2012 vs 2014 ferris

I am looking at two mowers right now.

2012 feris 52" pro
20hp engine
about 850 hrs

2014 ferris 52" pro
19.5 hp engine
about 150 hours

What would be the better buy. Someone told me that they don't make the hydros for the 2012 anymore and are very expensive to replace. any truth to that?

Is there something to look for on the hydros; a way to test them?

I'm good with engines, but have never delt with walk behinds before. Any help would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

Snowblower question....Ariens tractor & blower

I am looking at purchasing a used Ariens S18H tractor with a single stage front mount snowblower on it.....I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the pto driven front blowers....wondering how far they will blow the snow. Also do they have any trouble with heavy snow, or should I be looking at another set up? I am getting an incredible deal, so if it's any good I don't want to pass up on it.

New professional series vtwins better then intecs?

Whats the verdict on the currant professional series vtwins? Are they much of an improvement on the older intec vtwins? They look very similar. The intecs sounded like they had alot of trouble with dropping pushrods/valve train issues.

Id be intersted to know if briggs have resolved these issues in the professional series. Anyone know?

2014 FW35 -- HELP, Grinding noise when in neutral

I own a 2014 Ferris 20HP (Kawasaki) FW35 (52") walk-behind with approx. 40 hours on it. I used it thru-out the summer (2015) and it worked perfectly. Approx. 3 days ago, I had to move it out of my garage, in order to access some packages. The mower started normally and I moved it. I left it sitting outside for a few hours. When I went to move it back in, again it started normally but when I placed it in position to park and shifted the mower into neutral. I heard a high-pitched, "whining" type noise along with a grinding noise-which I had never heard up to that point. I took it out of neutral and it stopped. I started it a few more time (from neutral) and the noise kept happening but it stopped, once I shifted it out of neutral? All fluids were fine, too!

Does anybody out there have a similar experience. I'm assuming that the noise is coming from the transmission? Up to this point, my mower never did this. In fact, it's been in storage (and hasn't been used) since the beginning of October! It was bought new, the day after Thanksgiving 2014.

Any advice, suggestions are appreciated. This is my first Ferris mower. I'm much more familiar w/Bobcat brand

Briggs 650 series running rough

Why is my lawn mower running rough ?

It's a Briggs & Stratton 650 I/C series engine, 190cc.

I've posted a YouTube video here : https://youtu.be/2ZSbo5Ihai0

In the video it's running at full throttle but isn't developing power and is running rough.
I have found that by pulling on a small spring it will run much better.
I'm not sure if this is a choke or throttle control.

The assembly that moves that the spring is attached to looks like it might be bent a bit, but it doesn't appear to be enough to cause this problem.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thank you

Mice

Don't drive the car very often but took the car out to do some shopping. Didn't go 2 miles and the check engine light came on and I just made it home a because the car ran so bad. I checked it out with the scanner and the engine knock sensor was bad. Now I know why I hate working on cars because they mounted the knock sensor under the intake manifold and it was a all day job just getting to it. Then when I do get to it I find a mouse nest and they had eaten the wires. It wouldn't of been so bad if they would of left me with some wires to work with but they ate the wires right down into the plug and to replace that wire and plug I would have to replace the complete engine harness. Another 2 hrs. just fixing the harness because its all shielded 22 gauge wire. Sure am thankful I can still do my own work because I would of hated to see that bill if I had taken the car to a repair shop. Just HATE working on modern cars

honda hrx217hya idle problem.

2013 Honda hrx2174hya mower will die when move from fast to slow idle. I recently tighten the idle screw 2-3 turn and now it will idle on slow. I was wondering if this is a good fix or do I need to take it to a local Honda dealer? I also notice when I engage the blade the engine seem like it want to die and sometime it just shutoff. It usually take 2-3 try to get the engine to start. I check the auto choke, and it work fine (close when cold, open when hot). I bought it used and haven't mow with it yet. Could it be a bent shaft?? I've already change the oil, new filter, new spark plug, and fresh gas. I also took apart the carburetor and clean it. also please see if the mower is still under warranty.

Honda IZY - Serious snow problem!

Hey there everyone,

Here is an image of the current state of my lawnmower: ^D1058F81FD60193DDFEC7265DC9E64D73D7C2885C74DAEB518^pimgpsh_thumbnail_win_distr.jpg

Recently I purchased a Honda IZY from PowerOutlet. I've been using it for a few weeks now and I've been extremely pleased with the quality cut it gives my lawn (I've been using many other treatments to treat the grass such as weed killer etc.); although recently there has been a lot of snow fall and I decided it would be a good idea to mow my lawn when it was snowy.

After I finished doing so, I discovered that the drivebelt seemed to be a bit damaged (no idea why, it looked pretty worn out -- not sure if I got ripped off) but anyways, I decided to try sand off the drivebelt in order to make it as "equally" worn out so at least I wouldn't have the trouble of inconsistency in regards to how it cuts although I did know the cut wouldn't be as furious as it was before. This didn't work, and the drivebelt seemed to be far stiffer than previous so I decided to get my two 9 year old sons and began jerking off all over the drivebelt in attempt to make it lubricated, needless to say it didn't work as planned. After doing that, I decided it could be an issue with the blades; so I decided to insert my 7 inch (in length) and 3 inch in girth penis into the blades. Quite autistically, my son decided to turn on the lawnmower - needless to say I now have a mutilated dick and I am now minutes away from bleeding out (I have a smoking hot daughter, so I'm kinda hard right now). Before I die, I just want to say to all of you that I wish you all a Merry Christmas andddd fuuuck-aaaa-youu! The Honda IZY is an awful lawnmower.

Please do not purchase this lawnmower as I'm afraid it may end in penis mutilation and in some cases, loss of penis. I hope my sons have fun jacking off over this piece of **** on Christmas day. This is the thing I was able to get for them, sad cunts  not my problem now though, off to Heaven I go!

CMM1000 won't hold charge

Hello,

About a month ago, I noticed the my CMM1000 would only go about 20 or 40 feet before running out of power. Previously, I could mow the entire front lawn without any problems. So, I bought new batteries, installed them, charged them up and...no difference. Can only go about 20 or 40 feet before it starts to lose power.

Any thoughts on what else the problem could be? I am a novice when it comes to this stuff, so any detailed explanations on how I can fix this is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Twin Briggs Engine

I have been thinking about attempting to build a twin Briggs and stratton engine out of spares I own from torn down engines. My only problem is that the parts are for vertical shaft engines and I dont particularly know if it would be possible and if it was how easy it would be to do with only a small amount of tools. Your opinions and tips would be incredibly welcome.
Thankyou

I believe I am going to have to have work done on this 27 hp Kohler engine soon. It seems to be blowing oil out through exhaust. I have to refill it some, every time i use it lately. It also is running slightly rough, except when I crank the rpm's up. Can someone give me a rough estimate of what the cost is to have the work done on the engine? Thanks

Buying Advice Looking at an IS700

Hello whereever you might be!!

I hope to pull the trigger on a new mower right after Christmas. I'm strongly leaning towards an IS700 after sufficient agonizing and worrying about what to purchase.

I have one concern. It weighs about 1/2 ton. I'm concerned it will leave ruts in my yard unless the yard is bone-dry. Hill hugging is not an issue for me but my yard is pretty wet on a regular basis. Rains around 60" per year.

I've read a good bit about mowing in different directions, etc. to avoid ruts. Am I overly concerned about this issue or should I look for something lighter? The only substantially lighter mower I have found is a hustler raptor SD but I am not strong on this unit although for the yard I have it would be just fine.

Thanks for your thoughts. .......... Rhett:confused3:

Repairs LX188 pto clutch bolt coming loose

This is the second time that this has happened, heard rattling noises while mowing and stupidly did not stop.
The mower deck quit cutting but engine still running. The 4 inch or so 7/16 bolt on the end of the crankshaft and its washer were gone, clutch dropped down. Couldn't find the bolt or washer in the grass where I had been mowing, they weren't on the deck.
Bought a genuine JD bolt and cup washer, cleaned and used Locktite. Torqued to about 50 ft/lb (estimate) but
don't see how to keep the engine shaft from turning when tightening the bolt.
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

What Grass Bagger for Simplicity Broadmoor

I just bought a Simplicity Broadmoor 16LTH (model no 1692106), either late 1990s or early 2000s. It has Hydro trans and 38" mower deck.

I want to mount a grass / leaf bagger but local Simplicity dealer says the bagger is no longer available. It was model 1694308.

Is there a bagger that will mount on my tractor? It does have the side shoulder bolts with possible high and low positions, but there are no holes in the back frame plate - only the filler port for the hydro trans.

The mower deck has the "swing-away" bracket for a turbo.

Thanks for any guidance.

19.5 Briggs Stratton Twin Hard to turn over and wont restart after running

I have read many post on subject of this motor not wanting to restart after running. Most point to problem with Magnito/coil. I replaced with new one and thought I would be in clear. Second problem, I was unable to find out if problem fixed due to problem with engine not turning over to start after turning off. This has been a long time problem with this mower. Replaced batteries couple times. Frustrated I purchased small car battery and squeezed it in. Thought it would spin like crazy. Still struggles a little but spins enough to start. Brings me back to original problem. Now that it spins over after turning off. Does not start. Starts good when cold. Will start up after it sits for a while. Please Help!

Repairs No power to Yardman

This is the same machine as the previous thread.

I have adjusted hangers and welded up bits. The tyres were way down and are pumped up. I've changed oil, plug, air cleaner. But...

I turn on the key and there is no power. I have tried jump starting with another battery but the result is the same. The ammeter records no apparent current. The headlights do not turn on. The battery has 12V charge.

Maybe this is a blown fuse but I can't find a fuse anywhere on the machine (boy this is where I could sure do with a correct workshop manual for a 400 series - not the 700 series manuals that are scattered across the interwebs).

I'm not sure where to start looking. I've traced the wiring as far as I can follow it and there does not seem to be any broken or burned wires.

So, could a guru point me in the right direction please? The engine was obviously running when I drove it into the garage last weekend.

I dont really need them(like a lot of the stuff I already have lol) But figured if I can get it for a decent deal I would... I asked my local dealer and he said all that today would run me about 1,200.00. Guy said he was thinking around 500? He wasnt sure and he said he would trust my judgment.. I was thinking 350-400? Not sure what resale is for the, since they are older.. Im not gonna use them everyday and actually the pole saw would be my most used one..

Scag tiger cub 48

I put the mower up in my metal building while I was replacing the two rear wheels. Because of problems getting the new tires to seat it took about three weeks before I was ready to run the mower again. When I started the mower it was hard to get started, but after a few minutes it started. After running about 35/40 seconds it shutdown and it turned out that the top fuse had blown. I replaced the fuse and turned on the switch. The fuse blew in about 10/15 seconds. I know this means I have a short, but don't know where to start looking because I don't know which systems are fed by that fuse. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Magnum 18 - oil weights for cold weather

So, my next question concerning my new-to-me Deutz Allis with an M18S. It's set up with a plow, I'll be using it in cold weather. My manual says to only use SAE 30 over 32 degrees F, and is says do NOT (yep, in capital letters) use 10w30. But then, under the little graph with the degrees and arrows, it says that 5w20 or 5w30 synthetic can be used up to 40 degrees. I'm fine with using synthetic, and I like the idea of up to 40. There are days when you're plowing way below freezing, but also still plowing on days when it's warmed up and above 32 degrees. But it just seems strange to me - to go from straight 30w to 5w20 - wouldn't it make sense to go from 30 to 10w30 synth? I'm new to using these Magnum engines in the winter - I've used Commands before, and with their hydraulic lifters, it was pretty easy - 10w30 synth, summer and winter. I love my Kohler manuals, but I've found some pretty glaring misprints (or just plain old mistakes) concerning things like spark plug gap, gasket application, and torque specs. So I normally listen to manuals, but I'm a little nervous about going from SAE 30 to 5w30, especially in an engine with solid lifters and 500 hours on it. What do you all think? I'd love to hear some opinions, thanks in advance!

Onan BF 16 HP

Hello,

I have a 1974 16 HP Onan in which I would like to mount an external oil filter and cooler. There are two drain plugs at the base of the engine. This engine needs to run continuously for five to six hours at 3000 RPM so I need to keep it cool.

Question, can I route the oil from one side, through an electric oil pump, into a filter and then through a small oil heat exchanger where it will return to the other side of the engine through the remaining drain plug? A 12 volt fan will blow across the heat exchanger. :confused3:

Magnum 18 - horizontal shaft - oil seal

Looking for info about Magnum oil seals, and reading the last thread about the vertical shaft 20. Mine's a horizontal shaft, doesn't sound as scary. What seems like an oil pan - bottom sump cover on a V looks more like just a cover on an H. Seems like I should be able to pull the front cover, pull out and replace the bearing, new gasket for the cover, and carefully slide it, with its new seal, over the crank. I read the manual, but they really just do a full assembly and reassembly. I don't want to tear down the whole engine, everything else is good, so I want to do as little teardown as possible. Hey, I'm for an easy life! Any advice would be great, thanks in advance.

How do you fix this??

I own a 2005 exmark lazer z 60. I bought this mower brand new and I am the only operator. The mower just turned twelve-hundred hours. So here is the problem. When I engage the collection system the mower really boggs down and the rpms drop to a point of almost stalling but work their way up to about thirty-five hundred rpm. Whenever a go up any incline the mower will loose rpm and stall if I don't turn away and get to a more level plain. This has been going on all this season. Up until this season it has run fine. I have re-built the ultra vac, checked all pulleys they spin freely. The engine has a new short block, carburetor, new heads, new clutch. The hydraulics checked out and are within factory specs. No one can seem to figure out what is causing this problem. I had it checked out at the certification school for kohler engines. They suggested to take to my exmark dealer. They won't be able to look at it until March because they have not seen the machine since I bought it. My local mechanic and the kohler people have never run into this before. Thet are stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

Husqvarna RZ4219 Starting Issues

I'm having very odd intermittent starting issues with my 1yr old RZ4219. It started a few weeks ago and doesn't make sense. I have replaced the fuel, fuel filter and added a new spark plug, but it didn't change anything. Basically, there are times I go to start it and it just turns over and over, but never starts. I know it's getting fuel. I see the fuel in the filter and also, when I take the plug out, it's also covered in fuel. For example, the other day, I made sure it started in my trailer. Started right up. I let it run for about a minute. I took it over to another house to cut grass, backed it off the trailer and it wouldn't start. I brought it back home, charged the battery and tried again. No luck. Went in the house frustrated and then a couple of hours later, went back out and it started right up.

I can only suspect it's wiring/switch related and when it doesn't start, it's because something is not providing spark to ignite the fuel. Maybe a safety switch acting up? But which one and how to tell?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a snapper rear engine mower that was purchased in 1997. The mower is in excellent shape and runs extremely well. It has a 14 HP Kohler engine and has a 33 inch cut.

I recently purchased a 21 gallon tow behind liquid sprayer. The spray unit utilizes an 8 amp motor. I have two choices for electrical power:

1- Purchase a second battery and mount it to the sprayer unit. Keep the second battery charged with a battery charger when not in use.

2- Connect the sprayer motor directly to the Snapper's battery and get power the easy way.

Will the charging system of this particular Snapper be able to handle the additional amp load without any adverse issues? I am speculating the stock charging system isn't designed to handle accessories, but hoping a Snapper expert could educate me further.

Thanks so very much!

Warm weather

Here in upper NY the weather sure has been unreal. Today its calling for temperatures in the low 70's. We had no plowable snow so far. I just know it wouldn't last but sure hoping. I may even have a nice December motorcycle ride today seeing they haven't needed to salt the roads yet.

HR214 no low speed and oil leak

I picked up an old HR214 that had been sitting for a couple of years for $10 so i could teach my Son how to work on small engines and flip mowers.

The motor was locked solid with very little oil in the case and i feared the worst but for once the engine Gods were smiling on us.
It took about 15 mins to drain the gas, remove the plug and get the motor free with a socket and breaker bar. Filled with fuel, some 10W-30 and five pulls and she was running. albeit like the Bizmark in a cloud of blue glory.
Once the smoke cleared i found the low gear was not working but the high gear dragged be round that yard in style.
i plan to put the trans/engine cover tomorrow to see whats happening but thought i'd ask if there is a simple/common trouble spot to look at first.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I also noticed its leaking oil from a seal at the bottom of the motor. Is that a simple/worthwhile gasket fix on a $10 mower?

thx all

Mower Won't Start

I have a Sears Craftsman Self-Propelled 22" mower. It has a Briggs&Stratton 700 Series, 190cc engine. I've owned the mower for 4 years and it has always started with just a pull or two on the starter handle. I tried to start it for one final cut a couple of weeks ago and could not get it to start. Pulled the plug and checked the gap, it was ok. Checked the filter, it was a little dirty but not bad. Took the filter off and sprayed starter fluid right into the intake. It would try to start, sputter and then quit. Did this several times, no success. Also I've never let gas sit in the mower over the winter. I've always run the gas out before storing. I also use fresh gas each season.
Looking for help and ideas as to what I can do next to get the mower to start.
Thanks for any help!

New startup advice

I am in the process of launching a social enterprise lawn care business in Knoxville, TN (plans of intentionally hiring an underserved workforce, particularly ex-offenders). While I have operating experience in the lawn industry, I am looking for sound management counsel in bidding/equipment/HR/multiple crew logistics and best practices. One last way of making money this mowing season

Well now that the mowing season is over, I am enjoying the relaxation. Snow is not in the forecast yet, but it was in the 60's the past 2 days. Weird!! Colder weather is coming the end of this week. But before then, I am going to be getting a bit more money. The municipal leaf trucks have made their rounds, and aren't coming by again. But some houses put out a bit more leaves. So I'm going around the area hauling away their leaves, and taking it to the local farm/dumpsite. There is a small dump-fee, so I am going to pile the trailer high to get the most out of each load. I will be doing this Tuesday, because it is going to rain tomorrow. Photos to come. Even though I have a small trailer, I can pile it high!

Layed up my Scag Tiger Cub for the season

Hi Troops,
After cleaning up about 2,400 bushels of mostly leaves and pine needles, I did all the lubes, changed filters and oils, drained the fuel, ran the engine out of gas and removed the battery.
As the season was winding down, I noticed that the left drive system was becoming increasingly jumpy in reverse only. Machine has about 800 hours on it. I cut open the hydraulic filter and found no foreign matter in it. I also disconnected one of the hoses at the wheelmotor, no foreign matter there. So I'm thinking about a new left pump for next season. I know that replacing the respective wheelmotor is recommended, just not crazy about having to spend over a grand to replace these parts! The pump drive belt is due replacement every 400 hours and I plan to replace it in spring along with possibly the left pump and wheelmotor.
I inspected the clutch, still within tolerance on the air gaps and Ohms readings.
My other two machines need scheduled and other maintenance done on them and I'll address them as time and weather permit.
Take care all and have a Great Holiday Season!!!!

Snapper Auger Gearbox~model 8261

Greetings, This Snapper gearbox works well so the gears should be OK. The auger shaft seals are shot, also there is lateral movement of the housing, that is I can move it, the housing, back and forth in line with the auger shaft.

Is this normal, I see there are Thrust Washers, should there be this movement?

What's your thought?

Thanks Richard

John Deere 175 Hydro - how to move without starting?

I have an old John Deere 175 Hydro that came with my house. I haven't been able to get it started yet, but plan to work on it over the winter.

My question is - how can I move it without starting it?? The mower is in neutral, but it won't roll. When I jacked it up to test the wheels, they spin in opposite directions when I move them manually.

I have a little lever or pin on the back of my newer John Deere that allows it to freewheel, but this JD 175 doesn't have one (at least not in the same place).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Turns over but will not start

Club Cadet, Briggs and Stratton 22 HP twin OHV.

Will crank fine, but not firing up. Mowed great all season, last time it was used it took about 5-8 seconds to fire up (a little longer then usual). Now it will turn over for 15-20 seconds, multiple times over several days, but will not start.

I have dismantled the top cover and checked for any loose wiring.
Have removed one of the spark plugs to check for firing and its working fine.
Also have removed fuel line at the carburetor intake and there is flowing gas.

Any suggestions?

Gasoline exsapes around primer plunger??

Hi All:

I just rebuilt a carb on a LB 5239 mower that has a D 400 engine and a Type A carb. The problem is that the fuel is blowing past the primer plunger into the air and not being forced into the throat of the carb. I cleaned the carb and blew out all of the passages with high pressure air when the carb was rebuilt. The tune up kit looked good as all of the components were well made.

What is causing this problem and how may I correct the problem?

Tia,

Franchi

Coit Tower is a typical San Francisco landmark positioned on Telegraph Hill to the north aspect of the Monetary District. Coit Tower could possibly be seen from many locations of town, and is reachable by way of a steep street and from the standard strolling path. Coit Tower stands 180 ft tall, and plenty of guests prefer to contact the highest of the tower for eye-catching appears of San Francisco and the close by areas. Coit Tower as nicely encompasses a collection of murals painted within the Works Progress Administration, portraying native occupations and neighborhoods.

Coit Tower was constructed with funds offered by Elizabeth Wythe
Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who donated a 3rd of her fortune upon her demise throughout 1929 to smarten town of San Francisco. Lillie Coit was a world voyager, and introduced again many relics from her experiences, however in reality regarded San Francisco as her true house and desired to remain a everlasting legacy to town. The funds have been used to construct two memorials: Coit Tower, and a sculpture in Washington Sq. that depicts three firemen.

It's typically believed that Coit Tower was constructed as a memorial to the firemen of San Francisco, as Lillie Coit was a lifelong fanatic of the hearth division. Nevertheless, despite the tower's similarity to a hearth nozzle, many historians agree that Coit Tower was simply constructed to enhance the fantastic thing about town. Coit Tower is as properly surrounded by steep sceneries grounds that are as properly fairly nice to be walked by means of.

Guests to Coit Tower may take a pulley to the highest, appreciating the thoughts blowing murals alongside the way in which. The murals have been reinstated and as properly significantly handled in order that they might all the time stay integral, and are thought-about a really very important a part of the historical past of San Francisco. Amongst different issues, the murals painting farmers within the fields, a financial institution theft, and a view into the port, a busy metropolis avenue, and quite a lot of number of different scenes as effectively. San Francisco Shuttle Excursions are accessible of Coit Tower during which the murals are defined intimately. The stroll is extraordinarily bodily demanding, and house for automobiles can also be restricted. Attending to Coit Tower is nicely values the try, nevertheless, as guests are content material with a peaceable setting and the placing views of a wonderful metropolis.

Too Late for Fertilization?

I skipped an application of fertilizer in the summer and put down Scott's Winterizer in mid October. It's obvious that the fertilizer is all depleted and the green grass starts fading. My question is: is it too late now if I put down some more of the fertilizer since the leaves are not growing. Would it at least help the roots?
I live in central NJ and the weather is unseasonably warm right now.

403e carb, Missing something ?

Got one of these in today with a gut full of water, all well & good.
However I can not seem to find a model & type number anywhere, just a serial No on a sticker about to fall off the cowl.
So that is the first question, where did Briggs hide it or was it on a decal that has already fallen off ?

second question.
There is a white spigot / nipple on the right side of the carb that slots into the groove in the mounting bracket.
This is hollow , has barbs moulded in and was very clean comparred to the rest of the carb so I am assuming that there was a tube on there at one time but I can not find one listed in the parts book.
This is assuming it is in fact a 09P702 engine.

This is the primer version, not the choked one.
Any of you Briggs experts feel inclined to educate me ?

Mower deck 1995 Yardman 400 series Deck issues and manuals

Hi, Newbie here

I just bought a fairly tired 1995 Yardman 400 series lawn tractor mower. It is going to need some work but hopefully not too much.

Can anyone please direct me towards an owners/operating and/or workshop manual? I have the parts manual and I have found the right engine manual from Briggs and Stratton but MTD don't go back that far.

Also, there are issues with the deck. It is hanging too low so that the pulley brake disks do not contact the brake blocks when the lift lever is set to lock the blades (see the photo attached). How do I raise deck to the correct height?

I need to replace the link link assemblies because they are all almost cut through. I have already replaced the brake blocks.

briggs vanguard 23hp locked up??

Well we have an 48hl olathe sweeper which has a new briggs on it as of last year... Unfortunately the guy running it ran it out of oil(tho he swears he checked it) So now a year and 2 grand later we are stuck with a paper weight once again... I put about 1.5 quarts into the motor when it happened so it was for sure low! Had it sit for about 30min and while I was gone getting the backhoe to drag it back to the shop, the employee that was using it tried to start it again(after I told him not to mess with it) He said it ran for a couple sec and then just shut off! Today I got a few min to look at it.. Motor turns free for about a turn then locks up(plugs are out of it) The starter wont even get past it.. So im thinking the connecting rod snapped and it just it wedging itself against the block...I couldnt look down the rear spark plug hole as I was trying to spin it so not sure if that piston is moving, the front one is for sure moving. Any ideas what might be wrong? I wanna tear into it at some point but not sure what im gonna get into(tips/tricks).. Im pretty sure the motor is Fubar... I havent called about the warranty but im pretty sure they wont cover it since it was an operator error unless they can find a manufacture defect in it somewhere... My new plan is to use one of the 18hp vanguards that we have on an older motor that is no longer in use(old school 3 wheeled yazoo) Im hoping it will still be enough power to run the hyrdos and sweeper part of it... I ideally want to get it running again and get rid of it! Would rather use a vac to attach to our dump truck.. The old boss who is no longer there was up for spending the money on a new motor last year vs a vac system...

Kohler compression problem, post head gasket and valve adjustment

Hello everyone, new to the forum

Kohler 20hp sv600 courage, ran good. During winter maintenance, replaced head gasket, exhaust port gasket, intake carburetor gasket, valve cover gasket and set valves, replaces push rods to appropriate valves. Cranked mower drove front wheels onto wheel stands and was dropping pto to install new drive belt. However when loosening pto bolt the crank rotated. Also, able to rotate flywheel by hand easily.
References to explanation using time on a clock is the flywheel set at 12:00 o'clock and the piston at TDC.
Cycle 1, TDC, adjusted valves(intake .005, exhaust .007), (down stroke), input valve starts to open just before bottom of stroke, exhaust valve closed.
Cycle 2(upstroke), intake valve finishes opening and closes TDC, exhaust valve remained closed.
Cycle 3(compression down stroke, supposedly), input valve closed. Exhaust valve begins to open, opens fully with slight tension remains on intake valve untill flywheel at 3 o'clock.
Cycle 4(upstroke), intake valve opens slightly and closes quickly, from 7-10 o'clock, exhaust valve closes at 10 o'clock
As I understand,
Cycle 1, TDC, down stroke, input valve opens.
Cycle 2, upstroke input valve closes and compresses air/gas.
Cycle 3, TDC, spark plug ignites down stroke.
Cycle 4, upstroke exhaust valve opens and closes at the top of the stroke.
Seems like valves acting like timing 180 degrees off? Installed new flywheel key. The only thing I can think of, is maybe the flywheel was rotated 180 degrees and push rods were installed on the back side of the valve cam/back of lobe on cam? Is this possible? New bolts and head gasket, can I take off the bolts and gasket and reuse without buying another set? Any suggestions and thank you.

TB 280 ES Surges and dies.

my mower is a 21" self propelled, electric start TB280 ES. B&S 725EX 190cc. Came here looking to solve the problem of engine surge - up and down and finally dies.

Actually after reading for about an hour here - I repaired it today and it runs as good if not better than ever.

This is what was wrong - Mowing leaves (mulching) and half way thru the mower started surging from normal to almost dying over and over. It's got leaves and stuff all over it and even up in the throttle/choke linkage. No problem, I cleaned it out real well and tried to start it. It would start and the only way I could keep it running was to move the automatic choke rod back and forth.

I decided that somehow the choke mechanism thing by the muffler was bad. I came here to see how to change or repair it.

I kept reading and the "carburetor needs cleaning" kept getting mentioned. So, thinking that the mower is snookered right now - that tearing into the carb wouldn't make it any worse - I did. Very simple to take off, clean out with choke spray, blow out with air, put it back together, no left over parts, and it runs great.

If a person will do a little reading - the info is here.

Thanks go out to all who contributed the info in the forum.

Y'all done good.

ps. nothing wrong with the choke at all.

CMM1200 Type 1 mower won't start

My CMM1200 Type 1 mower won't start. I read a few of the issues posted on this site that were similar but I'm not certain if this is strictly a dead battery issue, a charger issue, or possibly both.

I kept the mower connected to the charger when not in use (I'm in California so we do use it year round).
The green LED on the charger was always lit so I expected that the battery was charged.
I just measured 5 volts across the top cell and about 2.5 volts across the bottom cell with an inexpensive analog volt meter.
If the green LED on the charger is lit, does this mean that the charger is no longer functioning properly due to the low voltage across the battery cells? , ...., and should it be replaced along with what I assume to be a dead battery. I'm pretty sure that the battery is over 5 years old, as this mower is a hand me down from a friend when the switch lever on my old B&D MM850 broke.

I'd hate to purchase and install a new battery if my existing charger were part of the problem as well. Any thoughts on how I might take this a bit further to see if I need to replace the charger as well or other things I should consider here?

Thanks, Tony

Ventrac versus traditional tractor and bush hog

We have pasture land that needs bush hogging each year but I would really rather have a machine with front end mower instead of rear end attachment. Has anyone compared using a Ventrac 4000 model with tough cut mower versus a traditional tractor pulling a 5 or 6 foot bush hog. We have some slopes to be mowed, and the fields are really just tall grass and weeds, not really any heavy brush. Curious as to which cuts better and is one any quicker than the other.

Thanks

JD z425 w/ B&S engine white smoke issue

Just took our JD in to the shop 4 months ago to have a throttle valve replaced to the tune of $600 when all said and done. Recently, this mower started blowing white smoke from both the engine and muffler after running for awhile. It starts out a little at first, then gradually smokes more....no noticeable engine loss or problems other than the smoke. When I first noticed it, I could see oil slowly dripping on the muffler, causing the smoking there. There is dirt/oil buildup between the muffler and engine block, but when I cleaned it off and ran again, looking for leaks, I didn't see any, not even on the muffler like before. I plan on changing oil, fuel/fuel filter, and spark plugs first, but does anyone else have experience or suggestions that a moderate diy'er can do? Trying to keep it out of the shop again if possible....Thank you in advance

Briggs Intek 900 Model 122032-0536

This B&S 900 problem with backfiring and jerking starter rope out of hand.

With only limited "smarts" for this engine, thought timing off so looked at flywheel key and it was sheared in two. Checked valve clearance and appeared to be ok. New shear pin, reassembled but same problem.. hard to start and when it fired, backfired only. Looked and key was sheared again.

Thinking this is a camshaft issue, but don't know how to check if that is the problem without tearing the engine apart.

Any help or guidance for this beginner?

I have a Cub Cadet 2146 that has a problem with the PTO. When engaged, it kills the engine. I unplugged the wires to the PTO and ran power directly from the battery and the mower deck engaged and ran just fine.

I suspect there is some kind of safety switch somewhere that prevents the the mower deck to turn on and kills the engine in the process. Before I install a switch to bypass the PTO switch, I thought I would ask if anyone might know the cause of my problem.

The owners manual only mention of killing the engine safety switch is in the drivers seat. This is not the cause of this problem.

If anyone has suggestions please let me know. I have nearly an acre of land and the wife is complaining that the yard needs mowing.

Thanks,
David

A couple recent finds

The mower is a 1968, not sure of the modle # yet. I am out of town and will pick it up when I return home.
The edger is a 1960 ET-1....first year for Lawnboy edgers.
It is getting to the point where I have a lot of projects to work on...but I am happy with the modles that I have been finding.

Need New Carb... but which?

I need to order a new carb for my 8hp B&S engine, but am not sure which carb to order.

The carb is marked Walbro 5-4993. There are various other markings as shown in the pictures provided below.

This came off a B&S Engine #192432-0122-01. The code on the ID plate is 9409131A.

Can anyone tell me which carb I need to purchase? Thank you.

10Hp Snow Blower troubles

I have a 10HP HM100 15xxxxxxxxxx snow blower, that has been giving me trouble for a while now. (if you want all the extra numbers I will need to remove the electric start button)

What I did to prepare for the winter.
Before I put gas in it I took the main jet out, cleaned all the holes with a fine wire. Even the super tiny one on the main jet. I'm talking about the one that you can barley see.

I have an adjustable main jet so I took that apart and cleaned it as well. I pulled the bowl off and clean it out, there was barely any varnish everything was really clean.

I made sure my pin and seat were working good, It felt like it was stuck shut and made a click when the float pulled it down. I assume that is good. It appeared to be working correctly.

With reassembly I made sure that the lower part of the bowl would allow the float to drop down low. and made sure the adjustable jet was 3 ~3.5 turns out

I cleaned the spark plug with a wire brush and some soft sanding, it was very black and sooty.

I put some fresh gas in it, primed it till I saw gas come out the air intake. And started it up.

Additional Info
plastic tank, with new gas lines, new gas filter.

Problems
1. The throttle gets pulled in a bit despite me setting it to max. When I use the machine I need to hold the throttle out all the way to throw snow further, the machine wont stall while under load in half throttle.
2. The machine will just shut off after its been running great for a minute or two. (I can use the auger and 3,2,1 + reverse without it stalling with no choke)
3. The tank mysteriously empties, I thought I left gas in the tank when I put it away last winter. But I found it bone dry. I can't see any leak.

I read around on the internet that the gas cap might be broken, so I removed the gas cap and ran it, it still shut off.

If I give it 3/4 choke it seems to stay running. Could this have anything to do with the weather/carb tune? Its 8C outside today(I have been turning in the main jet slowly and checking the spark plug to see if I have a good mix).

After it turns off I can immediately start it again with one pull, no prime, full choke, once it starts I can quickly remove the choke and it will run.

Any help would greatly be appreciated, I don't wanna be shoveling this winter.

Buying Advice Old Grasshopper vs New MidMount Ferris

Good afternoon,

This is my first post as I am new to the forum. I have been lurking for a few months trying to research what to purchase since I am now in the market for a new mower. I'll try to make it clear and as brief as possible.

1. I really would like a front mount mower but new Grasshoppers are out of my price range. I'd like to stick the deck up under shrubs, and under the edge of my house which is elevated off the ground.
2. I've looked at Ferris MidMounts and I like one model in particular (Ferris 700Z). This would be a new unit and I can afford it.
3. I found a 2008 Grasshopper 727 K2 for sale with about 1400 hours (Kohler 27 HP). It includes a dozer blade and a massive looking vacuum system for sucking up clippings, etc.. The deck is 52" which is what I want. Price is currently 5K for the lot. Supposedly everything runs fine. I have not seen the unit in person yet.

Q1: If the 5K price reasonable despite the engine hours if everything works OK on the grasshopper?
Q2: I'm I crazy to even consider an old Grasshopper when I can purchase a fairly nice new mid-mount with a 4 year warranty? I've milked 15 years out of a Scotts mower without a ton of major trouble and I don't mind working on my equipment.

I could sell the grass catcher since I don't have need for bagging. I cut 1.5 acres on a regular basis and occasionally add another half acre that is heavily shaded (little grass or weeds).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. ......... Rhett

Cruise Control on KM90 not working

Bought a new KM90 in early spring. Since new, it has a big dead band on the throttle and the "cruise control" doesn't work. The switch itself works, but when I hold the throttle at WOT and engage the cruise control, nothing happens. Would tightening the throttle cable help this?

I know it is still under warranty, but I don't feel like waiting a while for them to simply tightening the cable.

Good morning or afternoon where you might be,

New to the forums although I've lurked for about 2 months. Found the site while looking for reviews on specific mowers. The site has tons of useful information and it is easy to see trends (good or bad) with specific brands if you look at the various threads over a long period of time.

Thanks for all the help in advance. I'll probably start firing off a few questions over the weekend. With all the possible choices in a new mower, you end up with your head spinning after a while. Back to work until the weekend starts.

MTD mower DECK extension spring need help

I have Montgomery Wards rider, Signature 2000 Elite. Mower model # TM030000A. Made by MTD. MTD cross over # 131A670G088. The deck is Deck G model 600 & 700 series for front engine lawn tractors, side discharge.
The mower was given to me about 15 years ago. Has a Briggs twin engine. The mower has served me well for years but needed the engine rebuilt. I rebuilt the engine over the summer and now am working on the deck.
My problem is with the extension spring that hooks on a spring retainer bracket attached to left rear axle of tractor. Extension spring is 7.58" long. Spring is part # 732-0556 and rear of spring attaches to bracket # 17128. These are shown on parts list along with diagram schematic. This spring is a PTA to remove and I made a tool for pulling back on the spring to remove from axel bracket. Problem is, I have removed the deck several times over the years BUT still not sure I have the front of the spring attached to the stabilizer bracket in the correct place. Any help will be sincerely appreciated.
This is a well built mower, all steel except the grill. Only other problem I have had is having to pull back extremely hard on the deck lift lever in order to get it to start. Safety switch has been replaced. FISH was helpful in suggesting bending the triangle tab on the lift lever might help in this. Will try that once I re-install the deck.
Hope you MTD mechanics have suggestions.
Thanks and great days ahead to all of you

Need info on Briggs flywheel magnets

Hi all. The engine in question is a 3.5 HP lawnmower type, don't have the model number handy but can get it if need be however when it comes to the flywheels from what I've seen they are all pretty much the same with these type of engines. There are three magnets on one side, two on the other side. Center on the three shows strong magnetism, the two on the other side of the flywheel are practically nil magnetized. I am aware of North South polarities. My question is does the two magnet pair (opposite side on flywheel of the three magnets) need to be magnetized also? Have spend quite some time looking on the net for a simple picture of such a flywheel showing their magnets and polarities so i can get my head around this but have been unable to come up with anything - a picture says a thousand words.
Any help on this would be appreciated, thanks.

Hard starting LB 8231 ????

Hi all:

I have a LB 8231 mower that is difficult to start when the mower is cold. It hot starts on the first pull as it should.

Here is what I have done to the engine:

The spark is very hot.

The fuel primer emits a copious amount of fuel when the primer bulb has been pressed.

I have not checked the cold compression with a gauge but it appears to be sufficient.

There are no air leaks in the carb area or engine area.

I assume that the engine seals are good as it starts very well when hot and runs well.

Should I install the air cleaner? I am attempting to run the engine sans the air cleaner. Perhaps the air cleaner is needed to make sure that the priming gasoline charge does not escape from the carb. I have never had to start a LB engine with the filter fitted to the carb.

Any suggestions for getting a quick cold start?

Tia,

Franchi

20 HP sae j1940 trouble shooting guidance

About a month ago my engine would not idle down when i moved my cable to that position. All linkage and springs etc seemed to be tight and working freely. The engine ran fine other than that. The other day it ran fine (like that described above) then all of a sudden it would barely run and was belching out black smoke while sounding like it was about to conk out but it would still keep running. Its about 7 years old. Ideas and Where do I start to troubleshoot? Thanks

FH641 V hard to start hot or cold

Greetings!

I have a 6 or 7 year old Cub Cadet 0 turn mower that's got increasingly hard to start. Kawasaki FH641V.
Most of the time it nearly runs the battery down before it starts, starting fluid no help. I can tell when it is getting ready to start, it back fires once through the carb and then a couple more seconds of cranking it finally starts. Same condition when it's already warmed up. Spark plugs show no sign of flooding.
Any help appreciated.

Tecumseh HM-100 RPM's ???

I'm new to this and first time posting here so hello to all.

I have an 18 year old Tecumseh HM-100 10HP engine that powers my 5000 watt self regulating portable generator. According to the manual the no load RPMs should be set to 3600 RPMs, I am assuming this is to give the correct 120 volt 60 Hz output. However when the generator is loaded to about half it's rated watts the engine RPM's drop along with the voltage and Hz. If I adjust the governor increasing the RPMs to give me approxitmatly 120 volts @ 60Hz when loaded I get around 3700 RPM when the load is removed.

So my question is this, will running the engine at 3700 PRM's with no load do any harm to the engine? Any information would be appreciated.

Bill

Hustler belt problems

Dear Sir. I have similar problems with the belt on my Hustler 42 inch cut Mini Z. The belt wants to dislocate off the lower side of the idler pulley. I have removed the deck from the mower and as another reader has stated the idler pulley is atleast 2cm higher than the other pulleys. This is especially noticable on the left hand side where the pulleys are very close and the angle that the belt has to travel is very acute. Is ther an idler pulley slide available or my next thought is to use spacers and attempt to increase the height of the cutter puleys. Thanks David.

Has switching to a synthetic 2 cycle oil cleaned the combinstion chamber of your LB?

Hello:

I am thinking of switching to a synthetic oil to clean the carbon deposits from the piston, cylinder and rings of my two 1970's Lawn Boy mowers. Has anybody had success with this happening? If so, what oil did you find cleaned your engine?

Tia,

Franchi

RPM Question

Last year I bought a G5500 class (24 HP Briggs), 54 Craftsman garden tractor and I have a question about the RPM. According to the manual, the gas throttle supposed to be almost max whether the mower is engaged or not. I can understand the full gas when using the mower, but using the tractor for towing a small garden trailer would seem a waist of gas and unnecessary engine wear. I checked the RPM where the gas throttle supposed to be and it was 3100 RPM. Do I really need to crank it up that high when not using the mowing function?
For the past 20 years (and still use it), I have been using an old Yazoo, 18HP Wisconsin TJD with a 60 deck. I usually keep the gas throttle at 1800 RPM. I realize that this Wisconsin engine is not a Briggs, most likely has a longer stroke and even though it is 30 years old, it probably will outlast the Briggs.
I appreciate your input on the RPM issue.

Echo PB-755SH leaf blower dies when throttle opened

Hello,

I have an Echo PB-755SH leaf blower. I received it second hand as a gift, but it has only been used a handful of times.

I can start the blower fine, and it idles without any trouble, but when I open the throttle beyond about 20%, it starts sputtering and dies unless I lower the throttle back down.

Since I have owned it (3 months), I have used it probably 5 times. The first time I used it it worked perfectly. Second time I experience this issue. Last 3 or 4 times it has been inconsistent, but now the problem is always present.

I'm new to small engine maintenance, but have done some research. Here are the facts:
I am using treated fuel with the correct oil/gas mixture.
I replaced the fuel filter just in case that was the problem.
I replaced the spark plug in case that was the problem.
I have checked the air filter and spark arrestor screen - all clear.

Any ideas before I have to take it in to the shop?

Thanks!
