went to engage the blades there was nothing, after a while of messing with the wiring I got the blades to engage but as soon as I hit the blade switch it squeals like always but the motor dies out. I thought maybe a bearing froze up but everything turns freely by hand but every time I engage the blades with the motor running it trys to engage but kills the motor. If theres someone out there that could give me something to try out I'd appreciate it, Thanks.

New to Forum: Help identifying model?

Good afternoon and I'm glad I found this forum. Below is pictures of a lawn mower I bought for my son and I to fix up. I need some help identifying the model so I can get the right parts. All the identifying features are off. It has:

1. 21 inch Murray mower self propelled front wheel drive lawn mwer

2. Electric start which is inop and missing the battery.

3. Throttle with engine kill as well

4. The most distinguishing feature is that the pully for the self propelled is in the vertical plane versus the horizontal plane like newer ones.

5. B&S motor.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I went to start my 14.5HP DR Brush mower for the first time of the season and the starter cranks but the gear on it doesn't rise up and engage the big gear to crank the engine. It moves up and down easily when I grab it. When I crank the starter it spins but doesn't rise. When I let go of the key it then pops up a little, but not high enough to engage the gear. If I hold the starter gear up and crank the starter it doesn't rotate when the starter motor is cranking. It worked fine last season when I put it away. Anyone have an idea?

Repairs Z Force 48 won't move

Model 17AI5BHB010 quit moving. The hydraulic pump is not activating when the brake lever is released. Is there something I should look for before I take it into a repair shop? I am the mayor of a small town...with little tax base...and this is the mower that was purchased a few years back to mow our cemetery with. I had it tuned up at last month and thought it was ready to go for the year.

Is there a fuse that could have blown that activates the hydraulic pump? Possibly the switch went bad?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exhaust pissing out gas...

Okay, so today I removed my muffler to try and confirm that it is the muffler that is shot on my lawn tractor (Still haven't fixed it from this past January), and immediately when I started cranking the engine (spark plug wire removed) gas started pouring like a faucet each time it did the exhaust stroke. Is this normal? I have never had an issue with my tractor running rough. I do notice, however, that when the engine turns over, it runs rough for about 3 seconds, meanwhile spitting gas out of the muffler. After that it's perfectly fine. Could this be an issue with my carb's float?

Kohler engine

Thanks, for allowing me to jump on board. My problem is with the engine revving up and down on it's own. I bought a carb kit, gaskets and o-rings and it did not improve it. It will start and run it just revs up and down even at full throttle. But when I kick in the blades it runs smooth. It a Kohler SV735-3022 (26hp)

Thanks for any help.

STX 38

Does anyone have an STX 38 hood?

Mower deck blade spindles

Bought a new Ariens 20HP rider. First time I used it on a new lot that had tall grass and straw. Cut the stuff great with no problems. I inspected the mower deck when I was done and the blade spindles has a lot of twine from the bales of straw wrapped around them. I removed the blades and was able to get most of it off but there was still some wrapped tightly around them. I tried cutting it off with a sharp knife but some still remains. Will this hurt anything?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Repairs Bad Gas

Well this year so far I have a mower and a chainsaw that wouldn't start. Both Jobs they were getting everything they needed to run. As soon as I put fresh gas in the fuel tank they both started and ran good. The old gas smelled OK yet but it lost its kick for the equipment to run.

My tractor will not start and have tried many things

I have a craftsmans ltx100 18hp 42" cut. It ran fine last year but didn't want to start this year. I have got a new battery, new starter, and new solenoid. Not sure why it is not wanting to start or even try to start. When I turn the key to the position for the lights to be on, I hear a clocking sound. It sounded like it was coming from the solenoid and that is why I went and got a new one. Also, the headlights do turn on so it is getting power just no crank. Can someone please help me out. I saw that there was another member that had a similar problem that made a posting a few posts before this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

JD LX178 surging

I have a 1995 JD LX178, and have kept it in good shape. This season it has been surging non stop when running even without the PTO. I have done most small maintenance on this but need some direction for this.

Thanks,

Noisy Deck on John Deere 170

I have a older John Deere model 170.. My concern is the amount of noise it makes when the blades is engaged.

Ferris 500 no charge

I have A FERRIS 500 with the Briggs engine (about 4 years old) and I have been having to jump start it the last few times and I just thought it was a battery problem....today I got it started but then the PTO wouldn't come on , finally figured out it needs 12 volts ( I guess) to engage so I put a volt meter on my battery and there dosent seem to be any voltage coming in to keep it charged......not sure where to start as I need this mower bad and cant really let the shop keep it all summer....I can get it to engage if I get it running then hook up my jump box but after 30 minutes or so it disengages again....

Problems with Snapper rider model 2809-15BE

I got a Snapper rear engine rider with 10 hp B& S model 28A707-0122-02. I chged oil,new spark plug, new tires, new air filter. the mower runs good on level ground but when I go across a hillside (not straight up and down a hill). It cuts off ,pops and stops running. I can usually start it right back but will only run a few seconds unless you return it to level ground.I removed the carb float bowel and it seems to be full of fuel and fuel is flowing well from the fuel tank. Thanks for any ideas

Mower deck Deck belt will not stay on after disengaging PTO

I have a 13AK608g062 serial #1d070h10770 42" single deck belt mower that works great when I engage the deck belt. All goes well until I disengage the PTO. The belt then flies off.

It seems as if there is not enough tension on the belt after I take the PTO off. When I enguage the PTO it cuts great. I have looked at the deck diagram and cannot see anything that is a belt tension devise when the belt is idle.

I have the correct belt (97 inch) . I am stumped because everything works well except the belt is loose when not engaged.

Please help!

Repairs Club Cadet 1325 stuck in neutral, won't shift...help!!

My Club Cadet 1325 will not shift out of neutral, what can I do to solve this problem?

ventrac 4200 steering and implement hydraulic loss

I had last used the ventrac for blowing snow in March and backed it into the garage, it was working fine. A week ago I wanted to change the blower for the mowing deck, but the steering and implement hydraualics are very sluggish to not working at all, it will turn the blower chute very slowly. I do have forward and reverse hydraulics. The tractor is 12 years old with under 2000 hours, so I changed the front and rear hydraulic filters. It still acts the same. Any help would be appreciated, I can not find any problems similar on the internet. Thank You, Frank

lawn mower stall after 1/2 hour working

I bought a Honda HRR 216PKA K9 series a few months ago. The mower worked perfectly well when I first bought it. However recently, the engine keeps on lacking power and stall. This lawn mower has self propel facilities. I want to know if the self propel mechanism is driven by a belt or gear. If so will the belt slips if the grasses get lodge into the pulley that drives the belt. Also is there any fuel mixture screw I can adjust the fuel mixture of this engine as I find the engine is lean on fuel and maybe this causes the engine stall. Can anyone has this problem with the same Honda Engine?

Thanks

Repairs Hard to explain

Have craftsman 24HP automatic lawn tractor. This problem just started. When depressing the brake, clutch pedal (Left foot pedal), and releasing when released to almost top position (towards seat), drive belt makes chattering noise. Not in mower deck does this without deck on. If barley resting left foot on pedal or placed 1" block of wood between pedal and foot rest noise stops. Tractor moves fine in forward and reverse. Not drive belt brand new, and all pulleys seem ok. Seems like pedal is traveling too far up or towards foot rest. Cannot find any adjustment. This rod goes to belt pully to put hydrostatic in and out of gear. Forward and reverse are on other side. Rod also goes to transmission lever with spring. If I pull back on pedal towards operator makes chattering noise worst. Any thoughts on this problem? Sorry to be so vague. Will supply additional info. E-mail is mudmixer@yahoo.com. Thank You

19 hp kawasaki gas in oil

My gravely zero turn is ending up with gas in the oil. Dealer said they cleaned the carburetor. I'm thinking that they didnt. Where can I buy th full rebuild kit? Also, where else can I check for the issue? Motor seems to run fine and has no leaks that I can tell. Thanks

Help me choose a new mower

So I am in the market for a new mower following 8 years of trusty service with my plain-Jane Troybilt. The mowers I am considering are the following:

Husqvarna HU775BBC

$362

I had this one and traded a friend for it once I got my Troybilt working again. It was a great mower except for one nitpicky thing. The front wheels are set in from the back so trying to cut close to the edge of something was more difficult than with a mower with front and rear wheel that were aligned.

Toro Recycler 20333

$375

I like everything about this one except I am unsure about the Personal Pace system. The concept seems simple enough, but i am use to having more direct control, like another handle or the squeeze control on the Husky. It was reviewed very well by Consumer Reports

Honda HRR216K9VYA

$483

I like this mower but have two concerns. First, the GCV160 engine seems to be underpowered for a self-propelled mower. To get the larger GCV190 engine, I'd be looking at spending a lot more money ($676). I am also not sure about the speed control. Many comments relate how difficult the control is to use.

So, what do you guys think? Any other mowers I should consider? I appreciate your time!

Uses oil

Just bought a

Cratfman

Model 917.272760

04 LT1000

18 hp Brigg Straton

Hydrostatic transmission

It is using oil. The sparkplug is black and full of debris.I have searched the net found a lot

of people are having the same problem. And have

a lot of answers. But none saying it has been solved.

I heard one person say some thing about

(1) The reed valve in the breather was STUCK CLOSED. Test it by removing the assembly and covering it with a rag. Then run the engine for about 5 minutes to see if the oil smoke stops. It usually does. If that solves the problem, just go to your local dealer and buy a new crankcase reed valve. Under $10.00 for the kit, and 1 minute to install. Labor at the dealer is 15 minutes if they do it plus parts. The reed valve opens and closes with the pistons to allow excessive crankcase vapors to go into the carb on the down stroke of the pistons. With a bad reed valve stuck in the closed position, excessive crankcase pressure forces the oil vapor past the rings and into the combustion chamber where it is burned and smoke is the result. (2) This is a little harder to check. There is a screw under the carb going into the top of the crankcase. It hold the baffle plate on and I have found several times where the screw had sheared off. Now the plate is no longer held tightly in place and oil slung around inside the case is allowed to pass around the edges of the baffle plate. You can tell because the screw should be secure. If it is loose...tighten it. If it's missing...it has sheared off and it's time for an engine teardown.

hello everyone im new to this forum as of today but i have a technical question

Tecumseh electric start with a clutch engaged cutting blade. problem is that the engine loses power when engaging the blade then quits running, like the clutch and blade is too much for the engine now. have to pull start it now and after some warm up time it will engage the blade but I know its just not right. any ideas from anyone. so far I went thru the carburetor and was surprised to see a red emulsion tube and not a blue one and I checked the timing mark on the steel flywheel and I also tweaked the governor spring to increase its running speed slightly. it will not start with the electric start because its just not spinning it over fast enough. I have noticed that when I shut it off I can see the vapor coming out of the back of the carburetor. I will do a compression check next and possibly a head gasket unless someone knows whats up with this engine. its on a toro personal pace.

Hello from Springfield, MO

Good evening everyone! I'm Brian from Springfield, MO, home of Bass Pro and birthplace of cashew chicken. It's time for me to replace my 8 yr old Troybilt push mower with something a little nicer. I have been searching here for hours reading about particular mowers and engines. I will be posting in another section about my search. I hope you'll take a look and throw in your two cents.

It burned up???

Run my 2 yr old Troy-Bilt Horse for the second time this season. It ran great,no problems. Got about 90% of my yard finished when it ran out of gas. I decided to let it cool down before I added gas. Cut it off after disengaging the blade, raised the seat and went in the house. I had another place to go so I washed my face, changed shirts and started out to the car. I noticed a curl of smoke coming from around the corner of the house. I ran around and saw my Lawnmower completely engulfed in flames. I attempted to put it out with a water hose but it was too far gone. Thank God I didn't have gas in it and that I hadn't immediately added gas or I wouldn't be here writing this problem. I don't know what caused it. I maintained it and kept it clean. It was only 2 yrs old. Anyone know what could have happened? Does anyone know of a saftey recall on this model or anyone else experience a similar problem?:frown::mad:

Flywheel Spins like a Top - Is this Engine Toast?

I have an older Snapper rear-engine mower with B&S engine and recently may have caused it to seize, though I'm not sure. Checked oil level, forgot to secure oil cap, tipped it up to install new blade . . . oil all over driveway. I added fresh oil, checked the level, and it showed fine. But within about 5 minutes of it running there was an awful clattering noise, then the whole thing shut down.

I then tried pulling the starter cord and it wouldn't even budge. Left it alone for a week.

Went back today, and checked the oil level first. It showed almost nothing, so I'm thinking when it showed "fine" after putting oil in, it was really a faulty reading, likely picking up oil from the side of the fill tube from when it was tipped up. So, it seems I probably did effectively run it with almost no oil in it.

I tried the cord again today, but it still wouldn't budge. So I tipped it up and tried to engage the blade/drivetrain with the engine so I could force the blade to turn. Had read where that might move a slightly seized engine. But the blade turned quite easily. Not really sure it was engaging the engine.

Upon returning the front end to the ground, I tried the pull cord once more. NOW, it pulls easier than ever, but it's because the flywheel obviously isn't attached to anything inside the engine anymore. It spins like a top. I heard nothing pop loose today like a broken piece falling loose or anything. But clearly it went from not budging to spinning like a top. So what might be the issue?

I've never had an engine apart, but I'm guessing there's a shaft of some kind connecting the flywheel/pull assembly to the engine, which turns the engine over. I suspect the awful clattering noise just before the engine died a week ago, was perhaps this shaft shearing off? And it was jammed enough not to pull at all until I tipped it up today, and perhaps unjammed?

Does any of that sound plausible? If so, is the engine shot? The mower, itself, is in good shape. Would it be worth buying a new engine for it?

Robin EC13V Float Needle

New to the forum so I hope this is the right area. I searched the forum and web before posting.

I have a older Snapper CP214012R2 with the Robin EC13V 2 stroke engine. Great mower for many years. I was doing spring maintenance and getting ready for mowing season and noticed that it was not running at top speed and was surging somewhat. Took the carb apart and the viton tip of the float needle was cracked and fell off as soon as I touched it.

I can find the needle but the cost is $40+ buying a Robin part. It is a mikuni carb. Does anyone have the mikuni part number for the needle or an alternate application I can use to not have to buy the Robin part?

Thanks,

John
