B&S Model 44 V-Twin engines w/ same displacement but different horsepower - ???

Hello. I have a John Deere LA120 riding mower with a Briggs Model 44 V-Twin that is rated at 21 horsepower. I've always felt like the mower could use a little bit more power. Just for kicks, I was doing some poking around online tonight and noticed that the next "bigger" John Deere in this series was the LA140 that was rated at 23 horsepower. Digging a little deeper, I noticed that both engines have a displacement of 724 cc. And then I noticed that they have identical bore and stroke dimensions as well.

Does anyone know what the actual difference is between these engines? Is the 21 horsepower version just have slightly lower compression, different carbs, or maybe just detuned in some way? It's obvious where I'm going with this - I want to unleash those 2 extra mystery ponies!!

Toro 22'' FWD Recycler tranny rebuilt, still wont work. Locks up...

Hi folks!

Im a new member, long time lurker.

I picked up a used toro 22" recycler Model 20005 for $25.00 the other day. Self propel didnt work. I opened up the gear case and saw both gears were worn out completely. Ordered new gears, installed them then only one wheel would engage fully. Both wheels have all there gears, and they are not worn down. Gear pinions are also fine.

Also, I can not push the mower forward as the front wheels lock up. However if i take the belt cover off and pull the pulley and tranny assembly towards the back it will unlock the front wheels.

What the heck is going on here? also has new belt.

thanks for your help!
michael

John Deere with Kawasaki FC420V

Trying to help my 80 year old uncle get his John Deere mower running again.
It has a Kawasaki FC420V engine.
It had a new coil two years ago.
No spark this Spring and we determined the ignitor was bad.
Ordered a new OEM igniter / module.
My uncle installed and he said it ran great for 1/2 hour or
less and he shut it off, and was never able to get it
started again.
It now "pops" in the carburetor and flames are visible in the
carb intake (with air cleaner off).
Spark at plug appears to be good.
New spark plug was tried.
Flywheel key looks good.
It has 118 psi compression, so it can't be an intake valve
"hung up".
Ideas appreciated!
Tom

Hello from MS

I am new to this site and just wanted to say hello. I am 62 and mow 3 acres with our 12 yr. old Cub Cadet 2166 42" cut tractor that is still going strong. I am thinking of upgrading to reduce mowing and trimming time and am glad to have found this site with all the informative reviews from tips from fellow operators. Thanks, RP.:newhere:

Hello from MS

Tight engine

Greetings from a new user. The grandchildren gave me an older mower to fix. B&S 1 cyl vertical 17 hp. I have had it apart twice, actually had it running once and now it is back to the original problem after I installed a new intake valve (because of some spitting out the carb when running- the valve did have a defective seat ).

The engine turns fairly freely with the plug removed. With plug installed , it is tight on compression (maybe too tight ) but then gets equally tight about 1/2 way down on the power stroke. On the last assembly, the crank only turned freely, then the crank and cam turned freely, then the crank and cam and valves turned freely until the plug was installed. The started seems OK, but would not get over TDC

Another clue. The original problem was a broken intake push rod. Broken end never found.

Any help would be appreciated. David

Lawn Boy 10324 Extremely High RPMs

Hello all!
About a year ago, I obtained a Lawn Boy 10324 from my neighbor who was moving. When I got the mower it was incredibly dirty so I cleaned it to the best of my ability. This included taking the carb off, cleaning it and hosing down the deck. After I "cleaned" the carb and put it all back together, it gave me a hassle starting, so I put it aside. Fast forward a year to today. I decided to give cleaning the carb another go and completely disassembled it. Removed all the jets from the plastic, the white "rpm lever" that controls the butterfly, then cleaned out all the jets and plastic by blowing compressed air through the holes. I put it all back together and viola! The mower starts. But now it runs at what seems like superspeed (almost like I started a chainsaw and kept it running at full boar). The throttle control (lever on the handle to control engine speed) seems to do nothing, and adjusting the click wheel on the white "rpm lever" does not slow it down either. I am a little nervous to use the mower at what seems like a high rpm (in fact, I don't let it run for more than 30 seconds after start).

I checked over my work and the float moves freely up and down, and when the carb is up-side down it sits even with the plastic housing, and the linkage for the throttle control is connected and moves properly. The only possible culprit i can think of is the spring on the "rpm lever" on top of the carb. The spring was moving freely when I took the carb apart, and (thinking this was not supposed to be) I bent the end that sits inside the plastic click wheel around the hole it sits in (so it wouldn't come loose). Other than that, I re-assembled the carb the exact same way I took it apart.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions, please share them, I really like this mower and it would be a shame to trash it (can't afford to have an actual dealer fix it).

Repairs Transmission problems on a 110

Hi, I have a 12 yr old 110 that's been taken care of very well. Last fall I noticed some whining coming from the rear end, actually it's been doing it on inclines for a few years. This spring I got it out for clean up & it will barely pull anything. Engine runs like a top. My neighbors used it to dethatch their yards & said it wouldn't pull it very easy. I got on just to mow & noticed the first thing that the speed wasn't there. I went down my incline & it rolled down really fast & barely made it up the incline.
I have read the tranny goes on these & there is a newer tranny that's being installed for a $1000.There's also replacement parts, but I really don't have time to pull the tranny. There's no place that I can see that I can add fluid to it either. Any suggestions? Thanks

23yr old Honda Harmony 215 rebuild or replace?

My reliable Harmony seems a little tired. The deck and the other parts are all still okay. But the engine is using oil and vibrates like crazy. It actually shakes less when the blades are spinning. It's having trouble with tallish grass too.
I had the carb clean up a couple of years ago and they did some other maintenance also. I also think the blade brake clutch material is gone. The mower was the gxv140 motor that is rated the same as the new gcv160 only the new one isn't commercial grade.

I really like the blade brake system so that limits the choices of new machines. The replacement for the Harmony is $700, a little expensive, and no longer has the commercial grade motor. I love the fact that I never have to worry about the deck rusting and it stays pretty clean.

I was also looking at the Toro 20376. It has an aluminum deck, blade brake and a 5 year warranty. The Toro txp engine seems to be the old Honda gxv design and has more power.

Is it possible to rebuild the Harmony? Will it cost just about as much as a new mower? What do the experts think?

Thanks

Belt slipped off Husqvarna

I was cutting leaves and they got up in the belt path and made it slip off. I checked the owner's manual for how to change the belt. My belt is fine. Do I really have to remove the deck to get the belt back on? Seems like there would be an easier way. Thanks.

Hydraulic Problem

I have a Toro 255 Z mower. During use, the right side wheel lost power. Obvious oil leaking from pump. Disassembled pump and it was destroyed inside. Installed new pump; changing fluid and priming pump as required. 20w-50 oil used. New pump did good for a couple of yards and then started chattering and eventually lost power. Took pump apart. inspected. no obvious damage noted. Reinstalled. Now feels like no resistance or oil moving through pump. Checked all the obvious, (air in line, by pass valve). Could it be the wheel motor now? What does one of those act like? The new pump cost $500 and the company will not warranty it because a certified hydro tech from their company did not install it. Please help.

185 John Deere won't crank

Pulled it out of the garage and it started fine. Turned it off and put gas in and when I tried to start it again nothing. Changed the solenoid, disabled the seat switch and still nothing not even a click. dash lights work. PTO switch clicks when I turn it on and off. Battery tests fine and the switch is getting juice to the solenoid. Any ideas?

New Lawn Mower Won't Start

Hello. I am a new member and I have an odd question. I purchased a Craftsman 625 series Rotary lawn mower model #917.378910 last winter. It has the Briggs & Stratton 6.25 Gold series engine. It has the one pull start system so there is no primer bulb. It was brand new in the box stored in my garage. I took it out Thursday to use it and put the oil in and fresh gas. Would not start. When I finally did get it started it ran fine. I cut the grass stopped it and put more gas in it and she fired right up. Tested it Friday to see if it would start and had the same issues. Put carb cleaner into the carb but that was no help. Sears referred me to a service shop through them but they are 5 weeks behind. Anyone any issues with this model, or any clue what I might try? Thanks! Not sure if it should go here or the Craftsman Forum so I put it on both.

Starter issue

Got a free 917376741 with broke push bar. Owner said it ran fine. Battery is gone but starter remains. The pushbutton/key switch is kinda broke so I unplugged the harness. I jumped the starter and it cranks fine but I have no spark. There is an interlock switch next to blade brake mechanism on side of motor. The leads run from the starter harness to switch. Is this to prevent cranking if blade brake is on? Any chance the wiring would affect no spark issue?

Hustler Raptor Limited 52" Deck Adjsutment

I recently got me a Hustler Raptor Limited 52" mower. I love it. I cut my yard for the 1st time and it looked great. But looking at it closely, I noticed that at the lowest level "A", it was not cutting as low as my other riding mower. Is there a way to adjust the deck to where the height adjustments are .5" lower? where the lowest "A" is at 1.0" not at "1.5"?

John Deere 757 Ztrax - any thoughts

Looking at purchasing an 08 John Deere 757, Kawasaki V-Twin, 25 hp w/60 inch deck. It has 270 hours, new blades and is in very good shape. They are asking $5,600 which seems reasonable.

Is there anything with this model that I should be wary of? I have looked at new units, but a similar model would be $8K. My use is purely residential, about 2.5 acres.

Turf Tiger oil change

Needing to do an oil change on my TT with Kaw 29 dfi engine. We just moved and I can't find my manual at the moment. What oil do these engines call for? I bought it last year and it was serviced before I bought it, so this will be my first service on it, would have liked to have done it before mowing season started but been in the process of moving for a couple months. Any quick help on this would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to get it changed. Have filter already, just not sure on oil.

Why no gear transmissions?

When I was looking at new riders everything was hydro. Not many models left out there with a stick. Understandably the hydro has its advantages with mowing speed and versatility, but probably would have bought a six shift if they had them in the larger deck models. Just something new to get used to, soon I should learn to stop pushing the brake and grabbing for the phantom shifter knob:confused2:

VLV60 seems hard to turn over by hand

I am working on an Ariens walk behind for a neighbor and it has been quite a puzzle. I was told it would not start and would kick back when you attempted to start it. It has a Tecumseh VLV60.

I removed all the tin, cleaned the carb, found that the idler for the drive belt tensioner had a seized bearing, and the spark plug cap was out of sorts. I also learned that I need a special tool (or do I?) to remove the flywheel to see if the key is sheared. I tried a jawed puller hoping it would just pop off but I was afraid to put too much pressure on it with the jawed puller so I am open for any ideas as to any other way for me to remove the flywheel.

Anyhow, my real question is about the overall health of the engine. I noticed turning the flywheel by hand with the plug removed that this engine seems stiff. I can rotate is counterclockwise somewhat easily but clockwise it seems to drag. It doesn't feel coarse or rough but it is just generally harder to turn than most engines I have dealt with. It also has a squeak sometimes that I can only describe as maybe a dry crank seal rubbing against the crank. Any thoughts? I haven't seen a Tecumseh since I was a kid and never one like this but it seems odd to me that it is so difficult to turn over. I did start it at one point after I cleaned the carb and it seemed to run okay but after shutting it off for a few minutes, I couldn't get it to start again. I'm fairly certain the timing is off but what about being hard to turn by hand? Is that the nature of this beast or is it damaged?

Also, any brilliant ideas for removing the flywheel without ordering the special tools?

Thanks in advance for any input. I just found this forum and I'm sure I'll be spending lots of time on here.

Run it or Trade it

Question to commercial operators.

On zero turn mowers and other at is a sizable investment.

Is it more profitable to trade Zero Turns at 2 years whe the warranty is going out and replace them with new ones or run them till the wheels run off of them and keep rebuilding/repairing them till they are completely worn out?

I have asked that question to numerous people. Both schools of thought have good arguments. Give me input as to which you do and why.

Cub Cadet Pro Z 100

Hello everyone; first time poster here.

I just bought a Cub Cadet Pro Z 160L despite it being brand new on the market (went against my better judgement and bought it without reviews...they don't exist as far as I can tell). Also, I don't think Cub Cadets track record is all that great. I've used a Scag Tiger Cub for many years with almost no qualms, however I've always thought of brand loyalty as a fault...

Anyway, I've only logged 5 or 6 hours on it and I have to say this thing is a beast. It's gotta be one of the heavier mowers in its class. It's thick all around; and with the hydro gear 3400's on it it can move all that weight too. It's got a 27hp Kohler EFI which I'm worried about (heard mixed feelings on it), but by and large I'm pretty satisfied so far.

My question is, does anyone else own one of these yet? Or have heard of any issues etc? Some reassurance my impulse buy won't become a disaster would be awesome lol.

Thanks!

I mow approx. 2 acres with alot of trees and planting areas in SW Wisconsin. Currently I use a JD 445 that I am thinking about retiring to snow throwing duty and another smaller property I have in town. There are a lot of pine trees with very low branches and the JD can't get me close enough to eliminate the need for trimming. 2012 Hustler FasTrack SuperDuty 54" - Retailer won't tell me mower blades I can use

Hi all. I need to know what blades I can use on my 54" FasTrack SuperDuty (model year 2012, model # 930149). I have been given the run-around by Hustler and by the retailer from whom we purchased our mower. They will not tell us the part number/blade type that is suitable for our mower. The owner's manual says the mower requires a specific blade and to "contact the retailer" to find out which one. So I'm being held hostage. The retailer is too far from me to drive to at this point. I need to find these blades somewhere online or in a store closer to home. Can someone please help with recommendations of online locations (if there are any) to purchase them as well? Our blades are ruined and we are being overtaken by our lawn as we continue to look for a solution. Many many thanks.

hustler raptor 42

I bought a hustler raptor 42 last year and added the mulching kit and it strips between the 2 blades everytime I mow. It also doesn't clean out under the deck until I hit the end of every row. Ive tried lowering the deck, raising the deck. going at a crawl and going faster nothing seems to help. I've even tried to replace the blades with gator g6 blades and nothing. It also doesn't cut very good where the front tires push down the grass in front of the deck. I am really getting frustrated with it to the point of looking for a different mower. I hate having to mow my whole yard 2 times every time I mow.

LX255 K62A transmission issue

I just picked up an LX255 on the cheap, the seller said the transmission needed to be replaced. He thought the cylinder blocks were bad. I've replaced cylinder blocks on a K62A transmission and I have a good used spare cylinder block so I was hoping if that was the problem I might get lucky and be able to repair it without much money. When I picked it up he said it would not move at all in forward or reverse. That made me suspicious because my experience with a bad cylinder block was that it would move at first but as the transmission warmed up the pistons could not pump the thinning oil, resulted in a loss of power. It didn't seem right that there was no movement at all in both forward and reverse, meaning both blocks would be equally bad seemed unlikely.

I got it home and started to check it out. Pulling the hydro disengage lever allowed the wheels to spin freely, pushing it in locked them. I jacked up the rear end to see if the wheels would spin at all with no resistance. Nothing. I dropped it back to the ground. I pressed the forward pedal and gave it a push to assist and felt it pulling itself forward very slowly. Nothing in reverse, even with an assist. I sat on it and pressed the forward pedal, nothing. I lunged forward and heard a mechanical noise and the transmission jerked as it engaged and began going forward, like something "caught". It took about 30 feet and it was moving at full speed. Still nothing in reverse. Whenever I stop and want to move forward I have to give a little heave forward and the same noise every time followed by forward movement up to full speed. Once it warmed up it would go to full speed as soon as I gave it a lunge forward, it only took 30 feet to get up to speed when I first started it. When it starts moving forward it runs out with no problems at all, until you stop again.

What could be "catching" when I give it an assist forward, jerking and allowing the transmission to engage? Still nothing at all in reverse. Where would you guys start to troubleshoot? I'm doubtful that it has anything to do with the cylinder blocks, what should I be looking for?

Craftsman DYT4000 seat switch

Had a problem recently with the old craftsman. Last year when I engaged the blades there would be a delay before the PTO kicked in and sometimes would not engage at all. This year upon starting, after shifting the [manual] transmission and letting out the clutch, the engine would die. Someone told me to check the seat switch, thought it worth a try.
I took the switch out from under the seat, sat on the mower and using my thumb to press down on the button, started the engine and let out the clutch. Went though the motions and the switch worked intermittently .Went to sears and bought a new switch ($12) and it solved both problems. Guess the switch was slowly going bad. This fix has probably been posted a few times but may be worth repeating, because at first I thought the mower had more serious problems.

Kawasaki 19-hp FH580V engine suddenly started running rough when hot.

I have a Kawasaki 19-hp FH580V engine on a Graveley Promaster 44Z mower. Both have worked flawlessly for eight years.
Suddenly, the engine has started running rough after running for approximately 25 minutes. If I let it cool down, it runs fine again while mowing for another 25 minutes or so. I repeated this pattern three times.

I think the fuel is fine. The mower has two tanks. The hoses hat draw fuel from the tanks don't appear to be cracked and the screens are clean. The air cleaner is clean, though I plan to replace it. Fuel is visible in the in-line fuel filter, but I plan to replace that also.
I haven't checked the plugs.

Could the problem be a coil or a poor electrical connection or ground?

Would a fuel pump problem come and go like this?

Koehler ch15 on cub 2155 smoking looking for rebuild advice.

Been looking through the manual to familiarize myself with this job it looks like I will need at least rings my question is can I get to this from the top when I take the head off or do I have to take off the crank cover on the side to get to the piston I know I'll be able to see the cylinder once I remove the head and I am used to working on ATV and motorcycle engines but have a separate bottomend the crank . Is this ch15 one where I will need to remove the rod from the bottom to get the piston out. This is smoking like a chimney and using about a quart per mow so I'm fairly positive it's rings and possibly bore.

Pony Bumper Lifting via Winch?

I'd like to be able to lift my Pony using a front bumper and
an available winch mounted on top of a steel shipping container.

The purpose would be for changing blades, cleaning, & other
maintenance and service.

I'm guessing the generic bumpers are spot-welded & not strong
enough for this.

Would a bumper built from 1/8 angle iron (bolted or welded together)
be strong enough?

Thanks - David

Briggs Quantum Shooting White Smoke everywhere upon startup

I recently acquired this Briggs Quantum engine mounted on a new Poulan deck. I removed the air filter (which wasn't that dirty) and air filter cover to get to the carb. It appears very clean. I filled the tank (it was empty and dry) with fresh gas and attempted to start it. It didn't do anything. Then I sprayed quick start into the carb. It fires once, and shoots white smoke out from everywhere. Out the muffler, out the carb, and I'm assuming out of the head gasket. My question is, since it appears that it's coming from that general area, can I assume that the head gasket is blown? Would a compression test confirm this? I have a compression tester, but I haven't checked this engine yet. The engine is from 1988, so it's certainly used. Oh and by the way, the spark plug looks like it is also from 1988. The hex part is completely rusted. I wouldn't think changing it at this point would do any good, I think I have a bigger problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Need large mower for slight hillside... up and down mowing possible

We have a hillside in front of our house. It's probably about 5 acres and slopes vary from 10 to possibly as much as 25 degrees, but mostly just 15/20. It is possible for me to mow up and down rather than side hill. My husband wants to get a 60" Bad boy ZT. Would this be a good choice? From my researching on the net, the Cub Cadet ZTR is supposed to be good for mowing slopes.

Mowing up and down the hill is fine but the mower just needs the power to get uphill and I need decent traction for when I turn around to head back down. Any advice is appreciated. This is our first cutting season on this property and I'm using an old Murray 42" that was left here. It's a nightmare.

how do i get more life out of my jacobsen cutting reel cylinders? (model: LF4677)

Husqvarna YT46LS tires?

I have a new Husqvarna, I like the mower but it rides kind of rough and I have a bad back. My yard may not be the smoothest but had no problem with a previous mower. I did let some air out of the back tires, did not help that much. Thought about getting wider rear rims and tires, 10" wide used to be the standard. Other Suggestions?

Hello from Virginia

I just joined the forum and have purchased an Hustler Raptor SD 46. I should be getting it Friday and I am really looking forward to it. It will be my first ZT and I wish I hadn't waited so long to get one. We are supposed to have rain all week here so I don't know when I will get to try it out.

John Deere D 110 engine issue

Was working fine then engine slowed and stalled. Difficult to restart and will run at slow rpm even with accelerator lever on full speed. Drained and changed the gas fuel, changed fuel filter, removed and gaped spark plug. Same result. Also when cranking if engine has stopped in compression position the starter motor will not crank the engine. I must hand crank till it reaches neutral position then use the starter to crank. The spark plug appears to be sparking when removed and engine cranked. Wondering now about the fuel pump. The new filter has very little fuel in it - about 1/4 inch of fuel in the bottom. Also perhaps something plugging up the line from the tank. Looking for suggestions what test next. Jim

Cub Cadet 1170 Belt, Transmission issues.

I have my neighbors little Cub Cadet 1170 riding mower in the shop. It has an automatic transmission, but not a hydro stat. Its like a snowmobile clutch type set up.

I got it because it was jerking when driving, like the drive belt was slipping, but it also does not disengage when letting off the pedal. It creeps slowly with your foot off the pedal. I replaced both drive belts, they were original, with no change. It actually might be a little worse now. The clutch is clean and moves freely.

I am at a loss what to do to remedy this. Any tips for me? Thanks in advance.

No power when I turn the key on while pushing down the left break pedal. Plus the hydrostatic by-pass rod is not allowing the rear wheels to move. I had to lift the rear end to move mover into garage. I cannot find any fuse anywhere on the wiring harness as stated in the manual.

Changing fly wheel fan on JD Z225 w/Briggs and Stratton

I broke the teeth off of my fly wheel fan due to not replacing the engine cover properly after cleaning out a mouse nest. I bought a replacement fan and now I'm having trouble getting the old fan off. I've "u tubed" it and they say to use a pipe wrench to secure the drive pulley in order to remove the bolt holding the fan in place. Problem being, there isn't enough spacing to get a wrench in to secure the pulley (or shaft driving pulley). I don't want to damage anything further by jamming something in to keep the fly wheel from turning so the bolt will come out. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Won't run unless choked!

I own a Porter Cable PWH2500 Pressure washer. It has a Honda GCV160 5.5 engine on it. Not sure the carb make yet.

The unit is not used much (probably 5-10 days a year) but has always had gas stabilizer in it and I drain the tank when I am done using it.

The unit starts fine when fully choked. After letting it warm up for a minute or two, I attempt to take the choke off.

The unit will run about 1/3 - 1/2 choked, but dies it I try to remove it completely. So, the unit runs, but at much less capacity (power) that it should.

I am assuming this is a carburetor problem where it's not getting enough fuel once the choke is removed and is running so lean, it stalls almost immediately.

So, several questions:

1. Does this diagnosis seems correct?
2. If so, does it need a carb rebuild or a new carb?
3. If not, what else should I be checking?

Thanks!

Frankenstein project in progress model 20470 super recycler

So i started off with a 1988 Toro 21" model 20622 and ended up getting frustrated with that stupid Minuki carb. Long story short, i love the look and details of the older Toro's so i stripped the 20622 with parts and pieces i liked and transferred them to another Toro i had laying around. The 20470 is a 1997 super recycler i believe with a 6hp motor. I like the mulching capabilities of this mower, i just hate the look of the motor. It seems to sit really tall on the deck. Anyways i transferred the handle and control panel so far and i think it looks great! I plan on getting commercial tires and a commercial gas tank. Of course its not a commercial model but that doesn't mean i can't make it look like one lol I am also putting a fresh coat of black on the plastic parts. The red on the deck is still good and will clean up nice. I can't wait to see how it looks when i am done with it. Thanks for looking and i will keep updating this thread until i am finished with it.

Oil Leak

I own a Craftsman rider with the following Briggs and Stratton engine:

Briggs and Stratton I/C Gold 13HP
Model: 28M707
Type: 0142-01
Code: 9507194A

It's leaking oil. Possibly from both the sump pump gasket and shaft seal. I need to clean it up and try to pinpoint exactly where it's leaking.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the service manual for this engine?

It looks like a fairly easy job to replace that seal and gasket (at least from the research I've done so far).

Is it an easy job (I am pretty mechanically inclined and have done a lot of work on my cars (replace A/C system, power steering pump, wheel bearings, water pump, etc.).

Thanks in advance!!!

Mulching 2003 Toro Time Cutter 42"

Hi All -

I have a 2003 Toro Time Cutter 42", model 74330, and am looking for a mulch kit. I went to the Toro parts website and when I'm looking at parts based on serial number it gives me P/N 131-4182 for the mulch/recycle kit. However, this part number says it fits a 2015 and newer.

First question, would that kit fit my mower? Second question, if it doesn't, does anyone know a good source for this kit or an after market one?

Thanks,

Darryl

Craftsman 143.434332 Questions Drive & Engine (Legacy Mower)

Hey all. New member, here.

I have a Craftsman 22" self-propelled model# 917.373680 with a Tecumseh (Sears-branded) engine model# 143.434332 (yeah, I know. But this thing has been a beast since I bought it. It's an old reliable friend.)

Anyway, two questions:

1. The front drive wheels won't disengage. This isn't a problem from a usage standpoint but moving it around the property to where I need it is a bit of a bitch. I've checked pretty much everything and tightened here and cleaned there, but I can't release those front wheels. It seems to be a problem within the gearbox itself, but I cracked that open to examine the "innards" and everything seems to be good in there, as well. Little or no obvious wear, which is what I'd expect from a sealed assembly.

So, am I missing something stupid? My first inclination is to reboot, but there's nothing in the troubleshooting section about that.<grin>

2. Engine is sluggish on start (I ran it dry last fall before storing and I have new gas in it now) and muffler is smoking when I turn off mower. For the better part of it's life, this engine was truly "one-pull start." Last year I replaced the carb because of scale and the fact I stripped the carb bowl nut. Today I put in a new plug, checked the air gap on the magneto (armature/coil/whatever), checked the wire. Once the engine fired, there was the usual "spring smoke dump" from the muffler and everything seemed OK, so I shut it down. Now it looks like residual oil burning inside the muffler and I noticed oil below the muffler on the drive cover.

That's never happened before, and I'm wondering if its just my mower coming out of it's seasonal coma or if I should be concerned.

Sorry for the long post, but I'd figure I'd make it top-heavy with info, instead of everyone posting back and forth over several weeks.

Thanks in advance for your expertise. Regards,

slanej

Appreciate any help!

Advise Needed For New Gas Push Mower

Your advise is welcome.

Looking to buy a Kubota Kommander Z122E

I was just about the pull the trigger on the Kommander Z122E, when the dealer told me it had a Briggs engine. I had spoken with a couple of folks in the lawn mower sales and repair business that told me to stay away from the Briggs. Everyone told me they had valve problems. What's up? Are they any good or should I buy something with a Kawasaki or Kohler? I have about an acre to mow and don't mow that much as it's at my farm. Typically, I have to use the shredder behind my Deere to cut it first, then jump on the mower to finish it off. I probably would not use it 15 hours a year. But if I spend the money for a Kubota, I want it last a very, very long time.

Cordless electric mowers - RC model hobby connection

There appear to be a number of these on the market thanks to the growth of the radio controlled model hobbyists, techies all, and their vision which has grabbed hold of battery electric power for their models. My interest is in their potential to measure the effects of better rotary mower blade designs via cordless electric mowers. Most cordless electric mowers share very standard blade designs with their combustion powered "brethren". My in use removable SLA battery powered Neuton rotary mower offers a unique opportunity to wire in one of the likes of this to measure the energy demand various alternate blade designs impose. As DC electric motor and battery systems evolved, they became the logical alternative to small combustion power for RC models. Hobbyists had to have on board batteries and motors for the combustion powered RC models to operate them under radio control anyway! These arose to help them measure and maximize the efficiency of their power systems. In the last few years these have come down in price by 2/3 or more. Lucky me!

Dixon SpeedZTR 44 Safety Switch issue

My Dixon SpeedZTR just shut down while mowing. Everything seemed okay, it just stopped as if I had stood up and the seat switch killed the motor. When I tried to start it, it would not engage the solenoid, again as if the seat switch was operated. I put it in the shop, tested the seat switch, it was fine. I took the turning arm safety switches off, noticed the connectors were filled with dust, so blew them clean and reconnected them. It started right up. Yay! problem solved. I put everything back together, went back into the field mowed for three or four minutes, boom! same thing. Crap! Pulled it back in the shop, removed the plugs from the brake safety switches, blew them clean, hooked 'em back up. I noticed that the seat safety switch produced an open circuit when it was operated, so I just unplugged it for the test. Hit the key, started right up. Yay! I put everything back together, (including seat switch) hopped in the seat, hit the key - Nothing! Back to square one. The arm and brake safety switches test okay on the meter. I am thinking either there is a wiring issue (broken or loose) that I fixed temporarily when I messed with the arm switches, or perhaps a bad clutch switch.

Two questions: First, are there any safety switches beside the 5 on the seat, arms and brake that I missed?

Second, Are the symptoms described indicative of a bad clutch switch?

Thanks in advance,

Sned

New project - Dixie Chopper (First task, what engine/carburetor/ other information)

Hey all,

I have a Dixie Chopper that has been sitting in my backyard for a couple of years and I'm just getting out to figure out if I can get it running (should be a reasonable thing to do). The hydraulic on one side had gone out and so I received this mower from an employer. Now that it has been sitting for some time, it has carburetor issues.

I am starting with the carburetor first. My task is to get the needle unstuck (from the seat, it's completely closed up) and then clean it inside and out. I'm thinking about using B-12 Chemtool to soak it in because it's what I've seen work best on carb crud. If that doesn't work, I will use heat to expand the metal and allow the needle to move; then continue with a thorough cleaning. The torch is not available to me at this juncture, but it will be in about a week. If the B-12 doesn't unstick it then I'll use heat.

I am in great need of finding manuals/models or information about any and all parts on this mower. As, I'll be needing to buy parts. I would like to know exactly which carburetor I have so I can find a kit for it. Also, engine and other information specific to the hydraulic system would be much appreciated.

The only information I can give you guys is this:

1) Model No. 0050591 (Found this on the engine)

2) A sticker on the front of the mower says "XT 3200 Quad Loop"

Any and all advice is much appreciated and I will look into any ideas that I haven't thought of or tried. I've contacted a store, their number was on a sticker on the ride, but they don't seem very helpful, or intelligent... Maybe he just didn't understand what I was saying or was too busy to help me. Anyway, I have always had great luck on forums so I just thought I'd try my luck with you helpful gents.

Regards,

Evan

Mower bogging problem

Hey Guys
Here's my problem. I have a Toro Time cutter zero turn mower that's got me stumped. The guy that brought it to me described the problem as the engine cutting out and stumbling under load. He stated that he replaced the carb and stated that the problem improved but he could not get the carb adjusted to the point to take the stumbling out of it. When I started checking the mower it wild cut out on flat ground even when the mower was not under load. He replaced the fuel filter at time of carb change. It is spitting back through the carb also but intermittently. It's not smoking. I pulled the new carb back down ( to assure that all was well with the float and needle and seat). The carb looked fine. Also, the muffler was broken at the exhaust neck and it had caused damage to the spark plug boot and sparkplug/coil wire. So I'm thinking that since it's an intermittent problem, maybe the coil wire was breaking down. I replaced it with a new coil since it needed to be repaired anyway. Still, same problem. I adjusted the valves thinking the spitting back problem could be the problem. The valves were out but not by much. The engine seems to have great compression. So I have attacked fuel, spark and compression. Now where do I go? The mower info is below. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Dump or keep client

I got this client. Mowing the lawns for his appartment complexes I make good money. They are all in the same vicinity and easy to do. I also mow the lawn at his house. Problem is he doesn't want to pay my hourly rate for extra work (leaf cleanups, etc.). He sometimes wants to knock 15$ off my hourly rate and says that I charged that before. It's not true and I have the invoices to prove it. I am debating on dumping him or not. I just think it is a sign of disrescpect to not want to pay for my labour. On the flip side, doing the appartment complexes brings me more clients around there and his house is on my street and I do many other on my street. I am worried that if people see that I stopped mowing his lawn, they will think bad things about me. Even worse, he could give me a bad reputation, etc. I am stuck in this situation. I am on the verge of dumping him.

TroyBilt Junior Rototiller will not rev up

Hi guys- I have an old Troybilt Junior Rototiller that dates back probably to the 1980's. PTO engagement blows fuse

I have a craftsman pro series 24hp 46" riding mower (model 247.204420). When I took it out of winter storage, I replaced the battery, and mistakingly connected the battery incorrectly (positive to the negative post, and ground to the positive post). After failing to be able to start my tractor, I recognized my mistake, and correctly connected the battery. The tractor starts fine, but as soon as I engage the PTO switch, the fuse blows. I realize I have probably damaged something by reversing polarity when I connected the battery the wrong way. My question is, what do I trouble shoot, and replace first? Thank you.

need some educating on how ignitions work nowadays

I was trying to start my mower and it won't fire up at all. Not even with starting fluid sprayed in the breather. So I pulled the plug and spun the crank a few times and nothing, no spark at all. I had a spare coil so I changed it out but still nothing. So I figured it must be the ignition module. And I'm not so old to think it had points and a condensor. Anyway, I got the flywheel off expecting to find a module of some sort. There is nothing there other than the flywheel and coil. How do these work nowadays? I'm at a loss as to why it isn't firing and am just standing staring at it. Were the old points/condensor and later, capacative discharge ignition systems just for show? I'm about ready to bolt an electric motor on the mower bed and drag a cord behind me!

This is a Toro self-propelled push mower that has been converted to run off propane because of the crappy gasoline we have to use now.

Thanks for any help,
Alan

Briggs and Stratton 1800 PSI power washer

Please excuse if this is on the wrong Thread but I figured I would ask this since it is a Briggs and Stratton.

I purchased a new 020559 1800 PSI Electric Power Washer about 2 years ago. Basically used it 3 times.
This year I went to use it and found water flowing from inside the pump area.
Taking it apart I saw the High Pressure hose broken away from the pump. I thought oh, no big deal, I will just order one.RIGHT
Absolutely NO support from Briggs and Stratton. They do not have parts for this model. I even called Sears Parts Direct and found their model that was this Briggs unit. They also do not have parts for this.
One person told me these are disposable. REALLY? I paid 300.00 for this.
Maybe I am one of the few hard working people that does not have a disposable income.
Does anyone have a contact to get this part?
No Part Number because there is no parts list.
I have attached what this part looks like.
ANY assistance would be appreciated.

Engine Motor will turn over and run but will not restart after mowing the yard.

First time posting and I hope someone here can help me with my mystery problem.

Craftsman 917.258671
Briggs & Straton 19.5
Model 42E707
Type 1631-01
Code 9706065B

Problem: I am able to start the mower when cold. Once it warms up, if you decide to stop the mower for any reason, it will turn over but it will not restart until it has sat for several hours. My local Land and Coats advised it might be the Coil which I purchased and replaced. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. I have used this mower for years and this is the first problem I have had with it.

Has anyone else experienced an issue like this in the past? I have seen many people reference that the values could need adjustment on OHV motors but from my research I do not see where I have a rocker arm to adjust on the 42E707.

If anyone else has experienced an issue like this, please let me know what you did to fix your issue.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

FH430V Air Cleaner Sealing

Recently purchased a mower with this engine. When I pulled the air filter there was evidence of dust on the carb side of the filter. When installing the new filter I found the imprint from the sealing ring on the air cleaner element is not very deep. Is there a better fix than gluing the filter to the carb side of the housing? The parts guy told me the air cleaner system on these engines was a "weak link".
Thanks

Hustler Rapture SD 60 Blades

This is my second season with my SD 60 mower and I was not very happy with the cut quality. Blades of grass not being cut. Just looking like crap after and going over an area a second time to get the cut cleaned up.
After doing some research and visiting my hustler dealer. I told him what was going on and he was "surprised". I said I wanted a set of high lift blades. ". He said really, they have then installed from the factory. (Not). We went out to a new unit and sure enough, medium lift blades installed (totally suck). He said we have problems with the "48 and 52"units but not the 60. I went ahead and purchased the blades and wow, what a difference. I can't even believe what they pick up and cut and discharge. Before, they wouldn't even lift up a small stick from tree and now it " chop chop chop". Dust is almost twice as bad. It's a completely different mower. if you want a better cut drop $60 on some blades and cut away.

belt size

I own a 2003 721D and the hydro belts shucked on me out in the vineyard. I need the size of the 38193 belt so I might get a local auto supply store replacement so I can get the mower out of the field quickly. I can get back ups from Grasshopper later. I just need some replacements now. I think they are 1/2 x 33 but I am not sure.

B&D CMM1200 charger plug

The My CMM1200 battery-operated mower has a 24V charger with a 3-pronged plug but the charger is dead. I kept the two 12V batteries charged over the winter by removing them and individually charging with a 12V maintainer charger (as used for motorcycles). I now found another 24V charger for a different mower but it only has 2 prongs. I would like to cut off the original 3-prong plug from the defective charger and connect it to the cable of the the good 2-prong charger. Does anyone know what that 3rd prong is for or if it's even needed?

Troy-Bilt BP25 Blower Repair Help - Cuts off after 5 seconds

Need some advice on my sturdy little backpack blower. It will start, run for about 5 seconds then cut off. I can prime it again and start it again, but with the same results. Had the fuel lines replaced a while back and was running ok. I recently replaced the pull cord and primer bulb myself, and that is when it all started. I'm assuming it's a fuel delivery issue cause it seems to be burning the fuel I prime and cuts off because it's not pumping more fuel...somebody tell me if I'm wrong!

I've thought about replacing the carburetor.. but before I do that does anyone have some pointers???

Recommended Lubricant for Steering Chains on Gizmow ZTR

I need to lubricate the three chains used to connect the steering wheel with the front wheels on my Gizmow Formula ZTR. Two of the chains are located where they are exposed to grass clippings, and I figure I should avoid any regular sticky lubricant. The manual just says "Lubricate the chain between the two steering wheel shafts with a spray type lubricant or light oil." I know WD40 makes a PTFE dry lubricant spray. Another spray product is DuPont's Teflon Chain-Saver Dry Self-Cleaning Lubricant. Would one of these be a good choice?

In my experience with other spray type products, the spray nozzle tends to get plugged up long before I ever use up the product, so most of it just goes to waste. Finish Line makes several dry film Teflon-based lubricants for use on bicycle chains. One of them is a squeeze-bottle product "Finish Line DRY Teflon Bicycle Chain Lube." Would that also be an option?

Any suggestions on these or some other product that will not just make things worse by attracting dirt and grime?

BTW: I still think the Gizmow is the best mower ever. I bought mine 5 years ago after some discussion on this forum of ZTR mowers for using on a slope. Other than a few broken belts, the mower has performed quite well. I did have to do my first actual repair recently when the ZTR control got erratic. I thought I was in big trouble. But it turned out that the shaft holding the cams that couple the steering wheel to the hydraulics had slipped down about 1/2 inch, so the cams did not make contact with the rollers on the hydraulic push-pull chain. Once I realized what the problem was, I just pushed the rod back up, retightened the set screws, and was back in business.

If we had a Gizmow brand section on the forum, would I be the only one on it? :)

Thanks,

Charlie

Command 25 ( cv730s ) loosing power when PTO is engaged

Love the forum. Have a cv730s in a craftsman dyt 4000. It,ll sputter a little at idle and full throttle. But when I engage the PTO the engine gets real rough and looses power. I'm assuming carb cleaning but after reading here and a few other places I thought it would be best to get an opinion. Thanks

Input from experts needed. ZTR Purchase imminent!

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster.

Looking to replace an older ariens 19/44 ztr w/ power bagger. It was a good mower, just need something new and the bagger takes up too much space in the garage. The 19 hp does bog down when the grass is a little wet, so probably need more hp?
My lawn is 1/2 acre, very thick, heavily fertilized and watered 100% KBG. I am rather anal about my lawn, so cut quality is priority #1. Will spend up to 5500. Local dealer, who I very much like, has Hustler, Ferris, GH, Ariens/Gravely, and Big Dog. I would prefer to buy from him if all things being equal.

So, the two mowers that I'm really interested in are:
1. Ferris IS600 25/44 (non icd deck) $4500
2. Big Dog Blackjack (Hustler flip up) $4800
3. Ferris IS600 24/48 (ICD deck) not in stock, price unknown

He has the two in stock. I like the space saving I'd get with the flip up (kids are overtaking my garage). I think the Ferris is more machine for the money. I can't research this anymore, I need you folks to tell me which to buy, and if not one of these then what should I get in the under 5500 range? Again, QoC is majorly important. I will build another homemade striping kit, as they work awesome.

Thanks in advance!

Engine MTD 11A runs 20 seconds and dies

MTD 122 CC engine, Mod 11A-08MA029, SN 1D088K21295 DOM 2007. Mower will run fine for 15 to 20 seconds and die. Wait 2 or 3 minutes produces same results. I have ensured tank is clean, added new filter inline, gas line is clear and put in a new carb kit. Same results. Ran fine last year. Mower has had very light use and is in good shape other than not running properly. Just wonder if this is a universal problem with this Chinese unit. Would lowering the float allow more fuel to pass into the bowl and keep it from starving out? I am about out of ideas on this one.

brand new member

I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago but being a seasonal tax preparer my schedule just got a lot easier. I now have time to post and hopefully get the info I need from you. I have an Ariens 42" hydro cut with a 22 hp briggs and straton v tech engine. The governor adjustment and spring hook up had been removed when I did assembled the carb and cleaned it. The bowl etc was filled with bad gas and debris. The only way to get it to fire was with ether (also to keep it running. The carb works fine now but I can't seem to get the governor right. The governor has a primary and secondary spring. The choke is controlled by the throttle cable ***'y. the throttle cable, when sliding from slow to fast turns the throttle clockwise putting spring tension on the governor arm and turning it clockwise I had it running a couple of times and the engine slows and stalls at slow speeds.
i assume this means that the secondary spring is hooked up incorrectly. My concern is getting the primary spring and the arm adjusted right on the governor shaft. I should be able to get the secondary spring tension found with the engine running. Can anyone help me out with the proper way to fix my problems?

Husqvarna 25R trimmer motor problem

Hi Folks,

Apologies if this is not in the right forum....I looked for Husqvarna but couldn't find it. Anyhow, I have an older 25R trimmer that's been running fine for 20 odd years. Suddenly today I started it up, and it runs at idle , but as soon as I apply throttle it dies. I re started it and left it run just at idle, and after about 30 seconds it died again. The only thing I did recently was to replace the starter cord which broke, and while doing that I blew around the carb area with an air hose to clean up dust and dried grass. Possible a bit of dirt went into the carb?? Not sure what to troubleshoot here and would appreciate any advice. I think it's a mikuni carb.....I've attached some pics.IMG_20160425_110807 (640x640).jpg

Thanks.

Yard Machines Rear Engine Rider transmission question

So I recently acquired this mower. I've got a quick question about how the transmission works. It has a F-N-R shifter below the seat, then 6 speeds up on the front. It says shift on the go, does that mean it's basically a hydrostat with set positions (6 in this case)? I drove it around the yard and the transmission works great.

Ferris IS 1500 Z Won't Start.

I have a Ferris 1500 Z with a 21 HP Kawasaki that will not start unless you jump the battery with a jump box. I checked the battery with a load tester and it first showed it was bad in the mower. I then pulled the battery and put a load test on it and the battery showed good. I went ahead and changed the battery anyway. Put that battery in and the mower still won't start. I changed the ground wire to the battery and cleaned the ground connection to the engine block. I also changed the positive battery cable to the solenoid. The mower still will not start. I then checked with a voltmeter from the battery to the solenoid and it shows 12.4 volts. I then checked to the starter and it also shows 12.4 volts. The ignition key is turned on and the seat switch is jumped while doing these checks. I then pulled the starter and cleaned the ground to the starter and it still will not start. I pulled the starter and took it to a starter repair shop and they advised the starter is in good shape. I put the starter back on and still the mower will not start. I then went and bought a new solenoid and replaced it and it still will not start. I checked all the connections again and checked the voltage at all the points as mentioned above and it still is showing 12.4 volts. The ground from the battery to the engine block is showing 0.04 ohms which I believe is good. I contacted the local Ferris shop and they advised they did not know when I explained everything to them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

New or Used and what to look for in used for a 72" ZTR

Hi folks,

I have about 3.75 acres to cut and have been doing so with a JD Z425 for eight years. Since land is flat I am SERIOUSLY thinking about moving to a 72" to save some significant time. I enjoy my place looking nice but don't necessarily like all the time spent in the mowers seat. I am looking at Toro 5000 series (new) among others. My local dealer has said that the 3000 series are not worthy.

I would appreciate ANY feedback on what to look for if buying a used ZTR. I am a car guy and am comfortable with mechanicals but know ZIP about what to look for as good/bad in a used ZTR.

Also, any thoughts on what I could get for my JD Z425 with 420 hours (very well maintained) would be great.

Thanks for helping a newbie,

Dave

Engine This is my Husq 625EX. It is new. It will not start. Advice sorely needed

Hey Yall'', about at my wits end and hoping for some experts advice.

My Husqvarna 625ex is 3 months old.
It has been started and ran ONCE.
3 weeks ago it would not start after sitting for 2 months.
I called Husqyavrna and was told it is covered under warranty, but I would need to find a person who did the work and pay their diagnostic fees. Here in Texas that is about $50-75 and a 4-5 week wait.

I have drained the gas and replaced it with Tru-Fuel. No Start.
Replaced the Spark Plug - No Start.
Removed the 'mini' screen/filter under the carb (Big hex screw plug) and cleaned it. No Start.

While I am a competent person, I do not have any experience with small motors and am looking for any direction or advice for troubleshooting.

Super grateful for any help. - Texas

Equivalent mower to Grasshopper 928D

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I currently mow 17 acres with a 1999 Grasshopper 928D that I believe has bitten the dust. I will know more this afternoon after the repair guy calls with either good or bad news.

Just in case - any opinions on what would be an equivalent mower to the 928D. I mow open pastures/around horse fencing, choppy bumpy pastures, heavy tall grasses, around trees/gates and along creek banks. There are some slopes along the creeks. I also mow paths through forested areas.

We bought the 928D used 15 years ago with 2000 hours on it and it has been a beast. I will miss it terribly if it really is not repairable.

Thanks for any input/opinions,

Laurie

Also, how much minimum offset for the cutting blade above the deck opening?

Everride Warrior, Kubota 121S, Ferris, or CC ZForce

I have about 1.5 acres I'm mowing with sloped areas and some wet areas. I have looked at and driven the following models:

2009 Everride Warrior 60" $4000 Neighbor's commercial grade home mower with 600 hrs KW 25hp
Kubota Z121S48 $5400 KH 21 720 ZT3100
Ferris IS600Z48 $5748 BS Comm 25hp ZT3400
Ferris IS700Z52 $6503 BS Comm 27hp ZT3400
2015 CC Z Force SZ60 $5130 KW 24hp ZT2800
2015 CC Z Force Comm SZ60 $5939 KH 23.5hp ZT3100
2016 CC Z Force SX54 $6100 KW 24hp ZT3100

The Everride is discontinued and my local dealer carries CC, Ferris, and Kubota. My neighbor easily navigated up and across my slopes with the Everride but I have very limited experience with lab bar drive and am nervous on the slopes. I think I will eventually get comfortable with more experience. I don't have any issues using it on flat ground.

I like the heavy duty build and price of the Everride but am concerned about getting parts for it. I like the suspension on the Ferris and like the larger tires on the 700. The Kubota was rough riding and has odd size rear tires. I may want to switch from turf tires to the Carlile AT101s and would have to buy new wheels for the Kubota. I am also looking at the steering wheel CCs. I am more familiar with the controls on these and you can steer them if you start sliding down slopes.

I am looking for opinions on which of these will work best for my lawn and which one is the best overall deal? I think I have it narrowed it down to the Everride, Ferris IS700Z52, or the 2016 CC SX54 but am open to suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
jmak

Pulley difference

I currently have a husqvarna ZTH 6125KOA model no 968999165 and do all the maintenance and upkeep myself and now I am having a problem that I just can't figure out and hope that someone out there has some insite to help,
My mower has a 61 inch deck and the belt tensioner is good and I have a new belt on it and every time I put on the clutch the belt comes off. Looking at the new pulley, it is bigger in width and not like the one I had to take off because of a bad bearing, it has a complete new clutch assembly, also the other pulleys and bearings are in good shape.
If anyone out there has any information that may help it would be greatly appreciated.

Snapper LX170H Clean Up

I recently picked this machine up for a good price. It is a LX170H, don't know the year. The previous owner bought all new steering parts for it, as someone stripped everything out (steering gear, steering shaft, and support box). The deck is still at the gentleman's house, as it has a sapling growing through it! The plan is to make it mowable again and sell it. It has a 16 hp Briggs Vanguard in it that does fire on starting fluid. It won't stay running, but I think that may be related to the fuel solenoid. Does this have to have 12v to open up? The wiring was all disconnected when I got this mower, so I may not have hooked things up correctly. I have attached a pic of it. It doesn't look like much now, but I'm getting her together one piece at a time...
