New Guy - looking to buy ZTR

Hi I am new to the forum. Looking to get a NEW ZTR, very interested in Scag Freedom Z but a friend says before I bite the bullet to look at the Hustler Raptor sd.

I have really enjoyed reading the forum, I didn't realize that there are so many mowers out there, so many Name Brands.

Why disconnect spark plug when servicing?

I've seen this recommended in a number of places. Wondering why.

Snapper Rear Engine Riding Mower - Model 2812523BVE (7800104)

Hello All,

The engine runs like a top and the cutting blade turns nicely. However, I cannot make the mower move either forwards or backwards by changing gears. I was told the most likely problem was a disc with a thick rubber around it. True enough, the old one looked worn out. So I purchased and installed a new clutch assembly, but it did not fix my problem. If anyone has any knowledge of what may be causing this situation, I sure would like to know about it. I enjoy working on my own equipment, but do not know what to try next.

If there is other information you may need to help me out (before the grass gets knee high), I sure would appreciate hearing from you.

Kohler PH-XT675 Not Starting

I have a 22" Front Drive Toro with a Kohler PH-XT675 that I bought new from The Home Depot last summer and worked great but first time trying to cut this year it won't start. I have done everything that I have read but still no success. Put new spark plug, checked to make sure it fired, fresh gas, cleaned the carburetor, can't think of anything else? I tore the carburetor all the way down sprayed every hole and it came out on some other end fine, even used a piece of wire to clean the jet orifice. Put a little gas into the spark plug hole, nothing. Sprayed carb cleaner and starting fluid behind the air filter, nothing. I did leave the old gas in the tank over winter but drained it and put fresh in. I'm lost. It would make sense if it were like 6 years old but it's 1 year old and used like 7 times! Any and all help is appreciated!

PTO

I had my turf tiger serviced last fall. Today I pulled out the pto for the first time and the blades did not engage. I pushed it in and pulled again and they did engage but were slow to spin up to speed. After mowing a little bit I stopped and pushed the pto off and on and the blades started up as normal. Any ideas?

Thanks for your input.

Kohler Command 12.5 OHV oil leaking help!

Hoping someone has an idea what this might be, I've taken this engine off twice now, and down to the local mower shop for repair, still leaking once it warms up.

The first time they replaced the output shaft seal, the oil pump gasket, and the O ring on the oil dipstick tube, which is pretty much everything on the bottom of this motor.

Is definitely leaking underneath somewhere that it cant be seen. Motor is clean and bone dry with shrouds removed, nothing running down the sides.

It was ok a few mowings, then oil mostly around the output shaft, all over the electric mower deck clutch, pulleys, flying off in all directions. Pulled the motor off again and

could see the shaft seal was crooked in its seat and the rubber seal edge (in contact with the output shaft) was partially rolled under, partially not.

They replaced the seal again, pretty much the same thing happened again. I finished out the season with it last year, have to add oil every 3rd mowing or so.

Not taking it back to these folks, they're the biggest outfit in town, supposed to be good but since I didn't buy the mower from them, they put me on a back burner and

act like they really don't want to work on it.

Do not know what brand seal they are using, are some better than others? I'm no small engine mechanic, just a tinkerer :)

Can't feel any side play in the shaft, no sign of heat damage to seal.

Really want to fix this, have had this mower a lotta years and have gone all out to keep it in nice shape. details :

Is a John Deere STX38, 1991. Kohler CV12.5s spec# 1249 Runs great, no smoke, oil still pretty much yellow at the end of the season,

virtually no oil usage before this leak, hope someone can help, thanks..... Paul

Briggs 900 series

Can anybody tell me if a Briggs and stratton 900 series horizontal shaft has an adjustment for the carburetor. There is an idle screw but I am am not finding any other adjustment. Engine runs a little rough but can't find the mixture adjustment screw.

Hard starting Honda GCV 160 Lawn Mower

I acquired a Honda GCV 160 lawn mower that hasn't been started in a few years. Dismantled and cleaned carburetor. Replaced gas and cleaned air filter. Engine has manual choke. Takes 20-25 pulls to start engine. Once it warms up it takes only a single pull to restart engine. Any ideas on what is the problem. Thanks.

Troy Bilt Wheeled Trimmer - HELP

Hello folks, I picked up a Troy Bilt Wheeled Trimmer model number 52029. It's a 6HP with electric start and the engine runs great. But it's missing a critical part that MTD no longer makes. I've searched every where and can't seem to find one. The part is called a spindle head. The old part number is 1910861 and was replaced by part number 1918700. Does anyone out there have one, a used one would be fine. I just hate to junk this thing because it runs great and is in otherwise great condition.

If anyone also has one of these and has found substitute parts to modify it I would love to hear from you. - Thanks, Dan

Tiger Cat First Blade Removal

Well I made it harder than it had to be. Used a 6" c clamp for the side blades and a breaker bar. Then the fun began with that middle blade. The pulley turns with the nut and I couldn't get it blocked correctly. So, I borrow a 3/8 drive impact wrench and it wouldn't budge. Then went to a 1/2 heavy duty and the nut zipped right off  Anyway my question is what impact to buy, 3/8 or 1/2, brand, Craftsman ok or chitty like most of their tools. Is 75 ft lbs the correct torque ? Thanks in advance.

Need new zero turn in 6-7k range. Please give input.

Will need new mower this spring. Personal use, 4 acres. Hilly, not steep. Some bumps here and there. Think rural, not farm. I'm thinking 60 inch deck. Need s to be durable. I don't live very close to any dealers or large cities, so everything is a drive. Looking online and calling for prices, I've narrowed choices to Gravely pro turn 160XDZ which dealer has %20 off sale coming up in 2 weeks puts it in around $6300. Simplicity Citation XT from another dealer for $6250. And Snapper Pro S125Xt just under $6k. Oh yea, Ferris 700 for $6700 ( think with B&S commercial turf.

Last resort if needed, buy larger used machine. Did see Snapper Pro S200 for $5500 (different class of machine from current choices).

Have not got to demo any of these, nor actually see one. I actually did look at a Dixie Chopper Magnum HP for $6400, but dealer was ***. He didn't seem interested in making a sale, and there are no other Dixie Chopper dealers anywhere near.

Not sure if engine Kohler vs. Kawasaki vs. B&S Commercial turf matters. If I were running machine 30 hrs/week that may be different. I don't expect more than 2-3 hrs/Week.

Any ideas or other suggestions. I did hear a few complaints about Gravely traction issues, but they seem heaviest build. Wondering if pivoting front end of Simplicity/Ferris make difference in cut/handling from the solid front of Gravely. Liked look of Bad Boys but can only get one around here from Tractor Supply, no service.

Comparison Looking for ztr

I am looking at the Scag Freedom Z and the Cub Cadet Z-Force SZ along with the Hustler and Bad Boy but after reading in this forum I am quickly narrowing it down. I haven't looked at the last two yet but it looks as if the Scag is still in the running. Between this forum and Consumers Reports Cub Cadet is out CR says customers complaints prone to repairs. The Freedom Z had a Kohler engine don't remember hp but will find out today. Between the Kohler 7000 Pro or the Kawasaki FR, any suggestions, have heard the Kohler Courage is a good engine but is pricey to work on? I have used an Husqvarna 2011 model wasn't impressed but it's a friends mower. I mow approximately 1.5 acres. I'm 64 looking NEVER to have to BUY another lawnmower for the rest of my life. I hope. I live in Shell Knob, MO so to get to a dealer is a chore 20 to 30 miles of winding roads. So I will be checking out the Bad Boy and Hustler tomorrow they are at the same dealer in Arkansas 27 miles away.

About to buy a new push mower. Need help deciding. Have narrowed to three brands.

Hi everyone. This is my first time here. My old lawnmower died on me last year and I need to get a new one. I've narrowed the selection down but I need help choosing. I will tell you my choices and you can see if you can figure out the best one or offer your own. I don't need a self propelled and prefer quality and a good engine plus a reasonable price, but if you can beat one of my choices and still come in around $250 you are welcome to let me know. I am looking at the Cub Cadet SC100/SC100HW. They are practically the same but the HW has 11 inch rear wheels, but it looks like it will be hard to find. They both have 159CC Cub Cadet branded engines. The next choices are the Troy Bilt TB120 and TB130 The TB130 has a 160CC Honda GCV 160 series engine and the TB120 has a 159CC Troy Bilt engine and appears to be a newer mower. Finally is the Craftsman 11A-B2BQ799 item number 07137237000. I don't know why that model number is so complex. But anyway, it is a brand new mower this year and has what appears to be a 163CC Briggs and Stratton 725EXi engine. There is a very small chance that I could get a Craftsman 37037 item number 07137037000, it has an old style 190CC Briggs and Stratton 725ex Platinum engine. I did find out that this engine is the old style L-Head type vs all the others which are the newer OHV engine.

Blade Won't turn all the way around

Hi,

I was trying to start my mower for the first time of the season. I was pulling the cord and it was working correctly, but wasn't starting at all. I then checked the oil and it was off the stick. I filled it with oil, but now the handle won't pull at all. If I turn the blade by hand it goes about 330 degrees around, but on each way of turning seems to hit something. I've inspected it pretty well and it's not hitting anything underneath for sure. I took off the shrouds or covers on the top and can't see anything it's hitting there either. I also read about hydraulic lock resulting from tipping it the wrong way (which is a good possibility) so I pulled the plug and moved it back and forth a bunch of times, but nothing changed. The shaft doesn't seem bent or wobbly or loose. Any ideas? If it seized (which to me seems unlikely because it never actually started), would I still be able to turn the blade?

Thanks,

Andy

to many choices....

In an earlier post I thought I had a new ZTR down to a couple of choices (Cheetah or X One) but no such luck. Today I took a look at the Bad Boy line geared towards the Outlaw XP and was very impressed, what a tank WOW is all I can say. Anyone using a Bad Boy or demoed can you help shed some light??? Again I mow around 6 acres about 3 are yard and the rest is old corn fields /pig farm. They priced out the 72" XP for roughly 9400. and the 61" for around 9300. Got a chance to ride and it was amazing bit didn't cut any grass so I'm not sure on the cut

Engine fuel filter location on YTH2448

I have a YTH2448 with B&S engine 446677 0463 E1

I thought that it's probably time to change the fuel filter since I'd never done it before (and the mower is a good few years old now) but I can't find it. Where would it be? The mower manual just shows the fuel line and not where it's located. The B&S manual says "if equipped" so I don't even know for sure if there is one.

As you can tell, I'm rather a novice so assume nothing :-)

Whereabouts on the mower is it?

How do I adjust walking speed on Honda Self Propelled Mower- Model VC6X

Well, my husband bought me the Honda Self Propelled Lawn Mower Model VC6X. It's too fast for me. If I pull that lever that makes the wheels turn about half way, that's a perfect speed for me. But it's too hard for me to keep that lever pulled in about half way. It hurts my hands no matter if I hold it closer to where it connects, the side or palm up. I hope someone knows how to make the speed of the wheels slower. They use to make where you could move a lever to pick how fast the mower would roll. Not everyone is a man with long legs. :)

Thank you

Front mount Spreader for RSD 54

Hi all, I'm looking at options for a front mount spreader for my RSD54. I really dislike tow broadcast spreaders and with a walk out basement and wing walls they all look too narrow and tippy for navigating the terrain. I'd like to take advantage of the maneuverability and stability of the mower and slap a spreader on the front. I dump 400#+ of product on my yard every 6 weeks between lime and low density fertilizer (crappy clay needs all the bio matter it can get) and humping bags around with the walk behind gets old quick. At least with a mower mount I could drive back to the house to refill.

This is homeowner use so I need to keep it on the lower end of price, but still something that isn't POS and will last me a while. I picked up a Buyers ATVS100 but on inspection it looks like the shutoff/ control gate will last about 10 minutes. I think I will be taking it back. I think their larger 15 gallon unit looks much stronger and the mounting plate will give me some better options to fab a frame to attach it to.

Any experiences with spreaders?

command pro 17 crankcase vent

I'm thinking the vent may be plugged or not working. This is a single cylinder OHV vertical shaft kohler 17hp. When it is running there is a lot of smoke coming out of the breather and white milky oil dripping out of the hose that comes out of the valve cover and in to the air filter housing.

Where is the crankcase vent located and how do I tell if it is working?

I have a Poulan 1338 lawn tractor. Nothing happens when I turn on the ignition switch. The lawn tractor was operating fine. I stopped it for about 5 minutes. When I tried to restart it - NOTHING. Oil In push rod galley?

I know I have the thread on the head gasket but I just want to make sure if one thing. On all these videos on YouTube that I see where these people are changing or adjusting the valve covers on Intek Vtwin OHV engines I see NO oil inside the valve cover. I am use to seeing oil inside my valve cover on my car engine but the question is on These beigs Vtwin engines is it not good to have oil puddling In the push rod galley and oil in the valve cover when looking I side this engine. I am sorry for asking this question again but I just want to be clarified On This particular question. When I took my valve cover off it had oil sitting In The valve cover and puddled In The push rod galley and where does this oil come from and where does it go to. Just trying to learn how the oiling process works on this type of engine and what's good and what's not good. I do know that oil o. The spark plug is not good lol. I have learned this. Thanks again for replies. I feel stupid as hell for asking this question by the way lol. But a question is a question I guess....

hyd . oil change

I have a tiger cat w/61 in deck and I changed the oil and filled the filter before installing it like the manual said. The manual said it takes 2.5 quarts of oil to fill it to with in 3 and 1/4 inches from the top. I have put in 2 3/4 quarts and its still 3 and 3/4 inches from the top. Do I keep pouring oil in till I get to the 3 1/4 inches from the top? Thanks

Powr Kraft 18 hp 42 inch cut

I need a left front wheel hub for my Powr Kraft 42 inch cut 18 hp riding lawn mower. It is an old MTD manufactured mower originally sold by Montgomery Ward. The model number tag was lost years ago before I bought it used. I do not know the model number. The left front wheel hub needs to be replaced as the wheel hub is bent out.

Does anyone have any idea where I could find one? They look to be all the same as i have another MTD that I rob parts off of to fix the good one. The hub on the one I have for parts would work but I can't get it off as it the bolts have rusted to the point that I can't get it off. Does anyone have an idea of the model number for this mower? I can post a picture of it and or the part I need if that would help.

Thanks!

New to me Craftsman LT1000 couple things, pushing mower question

Greetings all. Got a 2002 (I think based on serial number 022004d002845) LT1000 model 917.273401 with a B&S 18HP ybsxs.5012vp 274826. Got it on craigslist for 100 bucks back in October. Came with the bagger and the guy even delivered. Figured how can I possibly go wrong! He thought it had a head gasket leak so I figured it should be fixable. He only thought that because he smelled burning oil last time he used it. Thing started up for him fine and it drove around fine. We tested before shaking on the deal.

Fast forward to today and I am doing the following: Changing the oil (got almost 2 quarts of black gritty oil out, think there is probably not a leak, just not taken care of) got a new filter coming (man those are pricey) new spark plug, new fuel filter, new prefilter for the airfilter.

I went to push it to the middle of my garage since I already drained the gas and the push pull rod was not disengaging the wheels. Each rear wheel wanted to spin in a opposite direction. Which I think is how it is supposed to go. Once I lifted the back a bit I was able to pull it backwards with the right rear wheel dragging just a bit. So I think the push pull is not properly working.

I pull off the back plate and the first thing I notice is that the push pull rod does not seem to actually do anything. It is attached via spring to a piece of metal and is just sitting there. Is it in the right place?

20150329_140838.jpg

I also feel the drive belt is very loose. I can cross the two sides over each other easily. Here is a shot looking towards the front:

20150329_151111.jpg

I will be clearing off all the grass before using it. And I am doing all of this work before trying to get the engine to run! But with everything changed, should be fine.

I do have a downloaded pdf of the correct manual but not seeing what I am needing.

Another thing I saw, I volt metered the battery which is only a few years old and got 12 volts, but when I turned the key to headlights, they did not come on. Do they only come on when the engine is running? I didn't start it since the plug is out, oil drained and such. I probably will not get a chance to finish until this coming weekend. But weather here is in the 40's and had a inch of snow last night.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Engine will not speed up!

I have a Briggs & Stratton motor model no. 406777-0128-E1. It will start but when I try to make the engine go faster it will not. I have checked the speed cable and it will turn the arm coming out of the carburetor. When I move the choke lever the engine will go faster but does not run very smooth. Do I need to work on the carburetor or is the fuel pump bad? :confused2:

Clueless and confused, looking for advice form the Pro's

Hope everyone is doing well! Great wealth of knowledge you all have here. I've read a ton of posts and gained alot of insight, but haven't found one that addresses my specific questions/issues/concerns/confusion. I currently mow roughly 1 acre with some hills and trees, nothing crazy, with a 21inch self propelled troy built, which has worked OK but as you can imagine takes forever, bogs down in any grass over 3 inches, and makes me feel less manly. Anyway, I'm in the market for a new mower, but can't decide which way to go. I'm a firefighter, and as I'm sure you all are aware, a ton of guys I work with mow on the side, so they're all telling me to bite the bullet and buy a commercial walk behind (think Exmark Metro or something similar) in a 36" to 48" cut at around 3700. Now, my wife has an issue spending that kind of money because "why would you pay 3700 for something you still have to walk behind". So I started looking at lawn tractors, and found some Aeriens at home depot with some good reviews.....but it's still a residential tractor that will die in what, 3-5 years? So, expensive walk behind is out, cheap tractor is out, so next, on to the "prosumer" mowers like the toro time cutter and the like, in the $2500 range. I like the idea of those, but then I get nervous that they simply won't last and I'll be back here in four mowing seasons asking for advice on where to blow another $2500 bucks. So, if you were me, expecting your first kid in July and wanting to spend more time with him and less time mowing, but trying to do it on a firefighters budget, what would you do? I'm sure many of you will say used, and I'm not opposed, the only issue is that I would have roughly $1500 cash, and finance whatever is left, so I'm not sure how far $1500 will go in the used market, not to mention, I'm not REALLY sure I know what to look for in a used mower.

Thanks for the help in advance and sorry for rambling on. Making these big ticket purchases, specifically before bringing a tiny human into the world is nerve racking, so I figured I'd better get some honest advice.

Be blessed! Justin

Drives for pulling lawn accessories

I have a Hustler Sport 42 with the EZT drive and for the last 3 seasons I have pulled my Cyclone Rake leaf vacuum with no problems. I now have a 40" plug aerator and de thatcher and want to upgrade my machine. I have found very little information on pulling. My local SCAG dealer told me that the Freedom Z with ZT 2800 would not work. I then looked at ZTR's with ZT 3100 drives as they are commercial and HD. Every Mfgr has machines in the $5K and plus range with these drives. By chance I was on the Gravely site looking at their ZT HD machine and saw their ZT XL spec sheet. It uses the ZT 2800 drives and on their accessories page they list a 48" plug aerator to use. Now I am perplexed as to what machine to up grade to. Any thoughts or experience on this would be appreciated.

Lawn Boy 8601 Self Propelled

I have a Lawn Boy self propelled 8601 mower.(1980's vintage) It has good compression, was stored, owned by a fellow who took care of it and it hasn't been used a whole lot. I've got two other mowers, one being a commercial LB and another 4 cycle. I don't need this mower. It has spark and did kick over a couple of times but it has been stored and the carb, which is plastic, is in bad shape. I'd rather give it away to someone who could either fix it, has a carb for it, etc rather than junk it. I live in MO and I make runs to PA, Kansas City, and to Iowa. If there is anyone who could use this mower let me know. All I really care about is that I don't want to sell it, but if I have to go out of my way to get it to a new home, a few buck for some gas would help. I can submit a photo if you like. Thanks. How do I drain the oil from a 1994 Tecumseh VLV55?

Hi,

A family member just bought this at a yard sale for $10. Prior owner, who she trusts, said that the carb need cleaning. Foolishly, I agreed to get it running.

The engine is a Tecumseh VLV55 model 501029A. The mower is an MTD/Yard Machines model 124-477D013. The engine also says 'Vector XL/C' on the top. Suspect that this is the name of the mower.

My current problem is how to drain the old, black, engine oil. Pictures from internet parts sellers suggest that there is a drain plug on the bottom. I can't see it. Might be covered by sheet metal. The user manual is apparently made of unobtainium. The engine service manuals refer the reader to the same unavailable manual.

Does anybody remember how to drain the oil from one of these? I'm beginning to think that tipping the mower over to drain through the dipstick port may be the answer.

Thanks in advance!

60" Hustler X One with Kaw motor

60" John Deere Z925m

60" Scag Cheetah.

I really like the Cheetah but for the $$$ not so sure. Like the looks of the JD looks heavy duty but never owned any JD products and the Hustler looks really heavy duty but a more simple design. From everything I've researched all 3 cut well, I'm more interested in in the build and comfort of the ride. My property is 6 acres and flat as a board but as it is old corn fields it's fairly rough. Currently use a BX25 with 60" belly mower and it takes roughly 5 hours and the tractor beats me to death. Need a ride where I can stretch out. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

2006 craftsman lt2000 won't crank

Hi there I have a question on my 2006 craftsman lt2000 riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton intex 20hp singal cylinder. Just recently changed the oil and oil filter and it started up just fine but when i went to cut some grass I turned on the blades and the moter sounded like it had no power so I shut off the blades and the moter picked up speed but when I turned on the blades again and I went forward and the moter quite all together and won't start back up I can even spin the moter over. Can anyone here help me please. Thanks

John Deere K-Series walk behind 12 HP 48.comm

The transmission felt like it was slipping in high gear only, now and then, but then it slips in all forward gears. How can you tell if it's the belt, looks good, or the transmission?

gx 1320 yellow deck - How to operate it?

I bought a John Deere GX 1320 (I think it is a mid 90's) 48" walk behind (also known as a "yellow deck") ... It did not run. I got it running, but I do not understand the controls. With the engine running and the shifter in 1st gear, it takes off as soon as you pull down the dead man lever. The brake handles on each side have no effect until they are FULLY depressed at which time the corresponding wheel "locks up" The ONLY way to stop it is to release the dead man lever. It must have a transmission problem. It looks like it has a trans axle as opposed to a hydo. Since I have never used a machine like this, I have no idea what to expect. I have a shop manual but I can not find a free operators manual on line.

On another note...I really want to put electric start on the 14 HP Kawasaki. Has anyone done this?

Who Makes What

Carb Adjustment..19.5 Opposed twin

42E707-2631-E3. 4 bolt fuel pump.

I've rebuilt this carb just a few months ago. But, I have to choke it nearly all the way, and sometimes have to unchoke and rechoke it while it's running, to keep it running...

Any tips on how to adjust it? Or did I get something wrong when I put the fuel pump back together. Or could it be something completely different?

Repairs Seat safety switch

I just replaced the seat on my Z225. The new seat isn't from John Deere so the safety switch doesn't fit in the new seat. Does anyone have any suggestion to get the switch to work. Temporarily, I have bypassed the switch but do not want to keep it bypassed.

FS 36 weedeater won't stay running

It will run, for a few seconds.

When you push the primer bulb, the fuel comes up to the carb...but it does not stay. It drains back into the tank.

What holds the vacuum in the carb to keep the fuel up?

I think if I can stop the fuel from draining out of the fuel line...problem solved.

But, I have been wrong before.

New 2014 Raptor SD 54' - I still have time to back out...

I just purchased a new Raptor SD 54' from the dealer today and it will be delivered sometime next week. I found this forum tonight and noticed several negative comments about the mower, the way it cuts and clutch issues. Are the issues fixed or should I move on to another mower? Looking for some honest feedback... Thanks!

Could I need head gaskets replaced?

Hi forum members, my name is Guy and I am new here so I am just learning how this forum works so if I do something wrong please tell me. I have a cub cadet zero turn with a Briggs 22hp Vtwin OHV engine. I just did the seasonal tune up on engine and when I checked the old oil I noticed it was just alittle low so I started looking at the engine really good. I pulled the spark plugs and they were black wetish/ oily on the left side head. Right side just alittle but both were black with oil on them so I put the new spark plugs in and When I started the engine it doesn't smoke hardly at all BUT I do have oil inside my muffler because I can see some smoke where it's burning off the inside of the muffler Once the engine was warm. I also noticed where the muffler tubes bolt to the heads has oil crud around the two bolts and while the engine is running I see little bubbles of oil. I had to look really close to see this happening as it wasn't really noticeable until I got looking at it closely. I cleaned the oil that was around the muffler tube where they bolt to the head as I thought it was from my valve covers were the oil. The motor starts and runs fine. The oil was a little low when I pulled the dipstick before I changed the oil and I made double sure not to put too much oil in the engine when I added the new oil. I have no oil inside my breather/ air filter area. I have read a lot recently since I noticed this issue and what I have read leads me to believe it's the head gaskets. I pulled the valve covers and I had oil In the push rod galley which I don't know if that's normal or not. So the engine starts up with no smoke issues and runs good but I am getting oil leaking out around the muffler tube bolts that hold the muffler to the head and I noticed on the left side head (facing the engine from the back of the lawn mower) on the left side bottom of the head as the engine was running on the fin that's closest to where the gasket is I can see oil running down the fin out

towards the wheel side of the head. This is very little oil I must add because I cleaned the fins which did have old oil build up on the bottom. Also when I checked my valves while I had the valve cover off the exhaust valve was tight and I needed adjustment . I am hoping I have caught this early and can save my engine. It doesn't knock at all. Just oil loss issue. If I wasn't so particular I probably could use it like it is but if there is oil coming out from these places I know something is wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I go

Hope i said too much and confused the issue. Thanks again for any advise.

Weird wear on 2135 mower deck drive pulley?

As part of the spring cleaning, I always lube the mower deck and sharpen the blades. This year, I noticed the dual pulley which takes the main drive and transfers it to the deck was loose. Closer examination showed the top ball bearing OD was .100" loose in the pulley housing. I've never seen a ball bearing get loose and wear the OD that much. I made a shim to take up the loose fit, but WIGO there?

Pump Drive Belt Broke on Raptor SD 54"

The new mower has 3.6 hours and the pump drive belt broke today. I loaded the mower up and took it to my dealer. The mechanic said he has fixed 5 Raptor SD with this problem. He said he would remove the hydros place a washer (spacer) on each side because the belt is interfering with the cooling fan on the hydro. When this happened it sounded like an idle pulley was making noise and had vibration. The belt broke right away. I sure hope it gets fixed quickly and I have no more problems. This is the second time that I have cut grass with the mower and it really cuts grass Very Well.

2135 - Check the rear wheel lug nuts!

I was doing the annual spring cleaning; new air filter, oil and filter change, lubrication, check tire air pressure. This time, I happened to notice the left rear lug nuts were loose. I'd have thought I'd have noticed if they were loose last year, but who knows?

Purchasing a new mower

Hi, my name is Peachy. I am looking, to purchase a new zero turn. I have just under an acre with several trees to mow. I have been looking at a Toro TIMECUTTER SW4200. Just looking for advice on this brand and open to other suggestions on different brands as well. My budget is $3200. Thanks

GRRRRR these darn Walbro carbs!

Hey my friends im soory i need more help. i have a Poulan FL20 string trimmer for a back up weedeater and i recently swaped to pre mix fuel and need help. i cant seem to get the carb adjustment down. I despise adjusting these things and i need any tips or steps as to adjusting em. and the piston is not scored and the carb is cleaned.

some questions after changing to propane

I finally got fed up with ethanol gasoline messing up my carb on a self propelled mower, so decided to try propane. I just removed the fuel tank and plugged the carb fuel line. Then added a small propane torch size bottle, drilled a hole in the air filter, and added a regulator and hose from a grill, using the brass part with the small hole poking toward the intake of the engine. It works good, but has to be started with starting fluid. I use the knob on the regulator to control the speed.

At first I lay the bottle down, but the regulator froze so had to mount it upright. Now after 20 minutes or so, the bottom half of the tank is frosted over.

So my questions are, why won't it start off the propane even with the engine hot and why does the propane tank freeze like this? Do I need to change the plug to a different heat or does that matter?

Thanks,

Alan

Help me with buying a zero turn

Next week I plan to buy my first zero turn, the mowers I'm seeking are Gravely at HD52, or the Toro Titan MX5400,

Last is probably way overkill but it's the scag turf tiger in a 52".

My yard is an acre and I'll be mowing my dads yard which is about 2.5 acres. Both places are flat with trees to mow around.

The Gravely with the suspension seat I can get for 5500.00 out the door

The Toro is right around 4200.00 out the door

The Scag is over 7k out the door.

Thanks for advance and comments to why you choose between the three listed good and bad please.

turf tires

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and glad I found you. I have a JD160 lawn tractor. I'd like to put new tires on it and I'm wondering if some makes/models are better than others (like cars). My primary use is mowing and the sizes I need are: F: 15x6.00-6, R: 18x8.50-8. Also, are changing these tires something you can do at home with hand tools?

Thank you!

John Deere STX 38 steering problems

Looking to repair steering problem on my John Deere stx 38 yet need schematics just in case there is more to it than replacing the bushing. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks

MZ52 Seat

I'm looking at a MZ52 ZTR, and the seat has no type of spring suspension, I believe. Is the mower rough riding? I have a fairly typical country yard with mole and other imperfections, and on a regular riding tractor type mower with a hinge at the back and springs at the front seat, it is pretty rough riding.

STX38 yellow deck won't start

It would crank and crank but not start. I checked the ignition and it probably needs replaced too. It had a problem where it would run. Then die. I would have to wait several hours before I could start it again. I pulled the starter and tried it. The gear will pop up into the top of the housing but doesn't spin. Does that mean the starter is bad?

Thanks

Jason

Poulan Pro Engine Replacement

Hello,

I have an older Poulan(Silver) 38" cut with 14.5HP B&S motor that runs great but transmission is stuck in 3rd.....no reverse

Someone just gave me a newer Poulan Pro 42" cut with 18HP B&S motor with auto trans. The motor is froze(he said ran with no oil), but everything else works fine.....including the transmission.

So, will it be a bolt on replacement to replace the 18HP with my 14.5? The two chassis at first glance looks identical.

Not sure if I should of posted here or Poulan forum.....

Thanks

Mz 5225 Won't start after it has been running Fine???

Hello everyone! I need some help. I have a strange situation for you. I go into my shed and turn on the mower to back it out and cut the grass. As always it starts cold just fine. However the other day I cut half the yard and stopped it in front of the front door. I went in to get a drink and my hat since the clouds were going away. So after about five minutes I went out and tried to start the MZ 5225 and nothing. No clicking noise I mean dead silence. my cousin came over with his multi-meter and checked the battery and it was fine. After getting it back in the shed ( with Help) I parked it for a day. Then having another day off two days later I went to cut the grass and it started fine cold as it did before. Started right up. I didn't dare stop in the middle of cutting the rest of the grass though. Has anyone had this problem before? IS there an overheating sensor on this machine that might be acting up? I find this very strange. Thanks for your time in advance!!!

One last thing. I found on another site where someone with the same mower was having the same problem. Someone told them the air filter is bad or needs cleaned. Today I went out and cleaned my filter and yes the pre filter was very dirty. I don't know if that is the cure though. I don't see how it could be.

Spindle Spacers between bearings

Trying to figure out if I've gotten myself into a pickle.

I was making my first attempt at replacing the bearings on the mower deck ( 2004 Huskey Supreme 50" deck). I found out by accident about 3/4 of the way through that unlike the videos I watched on this process there are two spacers stacked on top of each other between the bearings. Needless to say during my hammering the lower spacer got flipped on its side and one end and the exterior got buggered up a bit.

Do I need to find another spacer or should it be alright as is since it seems to just float in place anyways.

Size Limits for Uploads

Sometimes I've tried to upload a complete manual only to find it exceeds a size limit, I have many PDF files that I'm sure would be of much better use to SOMEONE needing information on their mowers issue , rather than sitting in my computers hard drive, (actually I put EVERYTHING on flash drives to keep my puter drive empty) is there a reason for the size limits ..... ?? Please enlighten me , am I doing something wrong , Regards, Boobala ...:frown:

New Bad Boy member

New member here that finally joined after lurking for a while. Just purchased a brand new Bad Boy CZT 60" after researching for a couple of months. I originally wanted a Gravely as I've been a die-hard fan of the brand and set out to purchase a Pro-Turn 60. I have about 6 acres to mow on my estate in Florida and wanted an entry-level commercial grade machine for longevity. After going to the dealer to test ride and go over the details, I couldn't get past how expensive the machine was with the Kawasaki with the features it came with. I kept remembering how much more the Bad Boy offered for even less money but never took them seriously. Found a local dealer and test drove and wow, VERY under-rated brand in my area. I was certain they were cutting corners to give you so much more for less money but for my use I couldn't find any. Several hundred less than the Gravely, HydroGear 3400 vs. 3200, 7 gauge deck vs. 10, 10 gallon fuel capacity vs. 6, grease fittings on forks vs. plugs, bigger tires, better seat, adjustable levers, and more things I'm probably forgetting. The electric deck lift works great for me, but I see how a pro might want a foot lever instead. The warranty is only 2 years vs. 3 on the Gravely, but that's the only negative I found. Everyone under the sun said to get the Kawasaki over the Briggs and Kohler (don't touch anything less than the Vanguard or Command with a 10 foot pole). All the dealerships I visited agreed on that hands down, and it matched my own personal experience. The cut for me has been stellar after the first mowing, and I hope to keep it for many years. Lots of general brand bashing by people who are brand loyal out there, but I think most people are able to read between the lines today. Like everything on the internet there's good advice and some not-so-much. I'm still a big Gravely fan, but you can now add me to the Bad Boy list too.

Changing drive belt issues on CT151

Hi all,

We brought a second hand Husqvarna CT151 ride-on mower 6 weeks ago, it worked fine. After 10 hours of mowing, the drive belt fell off and it was extremely worn so I decided to replace the belt from this source. I fitted on the new belt, it is rather loose. When I release the brake with the engine off, it picks up some tension but still rather loose, in this state I can easily pull the belt 3-4 inches and when I let go, the tensioner goes to its maximum reach and can't go further. The tensioner spring looks good and it's firm. I don't want to test drive with the belt as-is, worried that the engine will quickly wear out the belt by slipping. I have the manual and the pulley layout shown is different to what the actual layout is, the number of pulleys are different. I've had someone double check the belt route and he confirms that it looks correct. I'm not sure what I should do next - should I return the belt and get a shorter one? Or I'm making a mistake somewhere? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

Regards - Piers

engine swap

sup guy's and gal's i have a craftsman mower model #31p777/0296e1 and a poulan modle# 219807/0389b1 are these motors interchangeable?

the poulan was dry on oil and now its dead, [B][B]SHAME ON ME. but the craftsman is a good motor but a bad transmission so i believe. on the craftsman there

is a lever on the back, when pulled out, you can drive it; but when it's pushed in you can push the mower by hand without harming the transmission/rear end.

i moved the craftsman mower today and noticed that as i was pushing it one wheel would roll forward and the other would roll backwards go figure!

also on the craftsman the battery does not charge when driving it, so the craftsman is pulling 100% of the electricity directly off the battery. what could be causing this?

How to install rings on piston

Hello All,

Help needed!! I have a B&S 17.5 ohv engine and would like to know the position of rings on piston. One ring has a star mark on it. Does this ring go in the top or middle position? Hustler Raptor SD 54" Pricing, where to buy from

I live in Central PA, around Harrisburg. The nearest dealer seems very nice and knowledgeable, however won't budge on price $3999.99 + $60-$75 to deliver.

Does anyone have any dealer recommendations or online sites that would save me a little $$. The difference in final OTD price is about $500 from dealer vs Big Box store with a 10% off coupon.

What did you all pay and who did you buy from?

Bumper to Bumper Warranty

How can a lawn tractor have a bumper to bumper warranty if it doesn't have a front bumper?

Zt-4400 hydro gears

I heard they are more efficient allowing Better responsiveness and more power for your mowing deck.

Troyblt ZTR 50"

The mower deck drive belt keeps coming off the rear (or power) pulley of the motor, because a small stick has gotten between the belt and the pulley. Each time it requires me to have it taken to a shop, fixed and returned for $150. This has happened twice now. I'm 75 and too old and creaky to get down on the garage floor to attempt to replace it.

The pulley seems very exposed. Surely there is an after market guard that can be installed to keep sticks out of the pulley ?

husqvarna 125L broken bolt, fix/replace crank case :(

Hey guys,

Working on my husqvarna 125L, a crank case bolt broke off. I tried grinding the bolt flat, punching the centre then drilling out but drill went off centre, now its a little crooked.

The only thing I can think of to do next is;

1. Use a dremel & try grinding the bolt surface flat again, then try again, with a left hand drill bit. I would need to buy a left hand bit and/or screw extractor.

or

2. Replace the crank case, which has been super hard to find, but may be easier/cheaper than mucking about with the bolt + buying tools.

Does anyone know where to find a spare (used) crank case section?

heres a couple pics,

New to the forum, to ZTR's and New owner Hustler Raptor SD 48

So I was telling the guys at work, I am ....umm frugal. Been mowing with a second-hand 20 year old Snapper Hi-Vac that actually is an awesome mower, but turns like a semi and previous to that have always bought a demo or return , end of season or close-out whatever mower of the walk behind variety.

Well you know how when friends buy something you kinda glance it over and maybe inside lust a little. I was gazing at my buddies Craftsman zero turn, and he could not get over what an improvement it was over his previous tractor style, did I want to try it? I actually resisted until a few days ago, I had been reading up on ZTR's but had not even tried one. The craftsman was uber cool, then I tried a Hustler Raptor 42, and then a Raptor 48 SD, SIGN ME UP! what a difference, noticed the smoother transmission of the SD and just plain like the beefier construction of it.

Pathetic thing is my yard is a quarter acre, but have a rental that needs help from time to time and neighbors might eyeball my new wheels and allow me to tidy up their lawn , er I mean hire me to mow for them.

Should be in my garage Saturday, looking forward to it a little.....Okay a LOT!

Deck Spring

Does anyone have a picture or know where I can see a picture of the deck spring on 917.288260 Craftsman 42" lawn tractor? It came to me without one and I have ordered one but the diagram Sears puts out doesn't really show where it hooks up. It is part number 88 in the diagram. I believe the left rear deck bracket accommodates one end of the spring but not sure where the long end hooks to??? Anyone have one they can snap a picture of, would be greatly appreciated.

got a new gravely!

My gravely pro turn 148 finally came in today! I traded in my gravely zt xl for it. So far I love it. Mowed the yard with it real quick. And it's so much faster then my old zero turn. Now I'll be able to get my yards done even faster. I'll post up some pics

Honda GCV160

Hello Folks,

I just bought a used GCV160. It fires right up on the first pull, but the engine doesn't sound like it is running at full capacity. At times, it will sputter a little, and then catch itself and pick back up. This is happening pretty constantly during use. Any ideas on what it could be? It has fresh gas and oil. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!!

where can i find a mower deck

I have a Deere 260 garden tractor but I need another deck. Well I don't have to have another deck but by the time I invest in all the new parts it needs, I am thinking I can buy a decent used one. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look for one? I have tried internet searches for salvage yards and so far only come up with one and he is pretty proud of that one. :frown: The tractor itself is in too good of shape to scrap but its too old to invest almost a thousand for a used deck.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

21HP Intek Valve Guides

Does anyone know what the specs are for the valve guide clearance on the 21 HP Intek (331877 0939 B1)? It is from a Craftsman Rider about 6-7 years old. I have not put a dial indicator on them yet but they are pretty loose!! I was burning oil BAD before I decided to rebuild. I believe the head gasket was blown between the piston and pushrod chamber so this may be where the majority of the oil was getting into the combustion chamber. Do people knurl the guides to tighten them up? I know that is what we did 30 years ago in high school when rebuilding an engine.

Thanks!

LAWNMOWER BONEYARDS....possible new forum

I have several mowers now of different heritage and am always looking for places to get used and newer parts. It might make a good new forum for posting where all you guys find your parts. I know a lot of these old machines are in somebody`s backyard and there are some business operations too. I`ve got a good full size tractor boneyard close by but don`t know of any lawn/garden tractor mowers graveyards.

I could use any info on the older Case and Ford right now. Any help would be appreciated.

Classic Honda HR17 Pushmower for sale

I have a beautiful Honda HR17 Pushmower for sale. HR17's were made in the early 80's and this is one of a handful of survivors. Not a museum piece but in very nice shape. It works almost like new, looks very good for it's age. I also have the bagger for it that is like new, a few clippings in it but that's it. It's a 17 inch cut and has Honda's famous roto stop to disengage the blade while leaving the motor running. I've had it stored in my shed for at least three years and with fresh gas it started on the first pull. The fuel shutoff did drip a little and may require tweaking or replacing. (Yes the valve is available for around $20) As a side note, I also have another HR17 that is not as nice still stored in my shed and will entertain a package deal if you desire. I think it ran a few years back and will be a great parts mower if nothing else. Asking $175 for first mower and $100 for second. $250 for both.

TH16 Kohler owners out there ?

Got a nice low hour Walker ( 465hrs ) in the shop with a blown Kohler TH16S engine,

The oil pump sprocket has been spinning on the shaft so it has been running splash lubrication for quite a while by the looks of it.

The owner had it in a big box mower chain store for repair & they told him it was unrepairable because the engine turns the wrong way.

Have been doing the rounds of engine shops but it looks like TH series parts are very thin on the ground.

So two questions ?

1) any one know a shop with reasonable stocks of TH parts ( 2001 model ) ?

2) any one confirm the direction of rotation of an OHC TH series Kohler ?

I got the mower and 5 boxes of bits which are supposed to be the engine bu no starter motor so it is a bit hard to verify.

Thanks

16.5 horse Mtd high idle/run speed

I have a mtd yard machines with the 16.5 horse briggs and stratton engine and it has a very high idle upon start and running. Last year it started spitting and spuddering while running so my uncle and I tried to fix it, which in a way we did but afterwards it has a much higher idle and run speed than it used to. Just wondering if anyone had any tips/pointers to try and fix this?

Slow Self Propel

Hey guys,

Last year I scored an older Troybilt Model number: 12AS5690063. The sellers got rid of it because the self propel isn't working. This thing runs like a champ, started on the first pull after winterization.

Since I like tinkering and learning about these old mowers, was going to attempt to fix the self propel. It does propel, but very slow. Front wheels engage when lifted. Will propel on concrete but not so much on grass. I figured it might be a worn belt. Removed the cover to reveal huge amounts of dirt. The belt looks pretty good to me but I'm not sure how tight its supposed to be. The drive bar does engage the cable at the transmission, although I'm not sure how far is fully engaged. I will continue to mess with it, perhaps look at tightening the cable.

Any thoughts about this?

Need help finding Yazoo Kee Kutter 48" Walk-behind drive belts!!!

Have a great mower, 48" Yazoo Kees Kutter, Commercial Walk-behind. Can not find proper drive belts. Have looked for days and called everyone. These belts are double V, some called banded, 1.125 Wide x 50.5 long. Any help greatly appreciated!!

R8237. sell propel

I am not sure I understand how this works. I replaced the rollers, adjusted the engagement rod and it still does not pull well, if at all. If I lift the back the wheels are turning.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Frank

new member

Hi All,

New to this forum from the great Bluegrass state.

Looking to buy a new riding mower and am trying to decide between a cub cadet xt2 lx46 with the fabricated deck and a husqvarna yt46 LS. And having said that, since I am a big Kubota fan, there is always the possibility of a Kubota t series, but they are double the price.

I have a few acres that need to be cut. The terrain is not very even and it is a pain to maneuver my tractor and Bush hog through it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am looking forward to being a part.

Turf Tiger wiring

Hi guys

I have a Turf Tiger around a 2000 model and I have a problem of blowing fuses. I have both circuit diagrams for machine and Kohler Ch730 25hp engine so next will be tracing the circuits.

Now my violet wire from the stator B+ goes straight to the starter solenoid which in turn is connected to the battery, is this correct?

Also the engine connector has three terminals and there is nothing connected to the top in but the wiring diagram (SCAG) shows a white wire going back to the mower dash.

I am assuming the previous owner has modified the wiring. The funny thing is that if I replace the blown fuse it will blow the good one in the other circuit.

Any ideas. Does anyone have a photo of there Kohler 25hp engine connector wiring both sides of plug for reference or could pop out and grab one for me, would help heaps.

I have a regulator on order just in case this needs replacing, I am awaiting some parts to get the negine up and running before I can check the voltage outputs.

Thanks

Asking $4300 OBO.

61" Turf Tiger Tensioner pulley spring

I need some help anyone, I am recently divorced and when I got the mower out today I mowed a few strips of grass and the blades quit working, after further investigation I noticed a spring off on the cutter deck. I cannot for the life of me figure out where the other end of the spring attaches too. I hate to have this thing hauled in just to look really really stupid and then they will charge me an arm and a leg. I downloaded the manual off of Skag's website but its getting dark now so I will be back at it come tomorrow. I know this will be a simple fix if I can just figure it out. Any help or suggestions I could get would be great!!!! Thanks

Hi all rayyar here, I am a new member and need some help with a Honda harmony hrb 215 I just picked up. the govener holds the throttle wide open all the time and no amount of adjusting the linkeges solves this problem. the only way the engine will run is if I hold the throttle closed manually and then it will idle but It imidiatly dies if I give it any more fuel, but it will rev up if I hold the chock closed and open the throttle. thanks for any help I can get.

Dixon Ultra 52Transaxle Fluid change?

Where do I get 20W50 motor oil? Farm and Fleet does not have it. Would Atlas? Is there any place to get the filter except a Dixon dealer? Would a Husqvarna dealer have them?

Homelite UT20044B won't stay running

Well I'm new to gas powered trimmers so I'm not sure what's going on.

I pumped the primer button, and pulled the string only for the trimmer to die. Finally it would run but when I put the choke to half choke or run it dies. Am I doing something wrong? I've only had electric trimmers before so this is new to me.

Not sure if something's wrong or if I'm just not doing something right.

Thanks for any information!

Mower dies when engaged

I have a riding John Deere mower with 42" cut. Just changed the blades out. Now when I engage the mower, it dies. Does anyone know what may be causing this problem?

Hustler Engine Guard

Recently became available- does anyone know where I can find a part number for my mower?

I checked on Hustler website, but could not find. Thanks

Craigslist find

Well, today I was thumbing through Craigslist just to see if I could find a gas powered weed wacker when I came on one heck of a deal. Figured I would have to spend about $20 to $30 on one but ran across an ad for 2 Craftsman mowers and a gas weed eater for $15. Called the guy and he still had them. One mower labeled as running but the other not, with the weed eater as well for $15 total. Picked them up and I think i got a good deal. One mower needs a little TLC to get running, such as a different handle as the old one is bent, new plug, and oil, and the other is pretty much a parts unit. Non running mower that needs a new wheel, rear deck mulching flap that's wired open, and possibly a sheared flywheel key/bent crank. As for the weed wacker it's a Homelite dated 10/05. I don't know much about them but figure a little tinkering I can get it running, as well as some fresh gas/oil mix. The one with the engine issues will be sacrificing its handle and carburetor for another Craftsman that needs those parts. The other Craftsman should be running with minimal effort.

Decals

Hello, I have an 70's model rally roper and I'm looking for some roper decals, anyone know where online I could find some? Dosent need to be a perfect match I just want the brand back on my hood, thank you

IS600Z Engine Question

First, greets to all!

I've been reading in the shadows all of the great info you folks have posted. Which in turn lead me to my local tractor shop/Ferris dealer.

I have read here and elsewhere, to pay the $450 for the Kawasaki engine.

The dealer however says, B&S has come a long way and the "Briggs & Stratton Commercial Turf Series" and that is their engine of choice. In the past few years of this engine, they report 0 returns or warranty issues. They sell about 30 Ferris units annually.

They would gladly order me one with the Kaw, and try to get it shipped, and arrive by Derby. Derby by the way is about the 3rd week of mowing season here. HOWEVER, we appear to have an early spring this year and honestly, the grass is gonna need cut next weekend if these 60 degree days hang around. But they have three in stock right now with the B&S.

My question to you all is; does this sound like let's make a deal now and move one in stock, or has the B&S really made improvements with the "Briggs & Stratton Commercial Turf Series"?

The Ferris IS600 is my #1 choice this is the only dealer within a reasonable drive.

carb kit

New to the forum and feeling my way around. I need a carb kit for my R8237, carb # 682568. Any ideas where to find one or maybe a part number?

2014 simplicity Broadmoor update

Spring is here got her out, and cleaned up...removing the deck was not as easy as they say it is but not to bad. Have 65 hours on it now...checked the oil after warming the mower up, had a white pasty substance in the fill tube, I understand this is from moisture commonly referred to as blow by...wiped it out and changed the oil...will try to warm the oil longer during start ups...also noticed a couple of very small spots that look like paint bubbling on the metal foot rest...cleaned up the deck both on top and below...grease everything and re-attached deck...it went on easier than it came off...still concerned about the Briggs engine...all in all its been a good mower...I have found that turn around on hills is difficult...often have to lift the deck to get up the hill as the full width roller prevents me from going up hill (diffLock would be great here)...also, wish the deck lifted further from the ground when not in use as it drags across the stones in my drive and often catches on debris. Still wish I had power steering, and now differential lock...after review of price points I wonder if a john Deere would have been better

Help

I have a 100 series john deer mower and its shuts off when I engage the cutting blades

Dead battery

I purchased a 42" Hustler Raptor late last year and left it sitting for 1.5-2 months and the battery died. I jumped the battery and used the mower for about 30 minutes and then put it up. A week later i tried to start to start it again and the battery was dead. Does the battery need to be replaced? What charger do you guys recommend for my mower? This is my first mower so I'm not used to trickle charging my battery during the winter. TIA

STARTING PROBLEM SOLVED

I had an aggravating problem that my Gravely Zero-turn rider developed after only several years of use when I had to turn the key on & off about 30+ times before my Koehler engine finally started! ~ Thought it was low amperage and bought a new battery with 340 CC Amps, but the SAME issue persisted. ~ Thoughts of a bad starter or solenoid crossed my mind but upon checking the two spade wires that trigger the solenoid I removed them and found RUST on the contacts. Using a stainless steel brush and some electrician's corrosion-proof grease on both contact lugs resulted in my engine starting quickly & strongly with the first key turn!

Bottom Line: WHY doesn't the manufacturer of these high-end mowers do us all a favor and use corrosion-inhibiting grease on all the electrical contacts AT THE FACTORY so we consumers don't have to go nuts trying to figure out these problems a few years after buying their machines?!!!
